Nutrient Addition Effects on Phytoplankton Communities in the Amazon River Plume
The types and abundance of phytoplankton is largely controlled by availability of sunlight and bioavailable nutrients. Phytoplankton require essential nutrients including nitrate, phosphate, and silicate to grow, so understanding the role of these macronutrients in limiting the growth phytoplankton communitiesand the way this may differ depending on community compositionis key to understanding the controls on phytoplankton biomass and community structure. We aimed to explore how the availability of these nutrients affects the health and composition of phytoplankton communities by conducting a series of nutrient amendment experiments (NAEs) with samples from the Western Tropical North Atlantic, which is heavily influenced by the nutrient-rich, low salinity waters of the Amazon River Plume. These experiments, conducted at five locations in and around the plume, provide greater resolution and further our understanding about the ways nutrients affect communities in dynamic coastal regions
httk: R Package for High-Throughput Toxicokinetics
Thousands of chemicals have been profiled by high-throughput screening programs such as ToxCast and Tox21; these chemicals are tested in part because most of them have limited or no data on hazard, exposure, or toxicokinetics. Toxicokinetic models aid in predicting tissue concentrations resulting from chemical exposure, and a "reverse dosimetry" approach can be used to predict exposure doses sufficient to cause tissue concentrations that have been identified as bioactive by high-throughput screening. We have created four toxicokinetic models within the R software package httk. These models are designed to be parameterized using high-throughput in vitro data (plasma protein binding and hepatic clearance), as well as structure-derived physicochemical properties and species-specific physiological data. The package contains tools for Monte Carlo sampling and reverse dosimetry along with functions for the analysis of concentration vs. time simulations. The package can currently use human in vitro data to make predictions for 553 chemicals in humans, rats, mice, dogs, and rabbits, including 94 pharmaceuticals and 415 ToxCast chemicals. For 67 of these chemicals, the package includes rat-specific in vitro data. This package is structured to be augmented with additional chemical data as they become available. Discovery of a new photometric sub-class of faint and fast classical novae
We present photometric and spectroscopic follow-up of a sample of
extragalactic novae discovered by the Palomar 60-inch telescope during a search
for "Fast Transients In Nearest Galaxies" (P60-FasTING). Designed as a fast
cadence (1-day) and deep (g < 21 mag) survey, P60-FasTING was particularly
sensitive to short-lived and faint optical transients. The P60-FasTING nova
sample includes 10 novae in M31, 6 in M81, 3 in M82, 1 in NGC2403 and 1 in
NGC891. This significantly expands the known sample of extragalactic novae
beyond the Local Group, including the first discoveries in a starburst
environment. Surprisingly, our photometry shows that this sample is quite
inconsistent with the canonical Maximum Magnitude Rate of Decline (MMRD)
relation for classical novae. Furthermore, the spectra of the P60-FasTING
sample are indistinguishable from classical novae. We suggest that we have
uncovered a sub-class of faint and fast classical novae in a new phase space in
luminosity-timescale of optical transients. Thus, novae span two orders of
magnitude in both luminosity and time. Perhaps, the MMRD, which is
characterized only by the white dwarf mass, was an over-simplification. Nova
physics appears to be characterized by quite a rich four-dimensional parameter
space in white dwarf mass, temperature, composition and accretion rate.Comment: Submitted to ApJ, 12 pages. High resolution version at

Five-Year Optical and Near Infrared Observations of the Extremely Slow Nova V1280 Scorpii
We present optical (, , , and ) and near
infrared (, and ) photometric and spectroscopic observations
of a classical nova V1280 Scorpii for five years from 2007 to 2011. Our
photometric observations show a declining event in optical bands shortly after
the maximum light which continues 250 days. The event is most probably
caused by a dust formation. The event is accompanied by a short ( 30
days) re-brightening episode ( 2.5 mag in ), which suggests a
re-ignition of the surface nuclear burning. After 2008, the band
observations show a very long plateau at around = 10.5 for more than 1000
days until April 2011 ( 1500 days after the maximum light). The nova had
taken a very long time ( 50 months) before entering the nebular phase
(clear detection of both [\ion{O}{iii}] 4959 and 5007) and is still continuing
to generate the wind caused by H-burning. The finding suggests that V1280 Sco
is going through the historically slowest evolution. The interval from the
maximum light (2007 February 16) to the beginning of the nebular phase is
longer than any previously known slow novae: V723 Cas (18 months), RR Pic (10
months), or HR Del (8 months). It suggests that the mass of a white dwarf in
the V1280 Sco system might be 0.6 M_\mathrm{\sun} or smaller. The distance,
based on our measurements of the expansion velocity combined with the directly

The Emergence of the Infrared transient VVV-WIT-06
We report the discovery of an enigmatic large-amplitude (ΔKs> 10.5 mag) transient event in near-IR data obtained by the VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea (VVV) ESO Public Survey. The object (designated VVV-WIT-06) is located at R.A. = 17:07:18.917, decl. = -39:06:26.45 (J2000), corresponding to Galactic coordinates l = 347.14539, b = 0.88522. It exhibits a clear eruption, peaking at Ks = 9 mag during 2013 July and fading to Ks ~ 16.5 in 2017. Our late near-IR spectra show post-outburst emission lines, including some broad emission lines (upward of {FWHM} ~ 3000 k/s). We estimate a total extinction of A_V=10--15 mag in the surrounding field, and no progenitor was observed in ZYJHKs images obtained during 2010-2012 (down to Ks> 18.5 mag). Subsequent deep near-IR imaging and spectroscopy, in concert with the available multiband photometry, indicate that VVV-WIT-06 may be either: (I) the closest Type I SN observed in about 400 years, (II) an exotic high-amplitude nova that would extend the known realm of such objects, or (III) a stellar merger. In all of these cases, VVV-WIT-06 is a fascinating and curious astrophysical target under any of the scenarios considered.Peer reviewe
V496 Scuti: An Fe II nova with dust shell accompanied by CO emission
We present near-infrared and optical observations of the nova V496 Scuti 2009
covering various phases - pre-maximum, early decline and nebular - during the
first 10 months of its discovery followed by limited observations in early part
of 2011 April. The spectra follow the evolution of the nova when the lines had
strong P Cygni profiles to a phase dominated by prominent emission lines. The
notable feature of the near-IR spectra in the early decline phase is the rare
presence of first overtone bands of carbon monoxide in emission. Later about
150 days after the peak brightness the IR spectra show clear dust formation in
the expanding ejecta. Dust formation in V496 Sct is consistent with the
presence of lines of elements with low ionization potentials like Na and Mg in
the early spectra and the detection of CO bands in emission. The light curve
shows a slow rise to the maximum and a slow decline indicating a prolonged mass
loss. This is corroborated by the strengthening of P Cygni profiles during the
first 30 days. In the spectra taken close to the optical maximum brightness,
the broad and single absorption component seen at the time of discovery is
replaced by two sharper components. During the early decline phase two sharp
dips that show increasing outflow velocities are seen in the P Cygni absorption
components of Fe II and H I lines. The spectra in 2010 March showed the onset
of the nebular phase. Several emission lines display saddle-like profiles
during the nebular phase. In the nebular stage the observed fluxes of [O III]
and H-beta lines are used to estimate the electron number densities and the
mass of the ejecta. The optical spectra show that the nova evolved in the P_fe
A_o spectral sequence. The physical conditions in the ejecta are estimated. The
absolute magnitude and the distance to the nova are estimated to be M_V = -7.0
+/- 0.2 and d = 2.9 +/- 0.3 kpc respectively.Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures and 6 Tables, Accepted for Publication in MNRA
Supernovae and radio transients in M 82
We present optical and near-infrared (IR) photometry and near-IR spectroscopy
of SN 2004am, the only optically detected supernova (SN) in M 82. These
demonstrate that SN 2004am was a highly reddened type II-P SN similar to the
low luminosity type II-P events such as SNe 1997D and 2005cs. We show that SN
2004am was located coincident with the obscured super star cluster M 82-L, and
from the cluster age infer a progenitor mass of 12 +7/-3 Msun. In addition to
this, we present a high spatial resolution Gemini-N K-band adaptive optics
image of the site of SN 2008iz and a second transient of uncertain nature, both
detected so far only at radio wavelengths. Using image subtraction techniques
together with archival data from the Hubble Space Telescope, we are able to
recover a near-IR transient source co-incident with both objects. We find the
likely extinction towards SN 2008iz to be not more than Av ~ 10. The nature of
the second transient remains elusive and we regard an extremely bright
microquasar in M 82 as the most plausible scenario.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA
Accurate reconstruction of insertion-deletion histories by statistical phylogenetics
The Multiple Sequence Alignment (MSA) is a computational abstraction that
represents a partial summary either of indel history, or of structural
similarity. Taking the former view (indel history), it is possible to use
formal automata theory to generalize the phylogenetic likelihood framework for
finite substitution models (Dayhoff's probability matrices and Felsenstein's
pruning algorithm) to arbitrary-length sequences. In this paper, we report
results of a simulation-based benchmark of several methods for reconstruction
of indel history. The methods tested include a relatively new algorithm for
statistical marginalization of MSAs that sums over a stochastically-sampled
ensemble of the most probable evolutionary histories. For mammalian
evolutionary parameters on several different trees, the single most likely
history sampled by our algorithm appears less biased than histories
reconstructed by other MSA methods. The algorithm can also be used for
alignment-free inference, where the MSA is explicitly summed out of the
analysis. As an illustration of our method, we discuss reconstruction of the

Disparities in the use of ambulatory surgical centers: a cross sectional study
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Ambulatory surgical centers (ASCs) provide outpatient surgical services more efficiently than hospital outpatient departments, benefiting patients through lower co-payments and other expenses. We studied the influence of socioeconomic status and race on use of ASCs.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>From the 2005 State Ambulatory Surgery Database for Florida, a cohort of discharges for urologic, ophthalmologic, gastrointestinal, and orthopedic procedures was created. Socioeconomic status was established at the zip code level. Logistic regression models were fit to assess associations between socioeconomic status and ASC use.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Compared to the lowest group, patients of higher socioeconomic status were more likely to have procedures performed in ASCs (OR 1.07 CI 1.05, 1.09). Overall, the middle socioeconomic status group was the most likely group to use the ASC (OR 1.23, CI 1.21 to 1.25). For whites and blacks, higher status is associated with increased ASC use, but for Hispanics this relationship was reversed (OR 0.84 CI 0.78, 0.91).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Patients of lower socioeconomic status treated with outpatient surgery are significantly less likely to have their procedures in ASCs, suggesting that less resourced patients are encountering higher cost burdens for care. Thus, the most economically vulnerable group is unnecessarily subject to higher charges for surgery.</p
Bridgehead Modifications of Englerin A Reduce TRPC4 Activity and Intravenous Toxicity but not Cell Growth Inhibition
Modifications at the bridgehead position of englerin A were made to explore the effects of variation at this site on the molecule for biological activity, as judged by the NCI 60 screen, in which englerin A is highly potent and selective for renal cancer cells. Replacement of the isopropyl group by other, larger substituents yielded compounds which displayed excellent selectivity and potency comparable to the natural product. Selected compounds were also evaluated for their effect on the ion channel TRPC4 as well as for intravenous toxicity in mice, and these had lower potency in both assays compared to englerin A
