Being More Realistic About Reasons: On Rationality and Reasons Perspectivism
This paper looks at whether it is possible to unify the
requirements of rationality with the demands of normative
reasons. It might seem impossible to do because one depends
upon the agentâs perspective and the other upon features of
the situation. Enter Reasons Perspectivism. Reasons
perspectivists think they can show that rationality does consist
in responding correctly to reasons by placing epistemic
constraints on these reasons. They think that if normative
reasons are subject to the right epistemic constraints, rational
requirements will correspond to the demands generated by
normative reasons. While this proposal is prima facie plausible,
it cannot ultimately unify reasons and rationality. There is no
epistemic constraint that can do what reasons perspectivists
would need it to do. Some constraints are too strict. The rest
are too slack. This points to a general problem with the
reasons-first program. Once we recognize that the agentâs
epistemic position helps determine what she should do, we
have to reject the idea that the features of the agentâs situation
can help determine what we should do. Either rationality
crowds out reasons and their demands or the reasons will make
unreasonable demands
Local Evolutionary Debunking Arguments
Evolutionary debunking arguments in ethics aim to use facts about the evolutionary causes of ethical beliefs to undermine their justification. Global Evolutionary Debunking Arguments (GDAs) are arguments made in metaethics that aim to undermine the justification of all ethical beliefs. Local Evolutionary Debunking Arguments (LDAs) are arguments made in firstâorder normative ethics that aim to undermine the justification of only some of our ethical beliefs. Guy Kahane, Regina Rini, Folke Tersman, and Katia Vavova argue for skepticism about the possibility of LDAs. They argue that LDAs cannot be successful because they overâextend in a way that makes them selfâundermining and yield a form of moral skepticism. Spin induced multipole moments for the gravitational wave flux from binary inspirals to third Post-Newtonian order
Using effective field theory techniques we calculate the source multipole
moments needed to obtain the spin contributions to the power radiated in
gravitational waves from inspiralling compact binaries to third Post-Newtonian
order (3PN). The multipoles depend linearly and quadratically on the spins and
include both spin(1)spin(2) and spin(1)spin(1) components. The results in this
paper provide the last missing ingredient required to determine the phase
evolution to 3PN including all spin effects which we will report in a separate

The immune system of many mammalian species is not fully developed at birth, with newborns obtaining temporary immunological protection from maternal antibodies. Little is known of the immune system of the harbour seal, and developmental aspects of its immune system have not been systematically studied. We collected blood and milk samples from nine free-ranging mother-pup pairs throughout the lactation period on Sable Island, Canada, in an effort to characterise developmental aspects of the immune system of this newborn pinniped. A shell-correction method is applied to nuclei far from the beta stability
line and its suitability to describe effects of the particle continuum is

TEM-EELS study of low-friction superlattice TiAlN/VN coating: the wear mechanisms
A 20-50 nm thick tribofilm was generated on the worn surface of a multilayer coating TiAlN/VN after dry sliding test against an alumina counterpart. The tribofilm was characterized by applying analytical transmission electron microscopy techniques with emphasis on detailed electron energy loss spectrometry and energy loss near edge structure analysis. Pronounced oxygen in the tribofilm indicated a predominant tribo-oxidation wear. Structural changes in the inner-shell ionization edges of N, Ti and V suggested decomposition of nitride fragments
A Search for Selectrons and Squarks at HERA
Data from electron-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 300 GeV
are used for a search for selectrons and squarks within the framework of the
minimal supersymmetric model. The decays of selectrons and squarks into the
lightest supersymmetric particle lead to final states with an electron and
hadrons accompanied by large missing energy and transverse momentum. No signal
is found and new bounds on the existence of these particles are derived. At 95%
confidence level the excluded region extends to 65 GeV for selectron and squark
masses, and to 40 GeV for the mass of the lightest supersymmetric particle.Comment: 13 pages, latex, 6 Figure
Search for a W' boson decaying to a bottom quark and a top quark in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
Results are presented from a search for a W' boson using a dataset
corresponding to 5.0 inverse femtobarns of integrated luminosity collected
during 2011 by the CMS experiment at the LHC in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV.
The W' boson is modeled as a heavy W boson, but different scenarios for the
couplings to fermions are considered, involving both left-handed and
right-handed chiral projections of the fermions, as well as an arbitrary
mixture of the two. The search is performed in the decay channel W' to t b,
leading to a final state signature with a single lepton (e, mu), missing
transverse energy, and jets, at least one of which is tagged as a b-jet. A W'
boson that couples to fermions with the same coupling constant as the W, but to
the right-handed rather than left-handed chiral projections, is excluded for
masses below 1.85 TeV at the 95% confidence level. For the first time using LHC
data, constraints on the W' gauge coupling for a set of left- and right-handed
coupling combinations have been placed. These results represent a significant
