The Relationship Between Perceived and Ideal Body Size and Body Mass Index Among 9th Grade Students in an Urban High School
This study examined the perceptions of actual and ideal body size and how it related to body mass index in 82 ethnically and socioeconomically diverse 9th-graders from an urban high school. The height and weight were measured, and BMI was calculated for each of the 82 participants. Using the Childress Silhouette Scale (CSS), each student self-reported Perceived Actual Self Image (P ASI) and Perceived Ideal Self Image (PISI). The CSS was modified to offer 7 figure drawings that illustrated various examples of underweight, healthy weight, overweight, and obese. Results showed that 54% ofthe students had a healthy weight, 21% were overweight, and 15% were obese. The students\u27 PASI and PISI showed a small positive correlation. Students with a higher BJv.fl had a greater tendency to choose a higher P ASI and PIS I. The main difference between boys and girls regarding perceived ideal self-image (PISI) was that girls chose an underweight figure whereas boys chose a healthy weight figure
An Evaluation of eScience Lab Kits for Online Learning
Higher education online science courses generally lack the hands-on components essential in understanding theories, methods, and techniques in chemistry and biology. Companies like eScience Labs construct kits to facilitate online learning, which provide students with hands-on activities relevant to their science courses. In order to evaluate ease, efficacy, and comprehension of the forensic science kits by eScience Labs was completed while writing observations of the activities during and after completion; the lab manual learning objectives were compared to results of activities and two stopwatches took elapsed time of each activity to compare with the stated times in the kit manual. This method determined that the eScience manual does not provide enough information for a college freshman to fully understand the topic; however, combining these labs with professor provided online lectures would allow full comprehension of the forensic science applications or techniques. Recommendations to obtain maximum learning outcomes include requiring the completion of prerequisites like algebra and general chemistry. With these aspects combined, the eScience lab kit is a great addition to an introductory forensic science course as it provides safe and interactive hands-on activities
A new generic and new specific synonym in the genus Euphoria Burmeister (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Cetoniinae: Cetoniini)
Based on a study of the characters used to define it, the genus Euphoriopsis Casey is placed in synonymy with Euphoria Burmeister. Euphoria punicea Janson is placed in synonymy with Euphoria steinheili Janson. Morphological characters supporting the synonymies, and the species' distributions and biological data are reviewed.Basado en un estudio de los caracteres que fueron usados para definirlo, el gĂ©nero Euphoriopsis Casey es considerado como sinĂłnimo del genero Euphoria Burmeister. Analysis of Quiet-Sun Internetwork Magnetic Fields Based on Linear Polarization Signals
We present results from the analysis of Fe I 630 nm measurements of the quiet
Sun taken with the spectropolarimeter of the Hinode satellite. Two data sets
with noise levels of 1.2{\times}10-3 and 3{\times}10-4 are employed. We
determine the distribution of field strengths and inclinations by inverting the
two observations with a Milne-Eddington model atmosphere. The inversions show a
predominance of weak, highly inclined fields. By means of several tests we
conclude that these properties cannot be attributed to photon noise effects. To
obtain the most accurate results, we focus on the 27.4% of the pixels in the
second data set that have linear polarization amplitudes larger than 4.5 times
the noise level. The vector magnetic field derived for these pixels is very
precise because both circular and linear polarization signals are used
simultaneously. The inferred field strength, inclination, and filling factor
distributions agree with previous results, supporting the idea that
internetwork fields are weak and very inclined, at least in about one quarter
of the area occupied by the internetwork. These properties differ from those of
network fields. The average magnetic flux density and the mean field strength
derived from the 27.4% of the field of view with clear linear polarization
signals are 16.3 Mx cm-2 and 220 G, respectively. The ratio between the average
horizontal and vertical components of the field is approximately 3.1. The
internetwork fields do not follow an isotropic distribution of orientations.Comment: To appear in APJ, Vol 749, 201
Anodized aluminium pressure sensitive paint: effect of paint application technique
The porous surface of the Anodized Aluminium Pressure Sensitive Paint (AA-PSP) is what differentiates it from conventional sol–gel based PSPs, leading to a faster response time of the paint. The objective of the current study is to examine the effect of the paint application technique, i.e., whether the AA substrate is dipped or sprayed, on the pressure and temperature sensitivity. A more practical procedure for preparing the AA samples is also presented. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) images are acquired together with the calibration of the AA-PSP at various temperatures and pressures to determine the effectiveness of each application technique. The results revealed that the AA sample which was dipped in the PSP solution shows a higher pressure sensitivity than the sprayed one. The SEMs show that spraying leads to the covering up of the micropores created on the surface and undermining the benefit of anodization
