Loyalty discounts
This paper considers the use of loyalty inducing discounts in vertical supply chains. An upstream manufacturer and a competitive fringe sell differentiated products to a retailer who has private information about the level of stochastic demand. We provide a comparison of market outcomes when the manufacturer uses two-part tariffs (2PT), all-unit quantity discounts (AU), and market share discounts (MS). We show that retailer's risk attitude affects manufacturer's preferences over these three pricing schemes. When the retailer is risk-neutral, it bears all the risk and all three schemes lead to the same outcome. When the retailer is risk-averse, 2PT performs the worst from manufacturer s perspective but it leads to the highest total surplus. For a wide range of parameter values (but not for all) the manufacturer prefers MS to AU. By limiting the retailer's product substitution possibilities MS makes the demand for manufacturer s product more inelastic. This reduces the amount (share of total profits) the manufacturer needs to leave to the retailer for the latter to participate in the scheme. This study is funded from the Valencian Economic Research Institute (IVIE) and the European Commission
Radiation-Hard Quartz Cerenkov Calorimeters
New generation hadron colliders are going to reach unprecedented energies and radiation levels. Quartz has been identified as a radiation-hard material that can be used for Cerenkov calorimeters of the future experiments. We report from the radiation hardness tests performed on quartz fibers, as well as the characteristics of the quartz fiber and plate Cerenkov calorimeters that have been built, designed, and proposed for the CMS experiment
Measurements of the Rate Capability of Various Resistive Plate Chambers
Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) exhibit a significant loss of efficiency for
the detection of particles, when subjected to high particle fluxes. This rate
limitation is related to the usually high resistivity of the resistive plates
used in their construction. This paper reports on measurements of the
performance of three different glass RPC designs featuring a different total
resistance of the resistive plates. The measurements were performed with 120
GeV protons at varying beam intensitie
Quartz Cherenkov Counters for Fast Timing: QUARTIC
We have developed particle detectors based on fused silica (quartz) Cherenkov
radiators read out with micro-channel plate photomultipliers (MCP-PMTs) or
silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) for high precision timing (Sigma(t) about
10-15 ps). One application is to measure the times of small angle protons from
exclusive reactions, e.g. p + p - p + H + p, at the Large Hadron Collider, LHC.
They may also be used to measure directional particle fluxes close to external
or stored beams. The detectors have small areas (square cm), but need to be
active very close (a few mm) to the intense LHC beam, and so must be radiation
hard and nearly edgeless. We present results of tests of detectors with quartz
bars inclined at the Cherenkov angle, and with bars in the form of an "L" (with
a 90 degree corner). We also describe a possible design for a fast timing
hodoscope with elements of a few square mm.Comment: 24 pages, 14 figure
Forward Neutron Production at the Fermilab Main Injector
We have measured cross sections for forward neutron production from a variety
of targets using proton beams from the Fermilab Main Injector. Measurements
were performed for proton beam momenta of 58 GeV/c, 84 GeV/c, and 120 GeV/c.
The cross section dependence on the atomic weight (A) of the targets was found
to vary as where is for a beam momentum of
58 GeV/c and 0.540.05 for 120 GeV/c. The cross sections show reasonable
agreement with FLUKA and DPMJET Monte Carlos. Comparisons have also been made
with the LAQGSM Monte Carlo.Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review D. This version
incorporates small changes suggested by referee and small corrections in the
neutron production cross sections predicted by FLUK
Measurement of Charged Pion Production Yields off the NuMI Target
The fixed-target MIPP experiment, Fermilab E907, was designed to measure the
production of hadrons from the collisions of hadrons of momenta ranging from 5
to 120 GeV/c on a variety of nuclei. These data will generally improve the
simulation of particle detectors and predictions of particle beam fluxes at
accelerators. The spectrometer momentum resolution is between 3 and 4%, and
particle identification is performed for particles ranging between 0.3 and 80
GeV/c using , time-of-flight and Cherenkov radiation measurements. MIPP
collected events of 120 GeV Main Injector protons striking a
target used in the NuMI facility at Fermilab. The data have been analyzed and
we present here charged pion yields per proton-on-target determined in bins of
longitudinal and transverse momentum between 0.5 and 80 GeV/c, with combined
statistical and systematic relative uncertainties between 5 and 10%.Comment: 15 pages, 13 figure
Confirmation of the Double Charm Baryon Xi_cc+ via its Decay to p D+ K-
We observes a signal for the double charm baryon Xi_cc+ in the charged decay
mode Xi_cc+ -> p D+ K- to complement the previously reported decay Xi_cc+ ->
Lambda_c K- pi+ in data from SELEX, the charm hadro-production experiment
(E781) at Fermilab. In this new decay mode we observe an excess of 5.62 events
over an expected background estimated by event mixing to be 1.38+/-0.13 events.
The Poisson probability that a background fluctuation can produce the apparent
signal is less than 6.4E-4. The observed mass of this state is
(3518+/-3)MeV/c^2, consistent with the published result. Averaging the two
results gives a mass of (3518.7+/-1.7)MeV/c^2. The observation of this new weak
decay mode confirms the previous SELEX suggestion that this state is a double
charm baryon. The relative branching ratio Gamma(Xi_cc+ -> pD+K-)/Gamma(Xi_cc+
-> Lambda_c K- pi+) = 0.36+/-0.21.Comment: 11 pages, 6 included eps figures. v2 includes improved statistical
method to determine significance of observation. Submitted to PL
Non-B DB: a database of predicted non-B DNA-forming motifs in mammalian genomes
Although the capability of DNA to form a variety of non-canonical (non-B) structures has long been recognized, the overall significance of these alternate conformations in biology has only recently become accepted en masse. In order to provide access to genome-wide locations of these classes of predicted structures, we have developed non-B DB, a database integrating annotations and analysis of non-B DNA-forming sequence motifs. The database provides the most complete list of alternative DNA structure predictions available, including Z-DNA motifs, quadruplex-forming motifs, inverted repeats, mirror repeats and direct repeats and their associated subsets of cruciforms, triplex and slipped structures, respectively. The database also contains motifs predicted to form static DNA bends, short tandem repeats and homo(purineâąpyrimidine) tracts that have been associated with disease. The database has been built using the latest releases of the human, chimp, dog, macaque and mouse genomes, so that the results can be compared directly with other data sources. In order to make the data interpretable in a genomic context, features such as genes, single-nucleotide polymorphisms and repetitive elements (SINE, LINE, etc.) have also been incorporated. The database is accessed through query pages that produce results with links to the UCSC browser and a GBrowse-based genomic viewer. It is freely accessible at http://nonb.abcc.ncifcrf.gov
Search for the standard model Higgs boson in the H to ZZ to 2l 2nu channel in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
A search for the standard model Higgs boson in the H to ZZ to 2l 2nu decay
channel, where l = e or mu, in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7
TeV is presented. The data were collected at the LHC, with the CMS detector,
and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 inverse femtobarns. No
significant excess is observed above the background expectation, and upper
limits are set on the Higgs boson production cross section. The presence of the
standard model Higgs boson with a mass in the 270-440 GeV range is excluded at
95% confidence level.Comment: Submitted to JHE
Measurement of the Forward-Backward Asymmetry in the B -> K(*) mu+ mu- Decay and First Observation of the Bs -> phi mu+ mu- Decay
We reconstruct the rare decays , , and in a data sample
corresponding to collected in collisions at
by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron
Collider. Using and decays we report the branching ratios. In addition, we report
the measurement of the differential branching ratio and the muon
forward-backward asymmetry in the and decay modes, and the
longitudinal polarization in the decay mode with respect to the squared
dimuon mass. These are consistent with the theoretical prediction from the
standard model, and most recent determinations from other experiments and of
comparable accuracy. We also report the first observation of the {\mathcal{B}}(B^0_s \to
\phi\mu^+\mu^-) = [1.44 \pm 0.33 \pm 0.46] \times 10^{-6}27 \pm 6B^0_s$ decay observed.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, 3 tables. Submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
