Anaesthetic management of a patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) occlusion using an Amplatz canine duct occluder (ACDO) in a dog

    No full text
Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is one of the most common diagnosed congenital disease in dogs that usually causes heart failure and death unless corrected at a young age. A 2.5-year-old female intact Coton de Tuléar was referred and diagnosed with a left to right shunt PDA. Closure of the PDA was performed via a minimally invasive approach by means of an Amplatz canine duct occluder device. In this case report, we describe a successful anaesthetic protocol that included premedication using a combination of acepromazine and methadone, induction with propofol and midazolam and maintenance with isoflurane in oxygen, as well as a lidocaine constant rate constant rate infusion for intraoperative analgesic and cardiovascular support. This protocol provided excellent intraoperative cardiopulmonary stability and a smooth and rapid recovery

Steiner Education: freedom, spirituality and creativity

Although various aspects of Steiner Education and of Steiner’s philosophy and its related teaching approach have been explored in the literature, there appears to be few holistic studies into the ways in which this philosophy is practised and understood by teachers. This thesis moves from the available literature and explores Steiner’s philosophical background with the intention of shedding light on the pedagogical theories created by Steiner and how these are implemented in one Steiner school. The main focus of the research is on how Steiner’s philosophical notions of freedom, spirituality and creativity are enacted and understood in practice. The objective was to elucidate the nature and significance of these elements to learning, as well as understanding the physical context, conditions and arrangements in which they occur and are developed. To do this, an ethnographic study was conducted over a period of 9 months in a Steiner school in the UK. Qualitative data were collected through observations of participants, focus group and vis-a-vis interviews with staff, students, and parents, before being thematically analysed. The findings display a complex picture: on the one hand, it appears that Steiner’s philosophical background provides a common set of shared perspectives on what education is and this theoretical background appears to inform the practice of the teachers in the school. On the other hand, the three notions of freedom, spirituality and creativity do not emerge as separate domains, but rather as different elements of a unified educational practice represented by a holistic understanding of children’s development

InP-based membrane photodetectors on Si photonic circuitry

The work presented in this thesis is about indium phosphide (InP) based photodetectors for use in optical interconnections on silicon (Si) integrated circuits (ICs). The motivation for this work comes from the bottleneck expected at the interconnect level for future generation electronic ICs: with the technology scaling down and the signal switching frequency increasing, three main issues are predicted for the complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) ICs, namely signal propagation delay, power consumption and integration density. Electrical interconnects (EIs) strongly limit these characteristics and a promising solution is given by replacing EIs with optical interconnects (OIs). The implementation of intra-chip and chip-to-chip OIs requires the use of photonic integrated circuit (PIC) technology. The integration of optical sources, waveguides and detectors forming a photonic interconnect layer on top of the CMOS circuitry provides bandwidth increase, immunity to electromagnetic (EM) noise and reduction in power consumption. This solution was investigated within this work, which focuses on the detector part. InP-based membrane photodetectors were realized on InP dies bonded on Si and CMOS wafers, on top of which passive Si and Si3N4 photonic circuitry had been defined. This approach combines the advantages of high quality Si-based passive circuits with the excellent properties of InP-based components for light generation and detection. The technology used for the InP device fabrication is compatible with wafer scale processing steps, assuring compatibility towards future generation electronic ICs. The major results of this work are summarized as follows: InP membrane couplers and detectors were successfully fabricated on Si and Si3N4 photonic circuits. Experimental results show working active and passive devices, namely: passive Si photonic components (waveguides, MMIs, (de)-multiplexers), InP membrane couplers, InP-based detectors and heterogeneously integrated multiwavelength receivers. A working laser-to-detector integrated optical link on Si was successfully demonstrated. This work was carried out with the support of the European project IST-PICMOS and of the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs through the Smartmix Memphis project

Por Uma Vida Sem Catracas: The \u27June Uprising\u27 and Recent Movements in Brazil

The protests in Brazil in June 2013 which gained attention after a proposal to raise bus fares or what have come to be referred to as the `June Uprising\u27 and those that have since continued, far exceed the issue of bus fare in their significance. These events are only part of a series of movements and trends that are united by a common desire to create alternatives based on ideas of autonomy, solidarity, and horizontalism. This paper focuses on groups who are at the center of this struggle such as The Free Fare Movement, The Popular Committees for the World Cup and Olympics, Midia NINJA and others to show how they are collectively realizing another world by focusing on their practices, their relations with one another and the various spaces they are creating. At the heart of their struggle is not simply a wish to have a flat bus fare or to make demands upon the state but rather a desire to create another world themselves, free of oppression and exclusion. In fact, through their practices and in working together, they are building the foundations for another society while simultaneously breaking with and disrupting relationships and practices that reproduce the very problems they are fighting against

En el nombre de la madre: hacia un paradigma pospatriarcal

During more than 3000 years, patriarchal religions have symbolized a sociopolitical and ideological system, which dominated the history of the word up today. Nevertheless, since at least 2 centuries, the thinking and culture are announcing the death of God Father, and inquiring the destiny of the future humanity. The current paper aims at showing why the Great Goddess Mather symbolized the Other Name, in which subjectivity and culture have begun to pronounce themselves.

The indefinability of history and the concept of Machiavellianism itself, confirmed by the inaugural account made by Enzo Baldini, lead the historian of political thought to make some considerations and comments about their particular field of research, for which the present note hopes to both define Machiavelli's own Machiavellianism according to that which emerges from his pages and the ways and methods with which Machiavelli's ideas are used and adapted to specific historical situations. The observations made are illustrated and examples are provided with references to texts and accounts made in the congress

The vertical structure of upper ocean variability at the Porcupine Abyssal Plain during 2012-2013

This study presents the characterization of variability in temperature, salinity and oxygen concentration, including the vertical structure of the variability, in the upper 1000m of the ocean over a full year in the northeast Atlantic. Continuously profiling ocean gliders with vertical resolution between 0.5-1m provide more information on temporal variability throughout the water column than time series from moorings with sensors at a limited number of fixed depths. The heat, salt and dissolved oxygen content are quantified at each depth. While the near surface heat content is consistent with the net surface heat flux, heat content of the deeper layers is driven by gyre-scale water mass changes. Below ~150m, heat and salt content display intraseasonal variability which has not been resolved by previous studies. A mode-1 baroclinic internal tide is detected as a peak in the power spectra of water mass properties. The depth of minimum variability is at ~415m for both temperature and salinity, but this is a depth of high variability for oxygen concentration. The deep variability is dominated by the intermittent appearance of Mediterranean Water, which shows evidence of filamentation. Susceptibility to salt fingering occurs throughout much of the water column for much of the year. Between about 700-900m, the water column is susceptible to diffusive layering, particularly when Mediterranean Water is present. This unique ability to resolve both high vertical and temporal resolution highlights the importance of intraseasonal variability in upper ocean heat and salt content, variations that may be aliased by traditional observing techniques

Maternal action and social action: the case United States

This paper aims to analyzing the main theoretical and practical forms of social and political maternalism as it occurred in the United States between the late nineteenth century and the early twentieth century, and again between the late twentieth century and the early twentyfirst century. In particular, I will try to show the alliance between maternal action exerted in the private boundaries of the nuclear family, and the maternal care extended to the socio-political context of local and national community, alliance of which was born, in my view, the American social action and social work. This article seeks to reestablish the figure of Jane Addams as a feminist thinker, social theorist and worker. Jane Addams founded Social Work in the United States and created Hull House, earning her in 1931 the second Nobel Peace Prize awarded to a woman. Addams’ social thought works toward the construction of an ethical and democratic welfare state modeled on the maternal interactions of a feminine ethic rather than an ethic of competition and business gain.Fil: Binetti, María José.
