The use of some non-minimal representations to improve the effectiveness of genetic algorithms
In the unitation representation used in genetic algorithms, the number of genotypes that map onto each phenotype varies greatly. This leads to an attractor in phenotype space which impairs the performance of the genetic algorithm. The attractor is illustrated theoretically and empirically. A new representation, called the length varying representation (LVR), allows unitation chromosomes of varying length (and hence with a variety of attractors) to coexist. Chromosomes whose lengths yield attractors close to optima come to dominate the population. The LVR is shown to be more effective than the unitation representation against a variety of fitness functions. However, the LVR preferentially converges towards the low end of phenotype space. The phenotype shift representation (PSR), which retains the ability of the LVR to select for attractors that are close to optima, whilst using a fixed length chromosome and thus avoiding the asymmetries inherent in the LVR, is defined. The PSR is more effective than the LVR and the results compare favourably with previously published results from eight other algorithms. The internal operation of the PSR is investigated. The PSR is extended to cover multi-dimensional problems.
The premise that improvements in performance may be attained by the insertion of introns, non-coding sequences affecting linkage, into traditional bit string chromosomes is investigated. In this investigation, using a population size of 50, there was no evidence of improvement in performance. However, the position of the optima relative to the hamming cliffs is shown to have a major effect on the performance of the genetic algorithm using the binary representation, and the inadequacy of the traditional crossover and mutation operators in this context is demonstrated. Also, the disallowance of duplicate population members was found to improve performance over the standard generational replacement strategy in all trials
Shipping in the north-east Atlantic : identifying spatial and temporal patterns of change
This work was supported by a faculty PhD bursary from the University of Portsmouth. Work was supported by the Marine Ecosystems Research Programme.Maritime traffic is increasing globally, with a four-fold increase in commercial vessel movements between 1992 and 2012. Vessels contribute to noise and air pollution, provide pathways for non-native species, and collide with marine wildlife. While knowledge of shipping trends and potential environmental impacts exists at both local and global levels, key information on vessel density for regional-scale management is lacking. This study presents the first in-depth spatio-temporal analysis of shipping in the north-east Atlantic region, over three years in a five-year period. Densities increased by 34%, including in 73% of Marine Protected Areas. Western Scotland and the Bay of Biscay experienced the largest increases in vessel density, predominantly from small and slow vessels. Given well-documented impacts that shipping can have on the marine environment, it is crucial that this situation continues to be monitored â particularly in areas designated to protect vulnerable species and ecosystems which may already be under pressure.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

No Plan B: the Achilles heel of high performance sport management
Research question: The severity and immediacy of funding cuts to UK National Governing Bodies of Sport (NGBs), driven by the âNo Compromiseâ policy framework for Olympic funding, triggers a cyclical need for turnaround management. Adept strategies during times of considerable challenge is stark, yet literature investigating turnaround management within NGBs remains limited. Consequently, this paper examines two questions: how do NGBs respond to UK Sport funding cuts and how are their responses enabled or restricted by their organisational context?
Research methods: A case study methodology was used to develop in-depth insights into how three NGBs responded over a twelve-month period of turnaround management. This was informed by 21 semi-structured interviews with chief executives/presidents, performance managers/head coaches and elite athletes. The actions of the NGBs were analysed through a thematic analysis that made use of Boyneâs (2004) 3 Rs of turnaround strategy.
Results and findings: The results highlight that NGBsâ turnaround strategies were constrained by extreme funding dependency and a prohibitive institutional environment that led to states of flux and a focus on short-term operational survival. As a result, the measures taken undermined future success.
Implications: An embedded feature of the âNo Compromiseâ framework is severe funding cuts. This should be a significant theme in NGB strategy development. The evidence of this study is that NGBs do not prepare, nor react strategically, when faced with the prospect (or fact of) severe cuts. Consequently, the cases of turnaround management in this study signal the urgent need for further research into the impact of the âNo Compromiseâ framework on the management of NGBs

The genetic architecture of the human cerebral cortex
The cerebral cortex underlies our complex cognitive capabilities, yet little is known about the specific genetic loci that influence human cortical structure. To identify genetic variants that affect cortical structure, we conducted a genome-wide association meta-analysis of brain magnetic resonance imaging data from 51,665 individuals. We analyzed the surface area and average thickness of the whole cortex and 34 regions with known functional specializations. We identified 199 significant loci and found significant enrichment for loci influencing total surface area within regulatory elements that are active during prenatal cortical development, supporting the radial unit hypothesis. Loci that affect regional surface area cluster near genes in Wnt signaling pathways, which influence progenitor expansion and areal identity. Variation in cortical structure is genetically correlated with cognitive function, Parkinson's disease, insomnia, depression, neuroticism, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder
The 13th Southern Hemisphere Conference on the Teaching and Learning of Undergraduate Mathematics and Statistics
NgÄ mihi aroha ki ngÄ tangata katoa and warm greetings to you all. Welcome to Herenga
Delta 2021, the Thirteenth Southern Hemisphere Conference on the Teaching and Learning
of Undergraduate Mathematics and Statistics.
It has been ten years since the Volcanic Delta Conference in Rotorua, and we are excited to
have the Delta community return to Aotearoa New Zealand, if not in person, then by virtual
means. Although the limits imposed by the pandemic mean that most of this yearâs 2021
participants are unable to set foot in TÄmaki Makaurau Auckland, this has certainly not
stopped interest in this event. Participants have been invited to draw on the concept of
herenga, in Te Reo MÄori usually a mooring place where people from afar come to share
their knowledge and experiences. Although many of the participants are still some distance
away, the submissions that have been sent in will continue to stimulate discussion on
mathematics and statistics undergraduate education in the Delta tradition.
The conference invited papers, abstracts and posters, working within the initial themes of
Values and Variables. The range of submissions is diverse, and will provide participants with
many opportunities to engage, discuss, and network with colleagues across the Delta
community. The publications for this thirteenth Delta Conference include publications in the
International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, iJMEST,
(available at https://www.tandfonline.com/journals/tmes20/collections/Herenga-Delta-2021),
the Conference Proceedings, and the Programme (which has created some interesting
challenges around time-zones), by the Local Organizing Committee. Papers in the iJMEST
issue and the Proceedings were peer reviewed by at least two reviewers per paper. Of the
ten submissions to the Proceedings, three were accepted.
We are pleased to now be at the business end of the conference and hope that this event will
carry on the special atmosphere of the many Deltas which have preceded this one. We hope
that you will enjoy this conference, the virtual and social experiences that accompany it, and
take the opportunity to contribute to further enhancing mathematics and statistics
undergraduate education.
