    Le Trematodosi di interesse ispettivo nei ruminanti della Sardegna: rilievi tassonomici biomolecolari, aggiornamenti epidemiologici e valutazione protocolli terapeutici

    The present research highlights how trematodes of inspection interest in the sheep and cattle in Sardinia (Italy) are still a major health livestock problem. In particular, copromicroscopic and slaughterhouse investigations reveal a marked drop of the prevalence of F. hepatica, an infestion “stability” for D. dendriticum, and an emerging role for paramfistomosis in cattle and sheep. A questionnaire compiled by practicioners on the control of D. dendriticum in sheep farms showed a scarce use of copromicroscopic diagnosis and the use not always rational dose and mode of administration of drugs. For this reason, experimental field trials were carried out to monitor the effectiveness of different treatment protocols implemented in the island which have indicated a probable resistance of D. dendriticum to albenzazole in sheep, on which this molecule seems to act at a double dosage than generally recommended for this fluke , while seems to be still effective against D. dendriticum in cattle. Optimal levels of efficacy were detected for Oxyclozanide + levamisole against sheep paramfistomosis only at doses 1.5 times higher than that reported for other trematodosi (F. hepatica)

    Canine giardiosis in Sardinia Island, Italy: prevalence, molecular characterization, and risk factors

    Introduction: The flagellate protozoan Giardia duodenalis causes infection in humans and in various animals. Eight distinct assemblages (A-H) have been identified within G. duodenalis; assemblages A and B are those specific to humans and animals, and assemblages C to H are restricted to animal hosts. Methodology: The present study estimated the prevalence of G. duodenalis assemblages in dogs living in the Sardinia region and evaluated the related risk factors. Individual fecal samples were collected from 655 dogs between January 2007 and December 2010, and a form was filled out for each animal to analyze historic data that were available at the time of sampling. Fecal samples were subjected to microscopic and genetic investigations. Results: Cysts of G. duodenalis were found in 172 (26.3%) samples, with significant values in puppies between three and nine months of age, and in kennelled and hunting dogs. The molecular characterization showed the presence of assemblages D (49%), C (36.1%), and subtype A2 (4.2%). Conclusion: The present survey contributes to the knowledge of the occurrence of canine giardiosis in Italy in a region with a high number of dogs and numerous animal movements, which is especially relevant for touristic reasons.</br

    Preliminary data on the microbial profile of dry and wet aged bovine meat obtained from different breeds in Sardinia

    This study aimed to evaluate the influence of dry and wet aging on microbial profile and physicochemical characteristics of bovine loins obtained from four animals of two different breeds, namely two Friesian cull cows and two Sardo-Bruna bovines. During dry and wet aging aerobic colony count, Enterobacteriaceae, mesophilic lactic acid bacteria, Pseudomonas, molds and yeasts, Salmonella enterica, Listeria monocytogenes and Yersinia enterocolitica, pH and water activity (aw) were determined in meat samples collected from the internal part of the loins. Moreover, the microbial profile was determined with sponge samples taken from the surface of the meat cuts. Samples obtained from Friesian cows were analyzed starting from the first day of the aging period and after 7, 14, and 21 days. Samples obtained from the Sardo Bruna bovines were also analyzed after 28 and 35 days. Wet aging allowed better control of Pseudomonas spp. during storage that showed statistically lower levels (P>0.05) in wet-aged meats with respect to dry-aged meats during aging and particularly at the end of the period (P>0.01) in both cattle breeds. At the end of the experiment (21 days), aerobic colony count and Pseudomonas in Fresian cows’ dry-aged meats showed mean levels >8 log, while lactic acid bacteria mean counts >7 log were detected in wet-aged meats of both cattle breeds. In meats submitted to dry aging, pH was significantly higher (P<0.01) with respect to wet-aged meats at all analysis times and in both cattle breeds. Aw showed a stable trend during both dry and wet aging without significant differences. These preliminary results highlight the critical importance of the strict application of good hygiene practices during all stages of production of these particular cuts of meat intended for aging

MASK digital anamorphosis represents the process used by MASK to develop the digital transformation of health and care in rhinitis. It strengthens the ARIA change management strategy in the prevention and management of airway disease. The MASK strategy is based on validated digital tools.     Cabbage and fermented vegetables : From death rate heterogeneity in countries to candidates for mitigation strategies of severe COVID-19

    Large differences in COVID-19 death rates exist between countries and between regions of the same country. Some very low death rate countries such as Eastern Asia, Central Europe, or the Balkans have a common feature of eating large quantities of fermented foods. Although biases exist when examining ecological studies, fermented vegetables or cabbage have been associated with low death rates in European countries. SARS-CoV-2 binds to its receptor, the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2). As a result of SARS-CoV-2 binding, ACE2 downregulation enhances the angiotensin II receptor type 1 (AT(1)R) axis associated with oxidative stress. This leads to insulin resistance as well as lung and endothelial damage, two severe outcomes of COVID-19. The nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2 (Nrf2) is the most potent antioxidant in humans and can block in particular the AT(1)R axis. Cabbage contains precursors of sulforaphane, the most active natural activator of Nrf2. Fermented vegetables contain many lactobacilli, which are also potent Nrf2 activators. Three examples are: kimchi in Korea, westernized foods, and the slum paradox. It is proposed that fermented cabbage is a proof-of-concept of dietary manipulations that may enhance Nrf2-associated antioxidant effects, helpful in mitigating COVID-19 severity.Peer reviewe

    Nrf2-interacting nutrients and COVID-19 : time for research to develop adaptation strategies

    There are large between- and within-country variations in COVID-19 death rates. Some very low death rate settings such as Eastern Asia, Central Europe, the Balkans and Africa have a common feature of eating large quantities of fermented foods whose intake is associated with the activation of the Nrf2 (Nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2) anti-oxidant transcription factor. There are many Nrf2-interacting nutrients (berberine, curcumin, epigallocatechin gallate, genistein, quercetin, resveratrol, sulforaphane) that all act similarly to reduce insulin resistance, endothelial damage, lung injury and cytokine storm. They also act on the same mechanisms (mTOR: Mammalian target of rapamycin, PPAR gamma:Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor, NF kappa B: Nuclear factor kappa B, ERK: Extracellular signal-regulated kinases and eIF2 alpha:Elongation initiation factor 2 alpha). They may as a result be important in mitigating the severity of COVID-19, acting through the endoplasmic reticulum stress or ACE-Angiotensin-II-AT(1)R axis (AT(1)R) pathway. Many Nrf2-interacting nutrients are also interacting with TRPA1 and/or TRPV1. Interestingly, geographical areas with very low COVID-19 mortality are those with the lowest prevalence of obesity (Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia). It is tempting to propose that Nrf2-interacting foods and nutrients can re-balance insulin resistance and have a significant effect on COVID-19 severity. It is therefore possible that the intake of these foods may restore an optimal natural balance for the Nrf2 pathway and may be of interest in the mitigation of COVID-19 severity

    Effects of anthelmintic treatment on milk production in Sarda dairy ewes naturally infected by gastrointestinal nematodes

    The objective of this work was to investigate the effects of a single anthelmintic treatment on milk production. In 2008, in a flock of Sarda ewes naturally infected by gastrointestinal nematodes, 162 adult and 72 primiparous ewes were allocated into four groups. For each age class, one group was drenched with albendazole after lamb weaning whilst the other was left untreated as control. The efficacy of single anthelmintic treatment at the beginning of lactation was obtained by a faecal egg count reduction test. The effect of drenching on milk yield and components was studied both using single test date and lactation records. After 1 month geometric mean of eggs per gram of treated ewes decreased up to 1% of the initial value (3.40 eggs/g versus 322.63 eggs/g in primiparous and 2.14 eggs/g versus 312.70 eggs/g in adult ewes). The anthelmintic treatment showed a significant effect only on lactation milk yield of treated adult ewes that produced 19.2 L/year more than control ewes. Production level was investigated as a criterion to apply targeted selective treatment. High producer multiparous ewes produced 32.7 L/year more than control ones. Overall results confirm a beneficial effect of anthelmintic treatment on milk production without any detrimental effect on milk composition only on adult ewes markedly if high producers. Thus, depending on milk price and the required length of the period of discarded milk, the increased milk yield can counterbalance treatment's costs

    Determinants of ECC in Sardinian preschool children

    OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to assess the influence of determinants on the presence of caries in pre-school children. BASIC RESEARCH DESIGN: A matched case-control study (1:2) was designed: 55 children (32 males, 23 females) with at least one buccal or lingual caries lesion on one primary maxillary incisor were selected (caries affected=1) and compared to randomly selected controls (no caries=0) paired for age and gender. Several variables concerning oral hygiene habits, use of fluoride supplementation, dietary habits, socio-economic status of the family and lifestyle factors were considered as risk predictors for early childhood caries (ECC). A conditional logistic regression model was used to perform matched case-control analysis. RESULTS: Bottle feeding at night (OR=1.90; 95%CI=1.03-3.50) and socio-economic level (OR=1.69; 95%CI=1.01-2.81) were positively associated with case status. CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that ECC seemed to be associated with bottle feeding at night and a low socio-economic level.</br
