Two-tiered reconstruction of Late Pleistocene to Holocene changes in the freezing level height in the largest glacierized areas of the Colombian Andes
One way of deducing vertical shifts in the altitudinal distribution of Colombian high-altitude páramo environments is by inferring fluctuations in the height of the local freezing level. In our research, we are implementing two complementary approaches to reconstruct Late Pleistocene to Holocene changes in the freezing level height (FLH) in two of the most extensively glacier-covered areas of the northern Andes. We combined remote sensing and field-based geomorphological mapping with time-series reconstruction of changes in the altitude of the 0°C isotherm. Changes in the FLH were based on already-published ∼30 kyr paleo-reconstructions of sea surface temperatures (SSTs) of the eastern tropical Pacific and the western tropical Atlantic, as well as on reconstructed long-term sea level changes and empirical orthogonal functions of present-day (historical) Indo-Pacific and tropical Atlantic SST anomalies. We also analyzed the probability distribution of air-sea temperature differences and the spatial distribution of grid points with SSTs above the minimum threshold necessary to initiate deep convection. We considered available historical near-surface and free air temperature data of ERA-Interim reanalysis products, General Circulation Model (GCM) simulations, weather stations, and (deployed by our group) digital sensors, to assess the normal Environmental Lapse Rates (ELRs) at the regional to local scale. The combined maps of glacial landforms and our reconstructed FLHs provided us with a well-founded inference of potential past glacier advances, narrowing down the coarse resolution of ice margins suggested by previous research efforts. The extent of the areas with temperatures below the freezing point suggested here for the summits of our main study site exceeds in magnitude the corresponding glacier icecaps and front advances proposed by previous studies. Conversely, our average lowest altitudes of the FLH for our comparative site are consistently above the main glacier-front advances previously suggested. Our results indicate that, compared to the maximum upward changes that likely took place over the past ca. observed (present-day) upward shifts of the FLH have occurred at a rate that significantly surpasses our inferred rates. Our study helps fill the gaps in understanding past climatic changes and present trends in the region of interest and provides some insights into analyzing the signals of natural and anthropogenic climate change
[EN] The emergence of social networks has not just had a great impact in the way companies promote their products and services, but also in the decision-making process of consumers regarding their purchases. Using the application and extension of the models proposed by Okazaki et al. (2012), the present study tries to understand the factors that motivate the use of social networks in the purchase decisions of young university students, for this a self-administered questionnaires were applied to 224 university students. Some limitations were found at the time of evaluating the adjustment of the model through a structural equations method, due to the number of indicators per construct. However, the results show that the proposed model presents a good adjustment. Therefore, it can be concluded that the study develops an appropriate approach to the knowledge of the factors that can influence university students, who intend to use social networks to buy, validating the conclusions drawn by Okazaki et al. (2012) in their study. At last, it is recommended for companies that wish to promote their products through social networks to look out for strategies that combine information transparency and stimulation of word-of-mouth communication among users, generating a larger impact on the purchase decisions of clients.[ES] El auge de las redes sociales no solo ha tenido un alto impacto en la manera como las empresas promocionan sus productos y servicios, sino también en la toma de decisiones de los consumidores en cuanto a sus compras.
What to do when I am sick? Women displaced by violence and their search for well-being alternatives in Medellin 2013-2014
ABSTRACT: To recognize the experiences derived from the search for healthcare alternatives performed by women who have been displaced by violence and currently live in three settlements in Medellin, Colombia, during 2013-2014. Methodology: a qualitative research was conducted using grounded theory. Two types of sources were taken into account: primary sources were the discourses collected via interviews with women who have been displaced by violence and who lived in one of three settlements in Medellin at the time of this study. These interviews were applied personally and the women were culturally, ethnically and idiosyncratically diverse. The secondary sources were obtained by reviewing official documents, literature, other studies and additional material on this issue. Data were collected through semistructured interviews, focus groups and in- depth interviews. Results and Discussion: when feeling ill, women displaced by violence use traditional medicine as the first alternative to satisfy their health needs. If this is not successful, other important alternatives such as healthcare services are then used to regain well-being. When feeling healthy, these women try to keep interacting with these alternatives in order to ensure that their current health status does not change. Conclusions: women displaced by violence perceive health and illness in a way that allows them to interact with different alternatives for the preservation or recovery of their health status.RESUMEN: Reconocer los diferentes significados de las experiencias de las mujeres desplazadas en relación con la percepción de su estado de salud y cómo este influye en la búsqueda y el uso de servicios de salud o medicina tradicional, para los años 2013-2014.
ABSTRACT The geological, geophysical and geochemical data pertaining the previously known as Choco Basin, was compiled and reinterpreted. Today, two distinc Cenozoic basins, the Atrato Basin and the San Juan Basin are identifed, each with its own geological history. They are bounded by the Istmina-Condoto Structural High, in fact, a paleo-high which intermitently acts as sedimentary barrier, i.e. source area.In the San Juan Delta Basin up to 9 km (?) of mainly clastic sediments were deposited, most probably since Paleocene time. In the Atrato Fore Arc Basin a 10 km thickness of Cenozoic sediments were seismically recorded. Both basins are suffciently structured, as to produce potential hydrocarbon traps, mainly post-Miocene in age. The tecto-sedimentary framework in the San Juan Basin is controlled by the Istmina-Condoto Fault System in the NW and the Garrapatas Fault System in the SE. In the Atrato Basin the occurrence of growth faults is an outstanding feature. Key words: Atrato Basin, San Juan Basin, Chocó Basin, Panamá-Chocó arch, tectonic evolution.

Evaluation of the chemical-enzymatic decellularization method for obtaining extracellular trachea matrixes in a porcine model
Tissue engineering
may be a therapeutic alternative for patients with such diseases, using decellularized trachea matrixes seeded with cells from the recipient, which do not generate immune response and may even prevent rejection of zoo-transplants. Objective: To evaluate a decellularization method to obtain tracheal extracellular matrixes in the porcine model. Materials and methods: Two study groups, treated and control, were obtained from 5 porcine tracheas. A chemical-enzymatic method for decellularization was used. Histological analyses were performed with hematoxylin-eosin, Masson’s trichromic stain and safranin O. Biomechanical properties of both groups were evaluated by determining the Young modulus, maximum strength and deformation rate. Results: Compared to the controls, there was a 66 % decrease in the cell content in the treated specimens. Collagen was preserved and a reduction of glycosaminoglycans was detected. Biomechanical tests revealed a significant difference in the percentage of deformation, with no alteration of the remaining parameters. Conclusions: The evaluated decellularization method proved to be efficient to reduce the cellular content of
porcine tracheas, with a considerable decrease in cost and production time. These advantages could make
it a good option for the socio-economic Colombian conditions
Synthesis, characterization and photocatalytic evaluation of ZrO2-SiO2 systems

properties of the initial system, as well as modifications in the electronic structure of the material. In fact, the
recombination of charge carriers in a semiconductor material is modified by the incorporation of another element to the semiconductor network. In particular, the structural, morphological, superficial and catalytic properties of the zircon oxide are affected when it is deposited on another that acts as a support matrix. In the present work, the mixed oxides ZrO2-SiO2 have been prepared using the sol gel method of precipitation followed by diverse thermal treatments. So obtained materials were characterized by diverse techniques and also were tested their photocatalytic activity for the degradation of 3-nitrophenol. Although the photocatalytic behavior of the system ZrO2-SiO2 is not different from the one that exhibits the simple oxides ZrO2 and SiO2, the properties of these mixed oxides strongly depend on the preparation methods and the calcination treatments.

Antimicrobial resistance among migrants in Europe: a systematic review and meta-analysis
BACKGROUND: Rates of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) are rising globally and there is concern that increased migration is contributing to the burden of antibiotic resistance in Europe. However, the effect of migration on the burden of AMR in Europe has not yet been comprehensively examined. Therefore, we did a systematic review and meta-analysis to identify and synthesise data for AMR carriage or infection in migrants to Europe to examine differences in patterns of AMR across migrant groups and in different settings. METHODS: For this systematic review and meta-analysis, we searched MEDLINE, Embase, PubMed, and Scopus with no language restrictions from Jan 1, 2000, to Jan 18, 2017, for primary data from observational studies reporting antibacterial resistance in common bacterial pathogens among migrants to 21 European Union-15 and European Economic Area countries. To be eligible for inclusion, studies had to report data on carriage or infection with laboratory-confirmed antibiotic-resistant organisms in migrant populations. We extracted data from eligible studies and assessed quality using piloted, standardised forms. We did not examine drug resistance in tuberculosis and excluded articles solely reporting on this parameter. We also excluded articles in which migrant status was determined by ethnicity, country of birth of participants' parents, or was not defined, and articles in which data were not disaggregated by migrant status. Outcomes were carriage of or infection with antibiotic-resistant organisms. We used random-effects models to calculate the pooled prevalence of each outcome. The study protocol is registered with PROSPERO, number CRD42016043681. FINDINGS: We identified 2274 articles, of which 23 observational studies reporting on antibiotic resistance in 2319 migrants were included. The pooled prevalence of any AMR carriage or AMR infection in migrants was 25·4% (95% CI 19·1-31·8; I2 =98%), including meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (7·8%, 4·8-10·7; I2 =92%) and antibiotic-resistant Gram-negative bacteria (27·2%, 17·6-36·8; I2 =94%). The pooled prevalence of any AMR carriage or infection was higher in refugees and asylum seekers (33·0%, 18·3-47·6; I2 =98%) than in other migrant groups (6·6%, 1·8-11·3; I2 =92%). The pooled prevalence of antibiotic-resistant organisms was slightly higher in high-migrant community settings (33·1%, 11·1-55·1; I2 =96%) than in migrants in hospitals (24·3%, 16·1-32·6; I2 =98%). We did not find evidence of high rates of transmission of AMR from migrant to host populations. INTERPRETATION: Migrants are exposed to conditions favouring the emergence of drug resistance during transit and in host countries in Europe. Increased antibiotic resistance among refugees and asylum seekers and in high-migrant community settings (such as refugee camps and detention facilities) highlights the need for improved living conditions, access to health care, and initiatives to facilitate detection of and appropriate high-quality treatment for antibiotic-resistant infections during transit and in host countries. Protocols for the prevention and control of infection and for antibiotic surveillance need to be integrated in all aspects of health care, which should be accessible for all migrant groups, and should target determinants of AMR before, during, and after migration.
