Covariant N=2 heterotic string in four dimensions
We construct a covariant formulation of the heterotic superstring on K3 times
T^2 with manifest N=2 supersymmetry. We show how projective superspace appears
naturally in the hybrid formulation giving a (partially) geometric
interpretation of the harmonic parameter. The low-energy effective action for
this theory is given by a non-standard form of N=2 supergravity which is
intimately related to the N=1 old-minimal formulation. This formalism can be
used to derive new descriptions of interacting projective superspace field
theories using Berkovits' open string field theory and the the heterotic
Berkovits-Okawa-Zwiebach construction.Comment: 11+3 page
New extended superconformal sigma models and Quaternion Kahler manifolds
Quaternion Kahler manifolds are known to be the target spaces for matter
hypermultiplets coupled to N=2 supergravity. It is also known that there is a
one-to-one correspondence between 4n-dimensional quaternion Kahler manifolds
and those 4(n+1)-dimensional hyperkahler spaces which are the target spaces for
rigid superconformal hypermultiplets (such spaces are called hyperkahler
cones). In this paper we present a projective-superspace construction to
generate a hyperkahler cone M^{4(n+1)}_H of dimension 4(n+1) from a
2n-dimensional real analytic Kahler-Hodge manifold M^{2n}_K. The latter emerges
as a maximal Kahler submanifold of the 4n-dimensional quaternion Kahler space
M^{4n}_Q such that its Swann bundle coincides with M^{4(n+1)}_H. Our approach
should be useful for the explicit construction of new quaternion Kahler
metrics. The results obtained are also of interest, e.g., in the context of
supergravity reduction N=2 --> N=1, or alternatively from the point of view of
embedding N=1 matter-coupled supergravity into an N=2 theory.Comment: 30 page
Dark Energy Accretion onto black holes in a cosmic scenario
In this paper we study the accretion of dark energy onto a black hole in the
cases that dark energy is equipped with a positive cosmological constant and
when the space-time is described by a Schwarzschild-de Sitter metric. It is
shown that, if confronted with current observational data, the results derived
when no cosmological constant is present are once again obtained in both cases.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure
Twistors and Black Holes
Motivated by black hole physics in N=2, D=4 supergravity, we study the
geometry of quaternionic-Kahler manifolds M obtained by the c-map construction
from projective special Kahler manifolds M_s. Improving on earlier treatments,
we compute the Kahler potentials on the twistor space Z and Swann space S in
the complex coordinates adapted to the Heisenberg symmetries. The results bear
a simple relation to the Hesse potential \Sigma of the special Kahler manifold
M_s, and hence to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy for BPS black holes. We
explicitly construct the ``covariant c-map'' and the ``twistor map'', which
relate real coordinates on M x CP^1 (resp. M x R^4/Z_2) to complex coordinates
on Z (resp. S). As applications, we solve for the general BPS geodesic motion
on M, and provide explicit integral formulae for the quaternionic Penrose
transform relating elements of H^1(Z,O(-k)) to massless fields on M annihilated
by first or second order differential operators. Finally, we compute the exact
radial wave function (in the supergravity approximation) for BPS black holes
with fixed electric and magnetic charges.Comment: 47 pages, v2: typos corrected, reference added, v3: minor change
Human Health Risk Assessment For Arsenic: A Critical Review
Millions of people are exposed to arsenic resulting in a range of health implications. This paper provides an up-to-date review of the different sources of arsenic (water, soil and food), indicators of human exposure (biomarker assessment of hair, nail, urine and blood), epidemiological and toxicological studies on carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health outcomes, and risk assessment approaches. The review demonstrates a need for more work evaluating the risks of different arsenic species such as; arsenate, arsenite monomethylarsonic acid, monomethylarsonous acid, dimethylarsinic acid and dimethylarsinous acid as well as a need to better integrate the different exposure sources in risk assessments
Search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying into two photons in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV
A search for a Higgs boson decaying into two photons is described. The
analysis is performed using a dataset recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC
from pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, which corresponds to an
integrated luminosity of 4.8 inverse femtobarns. Limits are set on the cross
section of the standard model Higgs boson decaying to two photons. The expected
exclusion limit at 95% confidence level is between 1.4 and 2.4 times the
standard model cross section in the mass range between 110 and 150 GeV. The
analysis of the data excludes, at 95% confidence level, the standard model
Higgs boson decaying into two photons in the mass range 128 to 132 GeV. The
largest excess of events above the expected standard model background is
observed for a Higgs boson mass hypothesis of 124 GeV with a local significance
of 3.1 sigma. The global significance of observing an excess with a local
significance greater than 3.1 sigma anywhere in the search range 110-150 GeV is
estimated to be 1.8 sigma. More data are required to ascertain the origin of
this excess.Comment: Submitted to Physics Letters
Search for a W' boson decaying to a bottom quark and a top quark in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
Results are presented from a search for a W' boson using a dataset
corresponding to 5.0 inverse femtobarns of integrated luminosity collected
during 2011 by the CMS experiment at the LHC in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV.
The W' boson is modeled as a heavy W boson, but different scenarios for the
couplings to fermions are considered, involving both left-handed and
right-handed chiral projections of the fermions, as well as an arbitrary
mixture of the two. The search is performed in the decay channel W' to t b,
leading to a final state signature with a single lepton (e, mu), missing
transverse energy, and jets, at least one of which is tagged as a b-jet. A W'
boson that couples to fermions with the same coupling constant as the W, but to
the right-handed rather than left-handed chiral projections, is excluded for
masses below 1.85 TeV at the 95% confidence level. For the first time using LHC
data, constraints on the W' gauge coupling for a set of left- and right-handed
coupling combinations have been placed. These results represent a significant
improvement over previously published limits.Comment: Submitted to Physics Letters B. Replaced with version publishe
