Measuring the efficiency of Serbian insurance companies
The transition period, and the still ongoing economic crisis, amplify the volatility in the domestic insurance market and forces the management of insurance companies to continuously monitor changes in the market, i.e. to identify risks and opportunities, and therefore to undertake certain activities. The focus of the business of insurance companies is based on satisfying the needs of existing and potential clients. Respecting the current situation in the insurance market in anticipation of future events, the management of insurance companies must create and implement the optimal strategy in line with the company’s capabilities. For this purpose it is necessary to measure the efficiency of the business, which is the subject of this paper where the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) method is applied to the case of insurance companies operating in Serbia
Search for the lepton-family-number nonconserving decay \mu -> e + \gamma
The MEGA experiment, which searched for the muon- and electron-number
violating decay \mu -> e + \gamma, is described. The spectrometer system, the
calibrations, the data taking procedures, the data analysis, and the
sensitivity of the experiment are discussed. The most stringent upper limit on
the branching ratio of \mu -> e + \gamma) < 1.2 x 10^{-11} was obtained
Developments in the efficiency of the Malaysian banking sector: the impacts of financial disruptions and exchange rate regimes
In the mid-1990s, East Asian countries have experienced severe financial crisis that were followed by deep economic downturns. A variety of methodologies have been used to explain the Asian financial crisis. However, the impact of the Asian financial crisis of 1997 on the efficiency of the banking sector has not been studied yet. The present article attempts to provide new empirical evidence on the efficiency of the Malaysian banking sector around the Asian financial crisis. The efficiency estimates of individual banks are evaluated by using the non-parametric data envelopment analysis (DEA) method. The results indicate that the foreign banks have exhibited higher technical efficiency compared to their domestic bank counterparts. However, the results suggest that the foreign banks were severely affected by the Asian financial crisis, implying that the foreign banks are not insulated from unexpected events like the Asian financial crisis of 1997
A Portable Wireless Particulate Sensor System for Continuous Real-Time Environmental Monitoring
Airborne particulate matter has been shown to be associated with morbidity and mortality, and may interfere with certain sensitive experiment. Understanding the levels and movements of particulate matter in an enclosed space can lead to a reduction in the impact of this material on health and experimental results. A system of environmental sensors including particulate matter, selected gasses, humidity, temperature, and pressure can be used to assist in tracking air movement, providing real-time mapping of potential contaminants as they move through a space. In this paper we present a system that is capable of sensing these environmental factors, collecting data from multiple dispersed nodes and presenting the aggregated information in real-time. The highly modular system is based on a flexible and scalable framework developed for use in aircraft cabin environments. Use of this framework enables the deployment of a custom suite of sensors with minimal development effort. Individual nodes communicate using a self-organizing mesh network and can be powered from a variety of sources, bringing a high level of flexibility in the arrangement and distribution of the sensor array. Sensor data is transmitted to a coordinator node, which then passes the time-correlated information to a server-hosted database through a choice of wired or wireless networks. Presentation software is used to either monitor the real-time data stream, or to extract records of interest from the database. A reference implementation has been created for the National Institutes of Health consisting of a custom optical particle counter and off-the-shelf sensors for CO2, CO, temperature, humidity, pressure, and acoustic noise. The total environmental sensing system provides continuous, real-time data in a readable format that can be used to analyze ambient air for events of interest
Age-dependent associations between 25-hydroxy Vitamin D levels and COPD symptoms: Analysis of SPIROMICS
Introduction: Age and vitamin D levels may affect symptom burden in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). We used the Subpopulations and Intermediate Outcome Measures in COPD Study (SPIROMICS) to determine independent associations between vitamin D levels and COPD symptoms in different age strata. Methods: Serum 25-hydroxy (OH)-vitamin D levels were modeled continuously and categorically (65 years old), multivariable modeling was performed to identify relationships between 25-OH-vitamin D levels and the COPD Assessment Test (CAT), the modified Medical Research Council score (mMRC), the St George's Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ) total and subdomain scores, the Veterans' Specific Activity Questionnaire, and the 6-minute walk test distance. Results: In the middle-aged group, each 5ng/ml higher 25-OH-vitamin D level was independently associated with more favorable CAT score (-0.35[-0.67 to -0.03], P=0.03), total SGRQ (-0.91[-1.65 to -0.17]; P=0.02), and the SGRQ subdomains (Symptoms:-1.07[-1.96 to -0.18], P=0.02; Impact: -0.77[-1.53 to -0.003], P=0.049; Activity: -1.07[-1.96 to -0.18], P=0.02). These associations persisted after the addition of comorbidity score, reported vitamin D supplementation, outdoor time, or season of blood draw to models. No associations were observed between 25-OH-vitamin D levels and symptom scores in the older age group. Discussion: When controlled for clinically relevant covariates, higher 25-OH-vitamin D levels are associated with more favorable respiratory-specific symptoms and quality-of-life assessments in middle-age but not older COPD individuals. Study of the role of vitamin D supplementation in the symptom burden of younger COPD patients is needed
Formation of dense partonic matter in relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions at RHIC: Experimental evaluation by the PHENIX collaboration
Extensive experimental data from high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions were
recorded using the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider
(RHIC). The comprehensive set of measurements from the first three years of
RHIC operation includes charged particle multiplicities, transverse energy,
yield ratios and spectra of identified hadrons in a wide range of transverse
momenta (p_T), elliptic flow, two-particle correlations, non-statistical
fluctuations, and suppression of particle production at high p_T. The results
are examined with an emphasis on implications for the formation of a new state
of dense matter. We find that the state of matter created at RHIC cannot be

Geochemistry and mineralogy of the phonolite lava lake, Erebus volcano, Antarctica: 1972–2004 and comparison with older lavas

hosts a vigorously convecting and persistently degassing lake of anorthoclase phonolite magma.
The composition of the lake was investigated by analyzing glass and mineral compositions in
lava bombs erupted between 1972 and 2004. Matrix glass, titanomagnetite, olivine,
clinopyroxene, and fluor-apatite compositions are invariant and show that the magmatic
temperature (~1000°C) and oxygen fugacity (ΔlogFMQ = -0.9) have been stable. Large
temperature variations at the lake surface (ca. 400 - 500°C) are not reflected in mineral
compositions. Anorthoclase phenocrysts up to 10 cm in length feature a restricted compositional
range (An10.3-22.9Ab62.8-68.1Or11.4-27.2) with complex textural and compositional zoning.
Anorthoclase textures and compositions indicate crystallization occurs at low degrees of
effective undercooling. We propose shallow water exsolution causes crystallization to occur and
shallow convection repeats this process multiple times, yielding extremely large anorthoclase
crystals. Minor variations in eruptive activity from 1972 to 2004 are decoupled from magma
compositions. The variations probably relate to changes in conduit geometry within the volcano
and/or variable input of CO2-rich volatiles into the upper-level magma chamber from deeper in
the system.
Eleven bulk samples of phonolite lava from the summit plateau that range in age from 0 ±
4 ka to 17 ± 8 ka were analyzed for major and trace elements. Small compositional variations
are controlled by anorthoclase content. The lavas are indistinguishable from modern bulk lava
bomb compositions and demonstrate that Erebus volcano has been erupting lava and tephra from
the summit region with the same bulk composition for ~17 ka.The work at Erebus volcano and the continued operation of the Mount Erebus Volcano
