An Analytical Prediction of Consolidation Settlement of Fibrous Peat Deposit Under Loading

    Get PDF
In one-dimensional consolidation of fibrous peat, it is known that the behavior can not be sufficiently explained by Terzaghi theory. In this study, based on the fact that the pore of fibrous peat consists of macro (outer) pore between organic bodies and micro (inner) pore inside organic bodies, an approximate analytical method for one-dimensional consolidation of fibrous peat is presented. The macro pore consolidation (MAC) resulting from dewatering from the macro pore begins in the first place and the peat collapses to a new void ratio. At the same time, the micro pore consolidation (MIC) resulting from dewatering from the micro pore continuously starts to a final void ratio. The total settlement is given from the summing those by MAC and MIC. The proposed method is compared with field observational data and it is seen that the proposed model gives settlement result that follow quite closely the data

Efficient low-threshold lasers based on an erbium-doped holey fiber

We report experimental results on the continuous-wave lasers based on a small core erbium-doped holey fiber. In a simple Fabry-Perot-type cavity with high output coupling, we demonstrate low-threshold (0.55 mW) high slope-efficiency (57.3%) operation confirming both the quality and exceptionally high gain efficiency of the fiber. In an all-fiber ring cavity where the cavity loss is reduced, we show that it is possible to achieve a low-threshold laser with extremely wide tunability (>100 nm around 1550 nm). Our results illustrate some of the unique opportunities provided by active small core holey fibers

Respiration-dependent primary Na+ pump in halophilic marine bacterium, Alcaligenes strain 201

AbstractThe inverted membrane vesicles of marine bacterium Alcaligenes strain 201 generated inside positive membrane potential and accumulated Na+ on the energization with NADH. Both the generation of membrane potential and the accumulation of Na+ were resistant to a proton conductor, carbonyl cyanide m-chlorophenylhydrazone. Collapse of the membrane potential by valinomycin resulted in the stimulation of Na+ accumulation. It was concluded that Alcaligenes strain 201 possesses a respiratory Na+ pump which is analogous to that of Vibrio alginolyticus.Inverted vesicle; Na+ pump; Marine bacteria; Respiratory chai

Settlement Measurements of Peat Deposits as Embankment Foundation

A low test embankment have been constructed on a soft and fibrous peat deposits. The thickness of the soft peat layer is about 2.5 m. Under the peat layer, there is silty clay deposit with thickness of about 13m. The site investigations were performed for both the layers. The laboratory soil tests on undisturbed samples obtained from both the layers were carried out. The settlement of foundation deposits was predicted by the one dimensional consolidation theory using the soil parameters obtained from laboratory soil tests. The results of field observations were compared with the calculated results by the conventional theory. The results of observations and calculation do not agree. If the settlement of foundation deposits under embankment loading is predicted by a monitoring method, it appears that a lot of case records of settlement give the conclusion that the agreement of the prediction and the field observation is favourable
