The use of video-based reflection to facilitate pre-service English teachers’ self-reflection

    Get PDF
As self-reflection is crucial for improving the professional identity of pre-service teachers, it is paramount to discover ways that may assist them to reflect more effectively. This study investigates how self-reflection may be enhanced by the use of video recording as compared to that which is facilitated only by students’ memories. Employing a descriptive qualitative analysis method, the research uses reflection journals and interviews from pre-service English teachers of two available microteaching classes of an English language education program in an Indonesian private university in Central Java. While the students in one class used video recording to help them reflect, those in the other class relied on memory. The findings showed that the reflections supported by video recording were more specific and more analytical, focusing more attention on management-related issues of the teaching. Those from the memory-based group, on the other hand, tended to be general and descriptive with more accounts on personal feelings

Optimization of a 42.7 Gb/s wavelength tunable RZ transmitter using a linear spectrogram technique

The optimization of a wavelength tunable RZ transmitter, consisting of an electro-absorption modulator and a SG DBR tunable laser, is carried out using a linear spectrogram based characterization and leads to 1500 km transmission at 42.7 Gb/s independent of the operating wavelength. We demonstrate that, to ensure optimum and consistent transmission performance over a portion of the C-band, the RF drive and bias conditions of the EAM must be varied at each wavelength. The sign and magnitude of the pulse chirp (characterized using the linear spectrographic technique) is therefore tailored to suit the dispersion map of the transmission link. Results achieved show that by optimizing the drive and DC bias applied to the EAM, consistent transmission performance can be achieved over a wide wavelength range. Failure to optimize the EAM drive conditions at each wavelength can lead to serious degradation in system performance

We report on high-speed > 25 Gbit/s LiFi (Light Fidelity) communication systems deploying Semipolar GaN laser diode (LD) based single and dual wavelength emission, eye-safe, white light illumination light sources in collimated beam and fiber delivered configurations. Additionally, we report on recent demonstrations of high power Semipolar GaN violet LDs with similar properties to blue LDs described here which have potential for LiFi communications and anti-bacterial optical illuminatio

Wedemonstrate a high-speed light fidelity (LiFi) communication system deploying ultra-high brightness laser-based white light illumination sources in a surface mount device (SMD) packaging platform. The LiFi transmitter SMD source provides 450 lumens of white light output with a brightness of 1000 cd/mm2 in a dual wavelength configuration comprising blue and infrared (IR) emitting laser diodes within the SMD. First, we present high-speed data transmission beyond 25 Gbit/s over a 3 meter channel distance with the combined data rates from the blue and IR lasers in the single SMD. Next, we present a 2.8 Gbit/s data rate with the dual wavelength laser SMD light source using a side-emissive fiber as the transmitter. This work proves the viability of LiFi systems deploying laser-based white light sources operating at very high data rates with the visible light and communication signal delivered in conventional free-space transmission architectures along with novel configurations using side-emitting fibers

A perspective on SIDS pathogenesis. The hypotheses: plausibility and evidence

    Get PDF
Several theories of the underlying mechanisms of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) have been proposed. These theories have born relatively narrow beach-head research programs attracting generous research funding sustained for many years at expense to the public purse. This perspective endeavors to critically examine the evidence and bases of these theories and determine their plausibility; and questions whether or not a safe and reasoned hypothesis lies at their foundation. The Opinion sets specific criteria by asking the following questions: 1. Does the hypothesis take into account the key pathological findings in SIDS? 2. Is the hypothesis congruent with the key epidemiological risk factors? 3. Does it link 1 and 2? Falling short of any one of these answers, by inference, would imply insufficient grounds for a sustainable hypothesis. Some of the hypotheses overlap, for instance, notional respiratory failure may encompass apnea, prone sleep position, and asphyxia which may be seen to be linked to co-sleeping. For the purposes of this paper, each element will be assessed on the above criteria
