One third of the people on earth who are described as living in absolute poverty are found today in India. âThese people,â says Mr B K Satpathy, âare caught in a poverty trapâ.â âPoverty trap?â we ask. âThese are creative weavers; their cloth has a distinctive style, but those who supply their thread also take away and sell the cloth, paying just a small labor cost for each saree. If they are skilled and work hard this amounts to only 25-30 rupees (60-70 US cents) per day.â Under this arrangement, weaving does not provide enough to live on, and people are seeking ways to escape their entrapment in poverty. Rearing of Labeo bata in sewage-fed fish culture pond
Labeo bata is a highly priced fish which commanding good consumer preference, even if the size is very small (15 to 20 g each), especially in West Bengal. With a view to evaluating the culture potential of this fish, repeated experiments were conducted at the Wastewater Aquaculture Division of the Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture, Rahara, West Bengal, during 1991-93 in ponds fed with treated domestic sewage effluent. An average production of 1270.63 kg per ha was obtained within 6 to 10 months for a uniform stocking density of 50,000 seed per ha. The average size attained by the fish in the different sets of experiments varied from 23.3 to 37.9 g as against the initial weight of 0.096 to 0.193 g. The ability of Papaya ringspot virus strains overcoming the transgenic resistance of papaya conferred by the coat protein gene is not correlated with higher degrees of sequence divergence from the transgene
The coat protein (CP) gene mediated transgenic resistance is found to be the best approach for protecting papaya plants against the destructive disease caused by Papaya ringspot viruses (PRSV). In order to study the variability of PRSV and the potential threat to the CP-transgenic resistance, five virus isolates were collected from transgenic plants of papaya line 16-0-1, which carry the CP gene of the typical mosaic strain of Taiwan PRSV YK, in an approved test field and fourteen from untransformed papaya plants in different areas of Taiwan. The results of biological, serological, and molecular characterization indicated that all isolates are related to PRSV YK. Among them, the isolate 5-19 from the transgenic line and the isolates CS and TD2 from untransformed papaya were able to overcome the YK CP gene-mediated resistance of papaya lines 18-2-4, 17-0-5, and 16-0-1, which provide high degrees of resistance to different geographic PRSV strains of Hawaii (HA), Mexico (MX), and Thailand (TH). These three isolates were also able to cause symptoms on untransformed papaya plants more severe than those induced by YK. In addition to the host reactions, the variability of the collected 19 isolates was also analyzed and compared with YK and other geographic strains by heteroduplex mobility assay (HMA) and sequence analyses. The results of HMA indicated that the CP genes of isolates 5-19 and TD2 are more divergent than those of other isolates when compared with YK. However, sequence analyses of the transgenic-resistance overcoming isolates 5-19, CS, and TD2 revealed that their CP coding regions and the 3' untranslated regions (UTRs) share nucleotide identities of 93.9-96.6% and 94.2-97.9% with those of YK, respectively; whereas the other geographic strains of HA, MX, and TH that could not overcome the transgenic resistance share lower nucleotide identities of 89.8-92.6% and 92.3-95.3% with those of YK, respectively. Our results indicate that the ability for overcoming the transgenic resistance is not solely correlated with higher degrees of sequence divergence from the transgene. The possible mechanism for overcoming the transgenic resistance and the potential threat of these PRSV strains to the application of the transgenic papaya lines carrying PRSV YK CP gene are discussed
A New Class of Bianchi Type-I Cosmological Models in Scalar-Tensor Theory of Gravitation and Late Time Acceleration
A new class of a spatially homogeneous and anisotropic Bianchi type-I
cosmological models of the universe for perfect fluid distribution within the
framework of scalar-tensor theory of gravitation proposed by Saez and Ballester
(Phys. Lett. 113:467, 1986) is investigated. To prevail the deterministic
solutions we choose the different scale factors which yield time-dependent
deceleration parameters (DP) representing models which generate a transition of
the universe from the early decelerated phase to the recent accelerating phase.
Three different physically viable models of the universe are obtained in which
their anisotropic solutions may enter to some isotropic inflationary era. The
modified Einstein's field equations are solved exactly and the models are found
to be in good concordance with recent observations. Some physical and geometric

Co-evolution, opportunity seeking and institutional change: Entrepreneurship and the Indian telecommunications industry 1923-2009

Drawing on discourse and institutional theories, we develop a model of the entrepreneurial field, and apply this in analysing the rise to global prominence of the Indian telecommunications industry. We draw on entrepreneurial life histories to show how various discourses and discursive processes ultimately worked to generate change and the creation of new business opportunities. We propose that entrepreneurship involves more than individual acts of business creation, but also implies collective endeavours to shape the future direction of the entrepreneurial field
Search for a W' boson decaying to a bottom quark and a top quark in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
Results are presented from a search for a W' boson using a dataset
corresponding to 5.0 inverse femtobarns of integrated luminosity collected
during 2011 by the CMS experiment at the LHC in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV.
The W' boson is modeled as a heavy W boson, but different scenarios for the
couplings to fermions are considered, involving both left-handed and
right-handed chiral projections of the fermions, as well as an arbitrary
mixture of the two. The search is performed in the decay channel W' to t b,
leading to a final state signature with a single lepton (e, mu), missing
transverse energy, and jets, at least one of which is tagged as a b-jet. A W'
boson that couples to fermions with the same coupling constant as the W, but to
the right-handed rather than left-handed chiral projections, is excluded for
masses below 1.85 TeV at the 95% confidence level. For the first time using LHC
data, constraints on the W' gauge coupling for a set of left- and right-handed
coupling combinations have been placed. These results represent a significant

Search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying into two photons in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV
A search for a Higgs boson decaying into two photons is described. The
analysis is performed using a dataset recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC
from pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, which corresponds to an
integrated luminosity of 4.8 inverse femtobarns. Limits are set on the cross
section of the standard model Higgs boson decaying to two photons. The expected
exclusion limit at 95% confidence level is between 1.4 and 2.4 times the
standard model cross section in the mass range between 110 and 150 GeV. The
analysis of the data excludes, at 95% confidence level, the standard model
Higgs boson decaying into two photons in the mass range 128 to 132 GeV. The
largest excess of events above the expected standard model background is
observed for a Higgs boson mass hypothesis of 124 GeV with a local significance
of 3.1 sigma. The global significance of observing an excess with a local
significance greater than 3.1 sigma anywhere in the search range 110-150 GeV is
estimated to be 1.8 sigma. More data are required to ascertain the origin of
