    Low-Overhead Migration of Read-Only and Read-Mostly Data for Adapting Applications to Hybrid Memory Systems

    Memory systems containing different types of memory with varying capacity, latency, and bandwidth are rapidly becoming mainstream. Conventional memory management techniques do not suffice for these systems; they require alternative strategies to appropriately and effectively adapt application memory placement to these heterogeneous memory tiers. Software-based placement and movement strategies are the most desirable due to their flexibility and ease of adoption by end-users. However, there are substantial sources of overhead present when synchronizing low-level data movement with the operating system and running applications.This thesis proposes a novel method of reducing these memory movement overheads on hybrid memory systems. Many data objects are only written to early in their life cycle (i.e. shortly after allocation) and are effectively read-only after these initial writes. If this read-only and read-mostly data is duplicated across memory tiers, as opposed to moved, the application, in many cases, is able to avoid certain types of transfer overhead, such as page table entry (PTE) and MMU cache (TLB) synchronization stalls.This work describes the design and implementation of a kernel module, mtier that implements this optimization on memory that has been explicitly marked as read-only. Our evaluation demonstrates that this approach has the potential to substantially reduce data movement overheads, especially in applications that are multi-threaded and require frequent movement of data, allowing a flexible, software based approach for memory management in hybrid systems

    Managing Chronic Low Back Pain

    Chronic Low Back Pain remains a leading reason for ambulatory care visits, a leading primary diagnosis for ambulatory care visits, a leading cause of global burden, and the leading cause of lost workdays in the US. US Health expenditures for adults with chronic low back pain total over 102 billion. Chronic low back pain increases the risk of unemployment, poverty, obesity, smoking, and depression. Physical therapy (PT) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) have been proven to reduce chronic low back pain intensity and duration, improve function, reduce healthcare utilization and cost, and reduce sick time.     Survey of major trauma centre preparedness for mass casualty incidents in Australia, Canada, England and New Zealand

    Background: Mass casualty incidents (MCIs) are increasing. Trauma centres play a key role in MCIs due to their readiness and expansive multidisciplinary expertise for injury management. Previous studies have shown deficiencies in trauma centre disaster preparedness. The aim of this study was to describe the current disaster preparedness of Major Trauma Centres (MTCs) in Australia, Canada, England and New Zealand. Methods: A cross-sectional survey of all (n = 82) MTCs was undertaken. The anonymous survey collected data about disaster preparedness in nine key areas. Respondents were encouraged to consult appropriately at their centre to provide an accurate representation of their centre’s preparedness. Findings: Responses were received from 69 (84%) centres; 61 completed all questions. 91% had a disaster preparedness committee and 80% had an all-hazards emergency plan. 79% had held an MCI drill in the past 2 years. 54% reported a system in place to calculate maximum capacity, but testing of surge capacity was uncommon. 55% reported the presence of stored resources for an MCI and 58% had a database of staff trained in Emergency Management. 74% had a training and education plan available for staff involved in an MCI and a plan for professional debriefing of staff post-MCI, while 62% had a post-disaster employee assistance programme. Most centres had appropriate back-up communication, safety and security plans. Interpretation: The disaster preparedness of MTCs was high for communication, safety and security but there was clear need for improvement in other areas including surge capacity, human resources and post-disaster recovery

    Data Collection for the Study on Climate Change and Migration in the MENA Region

    A large part of this study is based on data collected in 2011 in five focus countries of the MENA region. In addition, other existing data sources were used as well, as documented in the various chapters that follow, but this need not be discussed in this chapter. This chapter documents the process followed and some of the choices made for new data collection, both quantitative and qualitative, for the study on climate change and migration in the MENA region. After a brief introduction, we explain the nature of the household survey questionnaire, what it enables us to document, as well as some of its limits. Next, we explain how the household survey sites were selected and how the samples were constructed in each of the five focus countries. We also provide a few comments on the challenges encountered during survey implementation. The chapter finally explains the process used for the focus group discussions and in-depth interview, as well as for the interviews with key informants conducted in each country

    The TW Hya Rosetta Stone Project. I. Radial and Vertical Distributions of DCN and DCO⁺

    Molecular D/H ratios are frequently used to probe the chemical past of solar system volatiles. Yet it is unclear which parts of the solar nebula hosted an active deuterium fractionation chemistry. To address this question, we present 0farcs2–0farcs4 Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of DCO⁺ and DCN 2–1, 3–2, and 4–3 toward the nearby protoplanetary disk around TW Hya, taken as part of the TW Hya Rosetta Stone project, augmented with archival data. DCO⁺ is characterized by an excitation temperature of ~40 K across the 70 au radius pebble disk, indicative of emission from a warm, elevated molecular layer. Tentatively, DCN is present at even higher temperatures. Both DCO⁺ and DCN present substantial emission cavities in the inner disk, while in the outer disk the DCO⁺ and DCN morphologies diverge: most DCN emission originates from a narrow ring peaking around 30 au, with some additional diffuse DCN emission present at larger radii, while DCO⁺ is present in a broad structured ring that extends past the pebble disk. Based on a set of simple parametric disk abundance models, these emission patterns can be explained by a near-constant DCN abundance exterior to the cavity, and an increasing DCO⁺ abundance with radius. In conclusion, the ALMA observations reveal an active deuterium fractionation chemistry in multiple disk regions around TW Hya, but not in the cold planetesimal-forming midplane and in the inner disk. More observations are needed to explore whether deuterium fractionation is actually absent in these latter regions, and if its absence is a common feature or something peculiar to the old TW Hya disk

    Molecular docking is a widely-used computational tool for the study of molecular recognition, which aims to predict the binding mode and binding affinity of a complex formed by two or more constituent molecules with known structures. An important type of molecular docking is protein-ligand docking because of its therapeutic applications in modern structure-based drug design. Here, we review the recent advances of protein flexibility, ligand sampling, and scoring functions—the three important aspects in protein-ligand docking.     The BioMart community portal: an innovative alternative to large, centralized data repositories.

    The BioMart Community Portal (www.biomart.org) is a community-driven effort to provide a unified interface to biomedical databases that are distributed worldwide. The portal provides access to numerous database projects supported by 30 scientific organizations. It includes over 800 different biological datasets spanning genomics, proteomics, model organisms, cancer data, ontology information and more. All resources available through the portal are independently administered and funded by their host organizations. The BioMart data federation technology provides a unified interface to all the available data. The latest version of the portal comes with many new databases that have been created by our ever-growing community. It also comes with better support and extensibility for data analysis and visualization tools. A new addition to our toolbox, the enrichment analysis tool is now accessible through graphical and web service interface. The BioMart community portal averages over one million requests per day. Building on this level of service and the wealth of information that has become available, the BioMart Community Portal has introduced a new, more scalable and cheaper alternative to the large data stores maintained by specialized organizations
