Transcranial direct current stimulation for memory enhancement: from clinical research to animal models
There is a growing demand for new brain-enhancing technologies to improve mental performance, both for patients with cognitive disorders and for healthy individuals. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive, painless, and easy to use neuromodulatory technique that can improve performance on a variety of cognitive tasks in humans despite its exact mode of action remains unclear. We have conducted a mini-review of the literature to first briefly summarize the growing amount of data from clinical trials assessing the efficacy of tDCS, focusing exclusively on learning and memory performances in healthy human subjects and in patients with depression, schizophrenia, and other neurological disorders. We then discuss these findings in the context of the strikingly few studies resulting from animal research. Finally, we highlight future directions and limitations in this field and emphasize the need to develop translational studies to better understand how tDCS improves memory, a necessary condition before it can be used as a therapeutic tool
A rightward shift in the visuospatial attention vector with healthy aging
The study of lateralised visuospatial attention bias in non-clinical samples has revealed a systematic group-level leftward bias (pseudoneglect), possibly as a consequence of right hemisphere dominance for visuospatial attention. Pseudoneglect appears to be modulated by age, with a reduced or even reversed bias typically present in elderly participants. It has been suggested that this shift in bias may arise due to disproportionate aging of the right hemisphere and/or an increase in complementary functional recruitment of the left hemisphere for visuospatial processing. In this study, we report rightward shifts in subjective midpoint judgement relative to healthy young participants whilst elderly participants performed a computerized version of the landmark task (in which they had to judge whether a transection mark appeared closer to the right or left end of a line) on three different line lengths. This manipulation of stimulus properties led to a similar behavioural pattern in both the young and the elderly: a rightward shift in subjective midpoint with decreasing line length, which even resulted in a systematic rightward bias in elderly participants for the shortest line length (1.98° of visual angle). Overall performance precision for the task was lower in the elderly participants regardless of line length, suggesting reduced landmark task discrimination sensitivity with healthy aging. This rightward shift in the attentional vector with healthy aging is likely to result from a reduction in right hemisphere resources/dominance for attentional processing in elderly participants. The significant rightward bias in the elderly for short lines may even suggest a reversal of hemisphere dominance in favour of the left hemisphere/right visual field under specific conditions
Bipolar disorder comorbid with alcohol use disorder: focus on neurocognitive correlates
Bipolar disorder (BD) and alcohol use disorders (AUDs) are usually comorbid, and both have been associated with significant neurocognitive impairment. Patients with the BD-AUD comorbidity (dual diagnosis) may have more severe neurocognitive deficits than those with a single diagnosis, but there is paucity of research in this area. To explore this hypothesis more thoroughly, we carried out a systematic literature review through January 2015. Eight studies have examined the effect of AUDs on the neurocognitive functioning of BD patients. Most studies found that BD patients with current or past history of comorbid AUDs show more severe impairments, especially in verbal memory and executive cognition, than their non-dual counterparts. Greater neurocognitive dysfunction is another facet of this severe comorbid presentation. Implications for clinical practice and research are discussed. Specifically, the application of holistic approaches, such as clinical staging and systems biology, may open new avenues of discoveries related to the BD-AUD comorbidity

| One of the public libraryâs missions is to favour cultural diversity by depositing, creating,
and promoting cultural resources and activities. It can inform about minorities and
the cultural integration of immigrants, without prejudice or manipulation. Bibliographic
collections in the local language should reflect the existing multicultural reality,
though it can prove difficult finding appropriate resources available in the market.
Resources should also be offered in the languages of the immigrants: newspapers and
music are good options that have had positive results. The public library can also play
an active role in supporting immigrants, through information services that help resolve
the main problems that these groups encounter: information on governmental procedures,
employment, training, health, education, organisations, etc. Information should
also be provided about the immigrantsâ new society: customs, norms for co-existence,
etc., or materials for learning the languages of the adopted country. As a place open to
all, the library offers a space for co-existence that can help to break ethnic stereotypes.
In order to be successful, the government must provide libraries with resources, and also
to redistribute or restructure existing resources, such as municipal information that
can be provided from the library without duplicating services or personnel. Above all
co-ordination and co-operation are necessary among libraries, city services and citizen
groups with ties to immigrants, in order to make the services more efficient
