Multiplicity dependence of jet-like two-particle correlations in p-Pb collisions at = 5.02 TeV
Two-particle angular correlations between unidentified charged trigger and
associated particles are measured by the ALICE detector in p-Pb collisions at a
nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV. The transverse-momentum
range 0.7 5.0 GeV/ is examined,
to include correlations induced by jets originating from low
momen\-tum-transfer scatterings (minijets). The correlations expressed as
associated yield per trigger particle are obtained in the pseudorapidity range
. The near-side long-range pseudorapidity correlations observed in
high-multiplicity p-Pb collisions are subtracted from both near-side
short-range and away-side correlations in order to remove the non-jet-like
components. The yields in the jet-like peaks are found to be invariant with
event multiplicity with the exception of events with low multiplicity. This
invariance is consistent with the particles being produced via the incoherent
fragmentation of multiple parton--parton scatterings, while the yield related
to the previously observed ridge structures is not jet-related. The number of
uncorrelated sources of particle production is found to increase linearly with
multiplicity, suggesting no saturation of the number of multi-parton
interactions even in the highest multiplicity p-Pb collisions. Further, the
number scales in the intermediate multiplicity region with the number of binary
nucleon-nucleon collisions estimated with a Glauber Monte-Carlo simulation.Comment: 23 pages, 6 captioned figures, 1 table, authors from page 17,

Multi-particle azimuthal correlations in p-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider
Measurements of multi-particle azimuthal correlations (cumulants) for charged
particles in p-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions are presented. They help address the
question of whether there is evidence for global, flow-like, azimuthal
correlations in the p-Pb system. Comparisons are made to measurements from the
larger Pb-Pb system, where such evidence is established. In particular, the
second harmonic two-particle cumulants are found to decrease with multiplicity,
characteristic of a dominance of few-particle correlations in p-Pb collisions.
However, when a gap is placed to suppress such correlations,
the two-particle cumulants begin to rise at high-multiplicity, indicating the
presence of global azimuthal correlations. The Pb-Pb values are higher than the
p-Pb values at similar multiplicities. In both systems, the second harmonic
four-particle cumulants exhibit a transition from positive to negative values
when the multiplicity increases. The negative values allow for a measurement of
to be made, which is found to be higher in Pb-Pb collisions at
similar multiplicities. The second harmonic six-particle cumulants are also
found to be higher in Pb-Pb collisions. In Pb-Pb collisions, we generally find
which is indicative of a Bessel-Gaussian
function for the distribution. For very high-multiplicity Pb-Pb
collisions, we observe that the four- and six-particle cumulants become
consistent with 0. Finally, third harmonic two-particle cumulants in p-Pb and
Pb-Pb are measured. These are found to be similar for overlapping
multiplicities, when a gap is placed.Comment: 25 pages, 11 captioned figures, 3 tables, authors from page 20,

The upgrade of the ALICE TPC with GEMs and continuous readout
The upgrade of the ALICE TPC will allow the experiment to cope with the high interaction rates foreseen for the forthcoming Run 3 and Run 4 at the CERN LHC. In this article, we describe the design of new readout chambers and front-end electronics, which are driven by the goals of the experiment. Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) detectors arranged in stacks containing four GEMs each, and continuous readout electronics based on the SAMPA chip, an ALICE development, are replacing the previous elements. The construction of these new elements, together with their associated quality control procedures, is explained in detail. Finally, the readout chamber and front-end electronics cards replacement, together with the commissioning of the detector prior to installation in the experimental cavern, are presented. After a nine-year period of R&D, construction, and assembly, the upgrade of the TPC was completed in 2020.publishedVersio

Exploring the Strong Interaction of Three-Body Systems at the LHC
Deuterons are atomic nuclei composed of a neutron and a proton held together by the strong interaction. Unbound ensembles composed of a deuteron and a third nucleon have been investigated in the past using scattering experiments, and they constitute a fundamental reference in nuclear physics to constrain nuclear interactions and the properties of nuclei. In this work, ᵃe+−ᵅ1 and ᵅd−ᵅ1 femtoscopic correlations measured by the ALICE Collaboration in proton-proton (ᵅdᵅd) collisions at √ᵆ0=13 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are presented. It is demonstrated that correlations in momentum space between deuterons and kaons or protons allow us to study three-hadron systems at distances comparable with the proton radius. The analysis of the ᵃe+−ᵅ1 correlation shows that the relative distances at which deuterons and protons or kaons are produced are around 2 fm. The analysis of the ᵅd−ᵅ1 correlation shows that only a full three-body calculation that accounts for the internal structure of the deuteron can explain the data. In particular, the sensitivity of the observable to the short-range part of the interaction is demonstrated. These results indicate that correlations involving light nuclei in ᵅdᵅd collisions at the LHC will also provide access to any three-body system in the strange and charm sectors
Z-boson production in p-Pb collisions at sNN=8.16 TeV and Pb-Pb collisions at sNN=5.02 TeV
Measurement of Z-boson production in p-Pb collisions at 8.16 TeV and Pb-Pb collisions at = 5.02 TeV is reported. It is performed in the dimuon decay channel, through the detection of muons with pseudorapidity -4 20 GeV/c in the laboratory frame. The invariant yield and nuclear modification factor are measured for opposite-sign dimuons with invariant mass 60 <m(mu)<120 GeV/c(2) and rapidity 2.5 deviation is seen in the integrated yield between the data and calculations based on the free-nucleon PDFs, while good agreement is found once nuclear modifications are considered.Peer reviewe
Measurement of the low-energy antitriton inelastic cross section
In this Letter, the first measurement of the inelastic cross section for antitriton–nucleus interactions is reported, covering the momentum range of 0.8 ≤ p < 2.4 GeV/c. The measurement is carried out using data recorded with the ALICE detector in pp and Pb–Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon of 13 TeV and 5.02 TeV, respectively. The detector material serves as an absorber for antitriton nuclei. The raw yield of (anti)triton nuclei measured with the ALICE apparatus is compared to the results from detailed ALICE simulations based on the GEANT4 toolkit for the propagation of (anti)particles through matter, allowing one to quantify the inelastic interaction probability in the detector material. This analysis complements the measurement of the inelastic cross section of antinuclei up to A=3 carried out by the ALICE Collaboration, and demonstrates the feasibility of the study of the isospin dependence of inelastic interaction cross section with the analysis techniques presented in this Letter
Measurement of electrons from beauty-hadron decays in pp and Pb-Pb collisions at sNN=5.02 TeV
The production of electrons from beauty-hadron decays was measured at midrapidity in proton-proton (pp)
and central Pb-Pb collisions at center-of-mass energy per nucleon-nucleon pair √s NN = 5.02 TeV, using the
ALICE detector at the LHC. The cross section measured in pp collisions in the transverse momentum interval
2 < pT < 8 GeV/c was compared with models based on perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculations.
The yield in the 10% most central Pb-Pb collisions, measured in the interval 2 < pT < 26 GeV/c, was used
to compute the nuclear modification factor RAA, extrapolating the pp reference cross section to pT larger than
8 GeV/c. The measured R AA shows significant suppression of the yield of electrons from beauty-hadron decays
at high pT and does not show a significant dependence above 8 GeV/c within uncertainties. The results are de-
scribed by several theoretical models based on different implementations of the interaction of heavy quarks with
a quark-gluon plasma, which predict a smaller energy loss for beauty quarks compared to light and charm quark
First measurement of Λc+ production down to pT=0 in pp and p-Pb collisions at sNN=5.02 TeV
The production of prompt Lambda+c baryons has been measured at midrapidity in the transverse momentum interval 0 < pT < 1 GeV/c for the first time, in pp and p–Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon-nucleon
collision √s NN = 5.02 TeV. The measurement was performed in the decay channel Lambda+c → pK0S by applying new decay reconstruction techniques using a Kalman-Filter vertexing algorithm and adopting a machine-learning
approach for the candidate selection. The pT -integrated Lambda+c production cross sections in both collision systems were determined and used along with the measured yields in Pb–Pb collisions to compute the pT -integrated
nuclear modification factors R pPb and R AA of Lambda+c baryons, which are compared to model calculations that
consider nuclear modification of the parton distribution functions. The Lambda+c /D0 baryon-to-meson yield ratio is
reported for pp and p–Pb collisions. Comparisons with models that include modified hadronization processes are
presented, and the implications of the results on the understanding of charm hadronization in hadronic collisions
are discussed. A significant (3.7σ ) modification of the mean transverse momentum of Lambda+c baryons is seen in p–Pb collisions with respect to pp collisions, while the pT -integrated Lambda+c /D0 yield ratio was found to be consistent between the two collision systems within the uncertainties
