Kink stability, propagation, and length scale competition in the periodically modulated sine-Gordon equation
We have examined the dynamical behavior of the kink solutions of the
one-dimensional sine-Gordon equation in the presence of a spatially periodic
parametric perturbation. Our study clarifies and extends the currently
available knowledge on this and related nonlinear problems in four directions.
First, we present the results of a numerical simulation program which are not
compatible with the existence of a radiative threshold, predicted by earlier
calculations. Second, we carry out a perturbative calculation which helps
interpret those previous predictions, enabling us to understand in depth our
numerical results. Third, we apply the collective coordinate formalism to this
system and demonstrate numerically that it accurately reproduces the observed
kink dynamics. Fourth, we report on a novel occurrence of length scale
competition in this system and show how it can be understood by means of linear
stability analysis. Finally, we conclude by summarizing the general physical

Origin of the Canonical Ensemble: Thermalization with Decoherence
We solve the time-dependent Schrodinger equation for the combination of a
spin system interacting with a spin bath environment. In particular, we focus
on the time development of the reduced density matrix of the spin system. Under
normal circumstances we show that the environment drives the reduced density
matrix to a fully decoherent state, and furthermore the diagonal elements of
the reduced density matrix approach those expected for the system in the
canonical ensemble. We show one exception to the normal case is if the spin
system cannot exchange energy with the spin bath. Our demonstration does not
rely on time-averaging of observables nor does it assume that the coupling
between system and bath is weak. Our findings show that the canonical ensemble
is a state that may result from pure quantum dynamics, suggesting that quantum

Probing local relaxation of cold atoms in optical superlattices
In the study of relaxation processes in coherent non-equilibrium dynamics of
quenched quantum systems, ultracold atoms in optical superlattices with
periodicity two provide a very fruitful test ground. In this work, we consider
the dynamics of a particular, experimentally accessible initial state prepared
in a superlattice structure evolving under a Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian in the
entire range of interaction strengths, further investigating the issues raised
in Ref. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 063001 (2008)]. We investigate the relaxation
dynamics analytically in the non interacting and hard core bosonic limits,
deriving explicit expressions for the dynamics of certain correlation
functions, and numerically for finite interaction strengths using the
time-dependent density-matrix renormalization (t-DMRG) approach. We can
identify signatures of local relaxation that can be accessed experimentally
with present technology. While the global system preserves the information
about the initial condition, locally the system relaxes to the state having
maximum entropy respecting the constraints of the initial condition. For finite
interaction strengths and finite times, the relaxation dynamics contains
signatures of the relaxation dynamics of both the non-interacting and hard core

Subgame maxmin strategies in zero-sum stochastic games with tolerance levels
We study subgame φ-maxmin strategies in two-player zero-sum stochastic games with finite action spaces and a countable state space. Here φ denotes the tolerance function, a function which assigns a non-negative tolerated error level to every subgame. Subgame φ-maxmin strategies are strategies of the maximizing player that guarantee the lower value in every subgame within the subgame-dependent tolerance level as given by φ. First, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for a strategy to be a subgame φ-maxmin strategy. As a special case we obtain a characterization for subgame maxmin strategies, i.e. strategies that exactly guarantee the lower value at every subgame. Secondly, we present sufficient conditions for the existence of a subgame φ-maxmin strategy. Finally, we show the possibly surprising result that the existence of subgame φ-maxmin strategies for every positive tolerance function φ is equivalent to the existence of a subgame maxmin strategy
Spectroscopic analysis of the B/Be visual binary HR 1847
We studied both components of a slightly overlooked visual binary HR 1847
spectroscopically to determine its basic physical and orbital parameters. Basic
stellar parameters were determined by comparing synthetic spectra to the
observed echelle spectra, which cover both the optical and near-IR regions. New
observations of this system used the Ond\v{r}ejov and Rozhen 2-m telescopes and
their coud\'e spectrographs. Radial velocities from individual spectra were
measured and then analysed with the code {\FOTEL} to determine orbital
parameters. The spectroscopic orbit of HR 1847A is presented for the first
time. It is a single-lined spectroscopic binary with a B-type primary, a period
of 719.79 days, and a highly eccentric orbit with e=0.7. We confirmed that HR
1847B is a Be star. Its H\alpha emission significantly decreased from 2003 to

Computer aided synthesis: a game theoretic approach
In this invited contribution, we propose a comprehensive introduction to game
theory applied in computer aided synthesis. In this context, we give some
classical results on two-player zero-sum games and then on multi-player non
zero-sum games. The simple case of one-player games is strongly related to
automata theory on infinite words. All along the article, we focus on general
approaches to solve the studied problems, and we provide several illustrative

The substellar mass function in sigma Orionis. II. Optical, near-infrared and IRAC/Spitzer photometry of young cluster brown dwarfs and planetary-mass objects
We investigate the mass function in the substellar domain down to a few
Jupiter masses in the young sigma Orionis open cluster (3+/-2 Ma, d =
360^+70_-60 pc). We have performed a deep IJ-band search, covering an area of
790 arcmin^2 close to the cluster centre. This survey was complemented with an
infrared follow-up in the HKs- and Spitzer 3.6-8.0 mum-bands. Using
colour-magnitude diagrams, we have selected 49 candidate cluster members in the
magnitude interval 16.1 mag < I < 23.0 mag. Accounting for flux excesses at 8.0
mum and previously known spectral features of youth, 30 objects are bona fide
cluster members. Four are first identified from our optical-near infrared data.
Eleven have most probable masses below the deuterium burning limit and are
classified as planetary-mass object candidates. The slope of the substellar
mass spectrum (Delta N / Delta M = a M^-alpha) in the mass interval 0.11 Msol M
< 0.006 Msol is alpha = +0.6+/-0.2. Any opacity mass-limit, if these objects
form via fragmentation, may lie below 0.006 Msol. The frequency of sigma
Orionis brown dwarfs with circumsubstellar discs is 47+/-15 %. The continuity
in the mass function and in the frequency of discs suggests that very low-mass
stars and substellar objects, even below the deuterium-burning mass limit, may

Linear Fidelity in Quantification of Anti-Viral CD8+ T Cells
Enumeration of anti-viral CD8+ T cells to make comparisons between mice, viruses and vaccines is a frequently used approach, but controversy persists as to the most appropriate methods. Use of peptide-MHC tetramers (or variants) and intracellular staining for cytokines, in particular IFNγ, after a short ex vivo stimulation are now common, as are a variety of cytotoxicity assays, but few direct comparisons have been made. It has been argued that use of tetramers leads to the counting of non-functional T cells and that measurement of single cytokines will fail to identify cells with alternative functions. Further, the linear range of these methods has not been tested and this is required to give confidence that relative quantifications can be compared across samples. Here we show for two acute virus infections and CD8+ T cells activated in vitro that DimerX (a tetramer variant) and intracellular staining for IFNγ, alone or in combination with CD107 to detect degranulation, gave comparable results at the peak of the response. Importantly, these methods were highly linear over nearly two orders of magnitude. In contrast, in vitro and in vivo assays for cytotoxicity were not linear, suffering from high background killing, plateaus in maximal killing and substantial underestimation of differences in magnitude of responses
FGF receptor genes and breast cancer susceptibility: results from the Breast Cancer Association Consortium
Background:Breast cancer is one of the most common malignancies in women. Genome-wide association studies have identified FGFR2 as a breast cancer susceptibility gene. Common variation in other fibroblast growth factor (FGF) receptors might also modify risk. We tested this hypothesis by studying genotyped single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and imputed SNPs in FGFR1, FGFR3, FGFR4 and FGFRL1 in the Breast Cancer Association Consortium.
Methods:Data were combined from 49 studies, including 53 835 cases and 50 156 controls, of which 89 050 (46 450 cases and 42 600 controls) were of European ancestry, 12 893 (6269 cases and 6624 controls) of Asian and 2048 (1116 cases and 932 controls) of African ancestry. Associations with risk of breast cancer, overall and by disease sub-type, were assessed using unconditional logistic regression.
Results:Little evidence of association with breast cancer risk was observed for SNPs in the FGF receptor genes. The strongest evidence in European women was for rs743682 in FGFR3; the estimated per-allele odds ratio was 1.05 (95 confidence interval=1.02-1.09, P=0.0020), which is substantially lower than that observed for SNPs in FGFR2.
Conclusion:Our results suggest that common variants in the other FGF receptors are not associated with risk of breast cancer to the degree observed for FGFR2. © 2014 Cancer Research UK
