A late Pleistocene long pollen record from Lake Urmia, NW Iran
A palynological study based on two 100-m long cores from Lake Urmia in northwestern Iran provides a vegetation record spanning 200 ka, the longest pollen record for the continental interior of the Near East. During both penultimate and last glaciations, a steppe of Artemisia and Poaceae dominated the upland vegetation with a high proportion of Chenopodiaceae in both upland and lowland saline ecosystems. While Juniperus and deciduous Quercus trees were extremely rare and restricted to some refugia, Hippophaë rhamnoides constituted an important phanerophyte, particularly during the upper last glacial sediments. A pronounced expansion in Ephedra shrub-steppe occurred at the end of the penultimate late-glacial period but was followed by extreme aridity that favoured an Artemisia steppe. Very high lake levels, registered by both pollen and sedimentary markers, occurred during the middle of the last glaciation and upper part of the penultimate glaciation. The late-glacial to early Holocene transition is represented by a succession of Hippophaë, Ephedra, Betula, Pistacia and finally Juniperus and Quercus. The last interglacial period (Eemian), slightly warmer and moister than the Holocene, was followed by two interstadial phases similar in pattern to those recorded in the marine isotope record and southern European pollen sequences
Slot-mode-coupled optomechanical crystals
We present a design methodology and analysis of a cavity optomechanical
system in which a localized GHz frequency mechanical mode of a nanobeam
resonator is evanescently coupled to a high quality factor (Q>10^6) optical
mode of a separate nanobeam optical cavity. Using separate nanobeams provides
flexibility, enabling the independent design and optimization of the optics and
mechanics of the system. In addition, the small gap (approx. 25 nm) between the
two resonators gives rise to a slot mode effect that enables a large zero-point
optomechanical coupling strength to be achieved, with g/2pi > 300 kHz in a
Si3N4 system at 980 nm and g/2pi approx. 900 kHz in a Si system at 1550 nm. The
fact that large coupling strengths to GHz mechanical oscillators can be
achieved in SiN is important, as this material has a broad optical transparency
window, which allows operation throughout the visible and near-infrared. As an
application of this platform, we consider wide-band optical frequency
conversion between 1300 nm and 980 nm, using two optical nanobeam cavities
coupled on either side to the breathing mode of a mechanical nanobeam

Evanescent light-matter Interactions in Atomic Cladding Wave Guides
Alkali vapors, and in particular rubidium, are being used extensively in
several important fields of research such as slow and stored light non-linear
optics3 and quantum computation. Additionally, the technology of alkali vapors
plays a major role in realizing myriad industrial applications including for
example atomic clocks magentometers8 and optical frequency stabilization.
Lately, there is a growing effort towards miniaturizing traditional
centimeter-size alkali vapor cells. Owing to the significant reduction in
device dimensions, light matter interactions are greatly enhanced, enabling new
functionalities due to the low power threshold needed for non-linear
interactions. Here, taking advantage of the mature Complimentary
Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor (CMOS) compatible platform of silicon photonics, we
construct an efficient and flexible platform for tailored light vapor
interactions on a chip. Specifically, we demonstrate light matter interactions
in an atomic cladding wave guide (ACWG), consisting of CMOS compatible silicon
nitride nano wave-guide core with a Rubidium (Rb) vapor cladding. We observe
the highly efficient interaction of the electromagnetic guided mode with the
thermal Rb cladding. The nature of such interactions is explained by a model
which predicts the transmission spectrum of the system taking into account
Doppler and transit time broadening. We show, that due to the high confinement
of the optical mode (with a mode area of 0.3{\lambda}2), the Rb absorption
saturates at powers in the nW regime.Comment: 10 Pages 4 Figures. 1 Supplementar
A SOM-based Chan–Vese model for unsupervised image segmentation
Active Contour Models (ACMs) constitute an
efficient energy-based image segmentation framework. They usually deal with the segmentation problem as an optimization problem, formulated in terms of a suitable functional, constructed in such a way that its minimum is achieved in correspondence with a contour that is a close approximation of the actual object boundary. However, for existing ACMs, handling images that contain objects characterized by many different intensities still represents a challenge. In this paper, we propose a novel ACM that combines—in a global and unsupervised way—the advantages of the Self-Organizing Map (SOM) within the level set framework of a state-of-the-art unsupervised global ACM, the Chan–Vese (C–V) model. We term our proposed model SOM-based Chan– Vese (SOMCV) active contourmodel. It works by explicitly integrating the global information coming from the weights (prototypes) of the neurons in a trained SOM to help choosing whether to shrink or expand the current contour during the optimization process, which is performed in an iterative
way. The proposed model can handle images that contain
objects characterized by complex intensity distributions, and is at the same time robust to the additive noise. Experimental results show the high accuracy of the segmentation results obtained by the SOMCV model on several synthetic and real images, when compared to the Chan–Vese model and other image segmentation models
Multiethnic Genome-Wide Association Study of Diabetic Retinopathy Using Liability Threshold Modeling of Duration of Diabetes and Glycemic Control
Correction: Volume69, Issue6 Page1306-1306 DOI10.2337/db20-er06a Published JUN 2020To identify genetic variants associated with diabetic retinopathy (DR), we performed a large multiethnic genome-wide association study. Discovery included eight European cohorts (n = 3,246) and seven African American cohorts (n = 2,611). We meta-analyzed across cohorts using inverse-variance weighting, with and without liability threshold modeling of glycemic control and duration of diabetes. Variants with a P valuePeer reviewe
A novel formulation of inhaled sodium cromoglicate (PA101) in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and chronic cough: a randomised, double-blind, proof-of-concept, phase 2 trial
Background Cough can be a debilitating symptom of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and is difficult to treat. PA101 is a novel formulation of sodium cromoglicate delivered via a high-efficiency eFlow nebuliser that achieves significantly higher drug deposition in the lung compared with the existing formulations. We aimed to test the efficacy and safety of inhaled PA101 in patients with IPF and chronic cough and, to explore the antitussive mechanism of PA101, patients with chronic idiopathic cough (CIC) were also studied. Methods This pilot, proof-of-concept study consisted of a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in patients with IPF and chronic cough and a parallel study of similar design in patients with CIC. Participants with IPF and chronic cough recruited from seven centres in the UK and the Netherlands were randomly assigned (1:1, using a computer-generated randomisation schedule) by site staff to receive PA101 (40 mg) or matching placebo three times a day via oral inhalation for 2 weeks, followed by a 2 week washout, and then crossed over to the other arm. Study participants, investigators, study staff, and the sponsor were masked to group assignment until all participants had completed the study. The primary efficacy endpoint was change from baseline in objective daytime cough frequency (from 24 h acoustic recording, Leicester Cough Monitor). The primary efficacy analysis included all participants who received at least one dose of study drug and had at least one post-baseline efficacy measurement. Safety analysis included all those who took at least one dose of study drug. In the second cohort, participants with CIC were randomly assigned in a study across four centres with similar design and endpoints. The study was registered with ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT02412020) and the EU Clinical Trials Register (EudraCT Number 2014-004025-40) and both cohorts are closed to new participants. Findings Between Feb 13, 2015, and Feb 2, 2016, 24 participants with IPF were randomly assigned to treatment groups. 28 participants with CIC were enrolled during the same period and 27 received study treatment. In patients with IPF, PA101 reduced daytime cough frequency by 31·1% at day 14 compared with placebo; daytime cough frequency decreased from a mean 55 (SD 55) coughs per h at baseline to 39 (29) coughs per h at day 14 following treatment with PA101, versus 51 (37) coughs per h at baseline to 52 (40) cough per h following placebo treatment (ratio of least-squares [LS] means 0·67, 95% CI 0·48–0·94, p=0·0241). By contrast, no treatment benefit for PA101 was observed in the CIC cohort; mean reduction of daytime cough frequency at day 14 for PA101 adjusted for placebo was 6·2% (ratio of LS means 1·27, 0·78–2·06, p=0·31). PA101 was well tolerated in both cohorts. The incidence of adverse events was similar between PA101 and placebo treatments, most adverse events were mild in severity, and no severe adverse events or serious adverse events were reported. Interpretation This study suggests that the mechanism of cough in IPF might be disease specific. Inhaled PA101 could be a treatment option for chronic cough in patients with IPF and warrants further investigation
