Future of Thailand's captive elephants: commentary on Baker & Winkler on elephant rewilding
Removal from natural habitat and commodification as private property compromise elephants’ broader societal value. Although we support Baker & Winkler’s (2020) plea for a new community-based rewilding conservation model focused on mahout culture, we recommend an expanded co-management approach to complement and enhance the regional elephant conservation strategy with additional local community stakeholders and the potential to extend across international borders into suitable elephant habitat. Holistic co-management approaches improve human wellbeing and social cohesion, as well as elephant wellbeing, thereby better securing long-term survival of Asian elephants, environmental justice, and overall sustainability
Digital Connections: Student Experiences in Online Language Exchanges
Exciting advances in technology have provided foreign language teachers with opportunities to connect students to native speakers of target languages. Much of the research in this area focuses on changes in proficiency or cultural sensitivity. Although valuable, the research is lacking in understanding students’ experiences online, including positive and negative feelings, challenges, as well as students’ overall opinions of the exchanges’ usefulness for learning. The present study used a mixed methods approach to examine the experiences of third-semester university students participating in online language exchanges with native speakers. A third-semester Spanish class at a large university consisting of 18 students was selected as a sample. Students were required to speak online with native Spanish speakers in the target language for 20 minutes each week. Students completed weekly surveys and a final survey, and three students were selected for semi-structured interviews. The data reveal common struggles that students face during online exchanges, methods students use for coping with these difficulties, areas of perceived growth, and social factors that affect students’ experiences. The article concludes with recommendations for what foreign language educators can do to support students in similar online exchanges
A Roadmap for Integrating Neuroscience into Addiction Treatment:A Consensus of the Neuroscience Interest Group of the International Society of Addiction Medicine
Although there is general consensus that altered brain structure and function underpins addictive disorders, clinicians working in addiction treatment rarely incorporate neuroscience-informed approaches into their practice. We recently launched the Neuroscience Interest Group within the International Society of Addiction Medicine (ISAMNIG) to promote initiatives to bridge this gap. This article summarises the ISAM-NIG key priorities and strategies to achieve implementation of addiction neuroscience knowledge and tools forthe assessment and treatment of substance use disorders. We cover two assessment areas: cognitive assessment and neuroimaging, and two interventional areas: cognitive training/remediation and neuromodulation, where we identify key challenges and proposed solutions. We reason that incorporating cognitive assessment into clinical settings requires the identification of constructs that predict meaningful clinical outcomes. Other requirements are the development of measures that are easily-administered, reliable and ecologically-valid. Translation of neuroimaging techniques requires the development of diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers and testing the cost-effectiveness of these biomarkers in individualised prediction algorithms for relapse prevention and treatment selection. Integration of cognitive assessments with neuroimaging can provide multilevel targets including neural, cognitive, and behavioural outcomes for neuroscience-informed interventions. Application of neuroscience-informed interventions including cognitive training/remediation and neuromodulation requires clear pathways to design interventions based on multilevel targets, additional evidence from randomised trials and subsequent clinical implementation, including evaluation of cost-effectiveness. We propose to address these challenges by promoting international collaboration between researchers and clinicians, developing harmonised protocols and data management systems, and prioritising multi-site research that focuses on improving clinical outcomes
Explicit kinetic heterogeneity: mechanistic models for interpretation of labeling data of heterogeneous cell populations
Estimation of division and death rates of lymphocytes in different conditions
is vital for quantitative understanding of the immune system. Deuterium, in the
form of deuterated glucose or heavy water, can be used to measure rates of
proliferation and death of lymphocytes in vivo. Inferring these rates from
labeling and delabeling curves has been subject to considerable debate with
different groups suggesting different mathematical models for that purpose. We
show that the three models that are most commonly used are in fact
mathematically identical and differ only in their interpretation of the
estimated parameters. By extending these previous models, we here propose a
more mechanistic approach for the analysis of data from deuterium labeling
experiments. We construct a model of "kinetic heterogeneity" in which the total
cell population consists of many sub-populations with different rates of cell
turnover. In this model, for a given distribution of the rates of turnover, the
predicted fraction of labeled DNA accumulated and lost can be calculated. Our
model reproduces several previously made experimental observations, such as a
negative correlation between the length of the labeling period and the rate at
which labeled DNA is lost after label cessation. We demonstrate the reliability
of the new explicit kinetic heterogeneity model by applying it to artificially
generated datasets, and illustrate its usefulness by fitting experimental data.
In contrast to previous models, the explicit kinetic heterogeneity model 1)
provides a mechanistic way of interpreting labeling data; 2) allows for a
non-exponential loss of labeled cells during delabeling, and 3) can be used to
describe data with variable labeling length

Severe anemia in Malawian children
Background Severe anemia is a major cause of sickness and death in African children, yet the causes of anemia in this population have been inadequately studied. Methods We conducted a case-control study of 381 preschool children with severe anemia (hemoglobin concentration, <5.0 g per deciliter) and 757 preschool children without severe anemia in urban and rural settings in Malawi. Causal factors previously associated with severe anemia were studied. The data were examined by multivariate analysis and structural equation modeling. Results Bacteremia (adjusted odds ratio, 5.3; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.6 to 10.9), malaria (adjusted odds ratio, 2.3; 95% CI, 1.6 to 3.3), hookworm (adjusted odds ratio, 4.8; 95% CI, 2.0 to 11.8), human immunodeficiency virus infection (adjusted odds ratio, 2.0; 95% CI, 1.0 to 3.8), the G6PD(sup -202/-376) genetic disorder (adjusted odds ratio, 2.4; 95% CI, 1.3 to 4.4), vitamin A deficiency (adjusted odds ratio, 2.8; 95% CI, 1.3 to 5.8), and vitamin B(sub 12) deficiency (adjusted odds ratio, 2.2; 95% CI, 1.4 to 3.6) were associated with severe anemia. Folate deficiency, sickle cell disease, and laboratory signs of an abnormal inflammatory response were uncommon. Iron deficiency was not prevalent in case patients (adjusted odds ratio, 0.37; 95% CI, 0.22 to 0.60) and was negatively associated with bacteremia. Malaria was associated with severe anemia in the urban site (with seasonal transmission) but not in the rural site (where malaria was holoendemic). Seventy-six percent of hookworm infections were found in children under 2 years of age. Conclusions There are multiple causes of severe anemia in Malawian preschool children, but folate and iron deficiencies are not prominent among them. The teacher educator experience: “Guardians of the Pedagogy”?
This chapter adopts an auto-ethnographic approach, focusing on teacher educators’ practice on in-service Initial Teacher Education (ITE) courses across a Partnership based in the West Midlands of England. It explores some of the issues faced by these HE in FE teacher educators through the lens of ‘vocation’. After an initial section to contextualise ITE for college teachers, the chapter will contrast the current model with teacher preparation in the Community College, Technical Career sector and at senior high school level in the US. While there are some similarities in terms of the policy discourse (in both countries highly critical of teacher ‘quality’), there are major differences particularly in certification for teaching students aged 16+. The terrain of teacher education in England – strewn with the remnants of multiple ‘legacy’ qualifications is discussed, as are the implications of the Lingfield Review for the professional identities of teachers in further education. The chapter will draw on literature about the impact of market regulators in education in then focuses on a range of issues that are impacting on the work of FE teacher educators, not least the tensions experienced by them in upholding a set of pedagogical values that do not always harmonise with the culture of their workplaces. The chapter introduces the notion of the gulf that exists between the student teacher learning environment and the student teacher practice environment and explores the sectoral and policy pressures that this originates in. The work of these practitioners it discussed as they mediate their students’ early experiences as teachers, focusing on the steps they take to guard their students’ individuality and creativity against and the negative experiences they encounter on teaching placement
The Fourteenth Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey: First Spectroscopic Data from the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey and from the second phase of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment
The fourth generation of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-IV) has been in
operation since July 2014. This paper describes the second data release from
this phase, and the fourteenth from SDSS overall (making this, Data Release
Fourteen or DR14). This release makes public data taken by SDSS-IV in its first
two years of operation (July 2014-2016). Like all previous SDSS releases, DR14
is cumulative, including the most recent reductions and calibrations of all
data taken by SDSS since the first phase began operations in 2000. New in DR14
is the first public release of data from the extended Baryon Oscillation
Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS); the first data from the second phase of the
Apache Point Observatory (APO) Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE-2),
including stellar parameter estimates from an innovative data driven machine
learning algorithm known as "The Cannon"; and almost twice as many data cubes
from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA) survey as were in the previous
release (N = 2812 in total). This paper describes the location and format of
the publicly available data from SDSS-IV surveys. We provide references to the
important technical papers describing how these data have been taken (both
targeting and observation details) and processed for scientific use. The SDSS
website (www.sdss.org) has been updated for this release, and provides links to
data downloads, as well as tutorials and examples of data use. SDSS-IV is
planning to continue to collect astronomical data until 2020, and will be

Crossing kingdoms:How can art open up new ways of thinking about science?
“Crossing Kingdoms” is an artist-led experiment in the biological fusion of mammalian and yeast cells and the cultural discussions of these phenomena. We present this collaboration as an experiment in responsible research and innovation (RRI), an institutionalized format for ensuring that researchers reflect on the wider social dimensions of their work. Our methods challenged us as researchers to reflect on interdisciplinary collaboration and the possibility of innovating in biology for artistic purposes, challenged audiences to reflect on biological boundaries, and challenged both groups to reflect on what it means to be responsible in science. We conclude that our experiment in RRI was successful because we have asked unexpected questions—a contrast to RRI implemented as a standard protocol. Our experiment has implications for biologists and artists pursuing interdisciplinary collaborations with each other and for researchers thinking about implementing RRI as more than a box-ticking exercise
