    The dwarf galaxy DDO 47 as a dark matter laboratory: testing cusps hiding in triaxial halos

    We present an analysis of high resolution HI data of the dwarf galaxy DDO 47, aimed at testing the hypothesis that dark halo triaxiality might induce non-circular motions resulting in rotation curves best fitted by cored halos, even if the dark matter halo is intrinsically cuspy. This hypothesis could be invoked in order to reconcile the predictions of the standard LambdaCDM theory with the rotation curves of disk galaxies. DDO 47 is an ideal case to test this hypothesis because it has a very regular velocity field, its rotation curve is best fitted by a cored halo and a NFW halo is inconsistent with the data. We analysed the velocity field through the higher-order harmonic terms in order to search for kinematical signatures of alleged non-circular motions needed to "hide" a cusp: the result is that globally non-circular motions are at a level of 2-3 km/s, and they are more likely to be associated to the presence of some spiral structure than to a global elongated potential (e.g. a triaxial halo). These non-circular motions are far from being sufficient to account for the discrepancy with the LambdaCDM predictions.     When reduced input leads to delayed acquisition: a study on the acquisition of clitic placement by Portuguese heritage speakers

    This article examines the competence of heritage speakers of Portuguese living in Germany with respect to clitic placement in Portuguese by comparing their performance with that of monolingual speakers of the same age (7–15 years of age) in a test designed to elicit oral production data. The results of the study indicate that the heritage speakers go through stages in the acquisition of clitic placement that are similar to those of monolingual acquirers even though they take longer to attain the target grammar

    AGN duty cycle estimates for the ultra-steep spectrum radio relic VLSS J1431.8+1331

    Context. Steep spectrum radio sources associated with active galactic nuclei (AGN) may contain remnants of past AGN activity episodes. Studying these sources gives us insight into the AGN activity history. Novel instruments like the LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) are enabling studies of these fascinating structures to be made at tens to hundreds of MHz with sufficient resolution to analyse their complex morphology. Aims: Our goal is to characterize the integrated and resolved spectral properties of VLSS J1431+1331 and estimate source ages based on synchrotron radio emission models, thus putting constraints on the AGN duty cycle. Methods: Using a broad spectral coverage, we have derived spectral and curvature maps, and used synchrotron ageing models to determine the time elapsed from the last time the source plasma was energized. We used LOFAR, Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) and Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) data. Results: We confirm the morphology and the spectral index values found in previous studies of this object. Based on our ageing analysis, we infer that the AGN that created this source currently has very low levels of activity or that it is switched off. The derived ages for the larger source component range from around 60 to 130 Myr, hinting that the AGN activity decreased or stopped around 60 Myr ago. We observe that the area around the faint radio core located in the larger source component is the youngest, while the overall age of the smaller source component shows it to be the oldest part of the source. Conclusions: Our analysis suggests that VLSS J1431.8+1331 is an intriguing, two-component source. The larger component seems to host a faint radio core, suggesting that the source may be an AGN radio relic. The spectral index we observe from the smaller component is distinctly flatter at lower frequencies than the spectral index of the larger component, suggesting the possibility that the smaller component may be a shocked plasma bubble. From the integrated source spectrum, we deduce that its shape and slope can be used as tracers of the activity history of this type of steep spectrum radio source. We discuss the implications this conclusion has for future studies of radio sources having similar characteristics

    The peculiar radio galaxy 4C 35.06: a case for recurrent AGN activity?

    Using observations obtained with the LOw Fequency ARray (LOFAR), the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT) and archival Very Large Array (VLA) data, we have traced the radio emission to large scales in the complex source 4C 35.06 located in the core of the galaxy cluster Abell 407. At higher spatial resolution (~ 4″), the source was known to have two inner radio lobes spanning 31 kpc and a diffuse, low-brightness extension running parallel to them, offset by about 11 kpc (in projection). At 62 MHz, we detect the radio emission of this structure extending out to 210 kpc. At 1.4 GHz and intermediate spatial resolution (~ 30″), the structure appears to have a helical morphology. We have derived the characteristics of the radio spectral index across the source. We show that the source morphology is most likely the result of at least two episodes of AGN activity separated by a dormant period of around 35 Myr. The outermost regions of radio emission have a steep spectral index (α-1), similar to what is found in other clusters. The derived column density is NHI ~ 4 × 1020 cm-2 for a Tspin = 100 K. This detection supports the connection – already suggested for other restarted radio sources – between the presence of cold gas and restarting activity. The cold gas appears to be dominated by a blue-shifted component although the broad H I profile could also include gas with different kinematics. Understanding the duty cycle of the radio emission as well as the triggering mechanism for starting (or restarting) the radio-loud activity can provide important constraints to quantify the impact of AGN feedback on galaxy evolution. The study of these mechanisms at low frequencies using morphological and spectral information promises to bring new important insights in this field

    Identification of target genes for wild type and truncated HMGA2 in mesenchymal stem-like cells

    Background The HMGA2 gene, coding for an architectural transcription factor involved in mesenchymal embryogenesis, is frequently deranged by translocation and/or amplification in mesenchymal tumours, generally leading to over-expression of shortened transcripts and a truncated protein. Methods To identify pathways that are affected by sarcoma-associated variants of HMGA2, we have over-expressed wild type and truncated HMGA2 protein in an immortalized mesenchymal stem-like cell (MSC) line, and investigated the localisation of these proteins and their effects on differentiation and gene expression patterns. Results Over-expression of both transgenes blocked adipogenic differentiation of these cells, and microarray analysis revealed clear changes in gene expression patterns, more pronounced for the truncated protein. Most of the genes that showed altered expression in the HMGA2-overexpressing cells fell into the group of NF-κB-target genes, suggesting a central role for HMGA2 in this pathway. Of particular interest was the pronounced up-regulation of SSX1, already implicated in mesenchymal oncogenesis and stem cell functions, only in cells expressing the truncated protein. Furthermore, over-expression of both HMGA2 forms was associated with a strong repression of the epithelial marker CD24, consistent with the reported low level of CD24 in cancer stem cells. Conclusions We conclude that the c-terminal part of HMGA2 has important functions at least in mesenchymal cells, and the changes in gene expression resulting from overexpressing a protein lacking this domain may add to the malignant potential of sarcomas

    Rearrangements of the high mobility group protein I-C (HMGI-C) gene, consisting in the loss of the carboxyl-terminal tail, have been frequently detected in benign human tumors of mesenchymal origin. We have previously demonstrated that transgenic (TG) mice carrying a truncated HMGI-C construct (HMGI-C/T) exhibit a giant phenotype together with a predominantly abdominal/pelvic lipomatosis. Here, we report that HMGI-C/T TG mice develop natural killer (NK)-T/NK cell lymphomas starting from 12 months of age. We found an increased expression of IL-2 and IL-15 proteins and their receptors in these lymphomas, and we demonstrate that HMGI-C/T protein positively regulates their expression in vitro. Therefore, the HMGI-C/T-mediated chronic stimulation of the IL-2/IL-15 pathway could be responsible for the onset of NK-T/NK cell lymphomas in HMGI-C/T TG mice

    In frogs such as Rana and Xenopus, metamorphosis does not occur in the absence of a functional thyroid gland. Previous studies indicated that coordinated development in frogs requires tissue and stage-dependent type II and type III iodothyronine deiodinase expression patterns to obtain requisite levels of intracellular T3 in tissues at the appropriate stages of metamorphosis. No type I iodothyronine deiodinase (D1), defined as T4 or reverse T3 (rT3) outer-ring deiodinase (ORD) activity with Michaelis constant (Km) values in the micromolar range and sensitivity to 6-propyl-2-thiouracil (6-PTU), could be detected in tadpoles so far. We obtained a X. laevis D1 cDNA clone from brain tissue. The complete sequence of this clone (1.1 kb, including poly A tail) encodes an ORF of 252 amino acid residues with high homology to other vertebrate D1 enzymes. The core catalytic center includes a UGA-encoded selenocysteine residue, and the 3′ untranslated region (about 300 nt) contains a selenocysteine insertion sequence element. Transfection of cells with an expression vector containing the full-length cDNA resulted in generation of significant deiodinase activity in the homogenates. The enzyme displayed ORD activity with T4 (K m 0.5 μM) and rT3 (Km 0.5 μM) and inner-ring deiodinase activity with T4 (Km 0.4 μM). Recombinant Xenopus D1 was essentially insensitive to inhibition by 6-PTU (IC50 > 1 mM) but was sensitive to gold thioglucose (IC50 0.1 μM) and iodoacetate (IC50 10 μM). Because the residue 2 positions downstream from the selenocysteine is Pro in Xenopus D1 but Ser in all cloned PTU-sensitive D1 enzymes, we prepared the Pro132Ser mutant of Xenopus D1. The mutant enzyme showed strongly increased ORD activity with T4 and rT3 (Km about 4 μM) and was highly sensitive to 6-PTU (IC50 2 μM). Little native D1 activity could be detected in Xenopus liver, kidney, brain, and gut, but significant D1 mRNA expression was observed in juvenile brain and adult liver and kidney. These results indicate the existence of a 6-PTU-insensitive D1 enzyme in X. laevis tissues, but its role during tadpole metamorphosis remains to be defined. Copyrigh

    A plea for varieties of entrepreneurship

    Research into the link between national institutions and entrepreneurship is characterized by three shortcomings: First, clear-cut concepts of institutions are rare. Second, a parsimonious understanding of how a few core institutions influence entrepreneurship is missing. Third, scholars often ignore that incrementally innovative ventures constitute a distinct (and under-researched) type of entrepreneurship next to the (over-researched) form of radically innovative, high-growth or high-tech entrepreneurship. By addressing these three shortcomings, the Varieties-of-Capitalism (VoC) literature can explain how a core group of distinct national institutions facilitate the development of different types of entrepreneurship between countries. In particular, the VoC framework illustrates the comparative institutional advantage that continental European economies offer to incrementally innovative ventures. Applications of the VoC reasoning to entrepreneurship studies would thus allow researchers to, first, perform focused rather than eclectic analyses of institutional influences on entrepreneurship. Second, it would pave the way for research into institutionally induced equifinality. Third, entrepreneurship research could move away from its wishful ideology displaying radically innovative entrepreneurship as the most desirable form of entrepreneurship. As a consequence, policymakers could target entrepreneurial support measures more specifically to their economy’s institutional environment
