Serological Monitoring for Leptospira Spp. and Monitoring of Productive and Reproductive Indices on Dairy Farm
Leptospirosis is a zoonosis caused by spirochetes of the genus Leptospira. It has a worldwide distribution with greater occurrence in tropical and subtropical countries. It is endemic in Brazil. It affects domestic, wild and production animals. The goal of this study was to assess dairy herd productive and reproductive indexes on a monthly basis by serologically monitoring the infection dynamics on two experimental groups: one with animals with negative results at study onset (G-1) and another with animals tested positive for at least one leptospira serovar (G-2). The serum microscopic agglutination test (MAT) was employed. Animals with titer equal to or greater than 100 IU were considered reactive. Animals were evaluated for productive and reproductive indexes based on data provided by the dairy’s IT system. Blood was collected from all animals in both groups once a month for nine months. Analysis showed interference between animals seroreactive to leptospirosis and both milk production and number of pregnancies for G-2 at collection moments 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 9 whereas for G-1 the same indexes showed decrease only in the 5th and 9th study months. The most prevalent serovars were Hardjoprajitino 59.5%, Pyrogenes 21.04%, Pomona 11.07%, Wollfi 11.07%, Hardjo 8.78%, Guaricura 6.55%, Copenhageni 5.09%, Icterohaemorrhagiae 1.11%, and Ctg 0.83%. Serovar Hardjoprajitino showed a relationship with herd milk production decrease
Herbicides applied in pre-emergence to control Ipomoea spp. in sugarcane in dry season
The weed control through the application of long residual activity of herbicides is important strategy for the removal of these at different times of the year. The objective of this study was to evaluate the residual activity of herbicides applied pre-emergence of sugarcane on the morning glory of control in the dry season, and the selectivity of the herbicides sugarcane crop. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design with four replications. The treatments were (g a.i. ha-1): hexazinone + diuron + sulfometuron (1,025.1 + 289 + 24.65); Amicarbazone (1,050); amicarbazone and sequential application of isoxaflutole (700 and 60); sulfentrazone (800); imazapic (133); tebuthiuron and sequential application of isoxaflutole (750 and 60), and a control without herbicide application. The hexazinone + diuron + hexazinone and amicarbazone caused Ipomoea hederifolia control levels of 96% and 92.5%, respectively. As for the Ipomoea quamoclit, all herbicides studied provided excellent levels of control. For Ipomoea nil, the herbicides hexazinone + diuron + sulfometuron, amicarbazone, amicarbazone and isoxaflutole and sulfentrazone control showed very good to excellent, while tebuthiuron and isoxaflutole herbicides only good level of control (88.8%) and imazapic with unsatisfactory level of control (45%). Therefore, it can be concluded that hexazinone + diuron + sulfometuron (1,025 + 289 + 24.65 g a.i. ha-1), amicarbazone (1050 g a.i. ha-1), sulfentrazone (800 g a.i. ha-1), and the sequential applications amicarbazone (700 g a.i. ha-1) and isoxaflutole (60 g a.i. ha-1), they can be considered as excellent alternatives for the control of different morning glory species (I. hederifolia, I. quamoclit and I. nil), while the imazapic (133 g a.i. ha-1) and the sequential application of tebuthiuron (750 g a.i. ha-1) and isoxaflutole (60g a.i. ha-1) can be considered as alternatives to control only Ipomoea quamoclit when applied in pre emergence of sugarcane crop in the dry season
Hepatic and neurobiological effects of foetal and breastfeeding and adulthood exposure to methylmercury in Wistar rats
Methylmercury (MeHg) is an organic bioaccumulated mercury derivative that strongly affects the environment and represents a public health problem primarily to riparian communities in South America. Our objective was to investigate the hepatic and neurological effects of MeHg exposure during the phases foetal and breast-feeding and adult in Wistar rats. Wistar rats (n = 10) were divided into 3 groups. Control group received mineral oil; The simple exposure (SE) group was exposed only in adulthood (0.5 mg/kg/day); and double exposure (DE) was pre-exposed to MeHg 0.5 mg/kg/day during pregnancy and breastfeeding (±40 days) and re-exposed to MeHg for 45 days from day 100. After, we evaluated possible abnormalities. Behavioral and biochemical parameters in liver and occipital cortex (CO), markers of liver injury, redox and AKT/GSK3β/mTOR signaling pathway. Our results showed that both groups treated with MeHg presented significant alterations, such as decreased locomotion and exploration and impaired visuospatial perception. The rats exposed to MeHg showed severe liver damage and increased hepatic glycogen concentration. The MeHg groups showed significant impairment in redox balance and oxidative damage to liver macromolecules and CO. MeHg upregulated the AKT/GSK3β/mTOR pathway and the phosphorylated form of the Tau protein. In addition, we found a reduction in NeuN and GFAP immunocontent. These results represent the first approach to the hepatotoxic and neural effects of foetal and adult MeHg exposure
Estimating the global conservation status of more than 15,000 Amazonian tree species
Estimates of extinction risk for Amazonian plant and animal species are rare and not often incorporated into land-use policy and conservation planning. We overlay spatial distribution models with historical and projected deforestation to show that at least 36% and up to 57% of all Amazonian tree species are likely to qualify as globally threatened under International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List criteria. If confirmed, these results would increase the number of threatened plant species on Earth by 22%. We show that the trends observed in Amazonia apply to trees throughout the tropics, and we predict thatmost of the world’s >40,000 tropical tree species now qualify as globally threatened. A gap analysis suggests that existing Amazonian protected areas and indigenous territories will protect viable populations of most threatened species if these areas suffer no further degradation, highlighting the key roles that protected areas, indigenous peoples, and improved governance can play in preventing large-scale extinctions in the tropics in this century
May Measurement Month 2018: a pragmatic global screening campaign to raise awareness of blood pressure by the International Society of Hypertension
Aims
Raised blood pressure (BP) is the biggest contributor to mortality and disease burden worldwide and fewer than half of those with hypertension are aware of it. May Measurement Month (MMM) is a global campaign set up in 2017, to raise awareness of high BP and as a pragmatic solution to a lack of formal screening worldwide. The 2018 campaign was expanded, aiming to include more participants and countries.
Methods and results
Eighty-nine countries participated in MMM 2018. Volunteers (≥18 years) were recruited through opportunistic sampling at a variety of screening sites. Each participant had three BP measurements and completed a questionnaire on demographic, lifestyle, and environmental factors. Hypertension was defined as a systolic BP ≥140 mmHg or diastolic BP ≥90 mmHg, or taking antihypertensive medication. In total, 74.9% of screenees provided three BP readings. Multiple imputation using chained equations was used to impute missing readings. 1 504 963 individuals (mean age 45.3 years; 52.4% female) were screened. After multiple imputation, 502 079 (33.4%) individuals had hypertension, of whom 59.5% were aware of their diagnosis and 55.3% were taking antihypertensive medication. Of those on medication, 60.0% were controlled and of all hypertensives, 33.2% were controlled. We detected 224 285 individuals with untreated hypertension and 111 214 individuals with inadequately treated (systolic BP ≥ 140 mmHg or diastolic BP ≥ 90 mmHg) hypertension.
Conclusion
May Measurement Month expanded significantly compared with 2017, including more participants in more countries. The campaign identified over 335 000 adults with untreated or inadequately treated hypertension. In the absence of systematic screening programmes, MMM was effective at raising awareness at least among these individuals at risk
Protein-energy malnutrition as a consequence of the hospitalization of gastroenterologic patients
The effects of the clinical and dietetics in patient managements on the protein-energy status of hospitalized patients were retrospectively (four yr) investigated in 243 adult (49 +/- 16 yr), male (168) and female (75) patients suffering from chronic liver diseases (42%), intestinal diseases with diarrhea (14%), digestive cancers (11%), chronic pancreatitis (10%), stomach and duodenum diseases (7%), acute pancreatitis (7%), primary protein-energy malnutrition (3%), esophagus diseases (3%), intestinal diseases with constipation 14 (2%) and chronic alcoholism (2%). The protein-energy nutritional status assessed by combinations of anthropometric and blood parameters showed 75% of protein energy malnutrition at the hospital entry mostly (4/5) in severe and moderate grades. The overall average of hospitalization was 20 +/- 15 days being the shortest (13 +/- 5,7 days) for esophagus diseases and the longest (28 +/- 21 days) for the intestinal diseases with diarrhea patients which also received mostly (42%) of the enteral and/or parenteral feedings followed by acute pacreatitis (41%) and digestive cancers (31%) patients. When compared to the entry the protein-energy malnutrition rate at the discharge decreased only 5% despite the increasing of 30% found on the protein-energy intake. The main improvement of the protein-energy nutritional status were attained to those patients showing protein-energy malnutrition milder degrees at the entry which belonged mostly to primary protein-energy malnutrition, acute pancreatitis and intestinal diseases with diarrhea diseases. The later two groups showed protein-energy nutritional status improvement only after the second week of hospitalization. The digestive cancers patients had their protein-energy nutritional status worsened throughout the hospitalization whereas it happened only in the first week for the intestinal diseases with diarrhea and chronic liver diseases patients, improving thereafter up to the discharge. The protein-energy nutritional status improvement found in few patients could be attributed to some complementary factors such as theirs mild degree of protein-energy malnutrition at entry and/or non-invasive propedeutics and/or enteral-parenteral feddings and/or longer hospitalization staying. The institutional causes for the unexpected lack of nutritional responses by the patients were probably the high demand for the few available beds which favour the hospitalization of the most severed patients and the university-teaching pressure for the high rotation of the available beds. Both often resulting in early discharging. In persisting the current physical area and attendance demand one could suggest an aggressive support early at the entry preceding and/or accompanying the more invasive propedeutical procedures

Despite the gathering of dogs on public streets, homes and by the Centers for Zoonoses Control is a practice adopted that does not control the dog population, it is an activity considered as primary and supplementary of the zoonoses control. The canine surplus population, besides the important role in the chain of transmission of various diseases, is also due to problems of aggressions, traffic accidents and environmental impacts. Considering the lack of information on the dynamics destination of dogs in kennels after the State Law number 12.916/08 (provides for the control of dog reproduction and gives related provisions), the present study aimed to analyze the destination of dogs gathered by the Municipality Botucatu and transported to the Municipal Kennel and also donated by the population comparison before and after the implementation of the Law. Were analyzed 4038 input records of the dogs of the kennel, which were stored in the database generated by EXCEL spreadsheet and analyzed through Census. Before the Law, were euthanized 2193 (70%) and after 639 dogs (69%), percentage terms values are similar, however, there is a difference of 1557 dogs euthanized. This difference can be explained by the veterinary medical care offered to dogs gathered after the Law, for subsequent adoption. Since before the only measure taken was euthanasia. The results concluded that the law imposes considerable changes in behaviors and procedures performed in the kennel, especially the decrease in the number of euthanized dogs and the adoption of more selective criteria for the gathering of dogs on public roads.
