Enhanced Inter-Cell Interference Coordination Challenges in Heterogeneous Networks
3GPP LTE-Advanced has started a new study item to investigate Heterogeneous
Network (HetNet) deployments as a cost effective way to deal with the
unrelenting traffic demand. HetNets consist of a mix of macrocells, remote
radio heads, and low-power nodes such as picocells, femtocells, and relays.
Leveraging network topology, increasing the proximity between the access
network and the end-users, has the potential to provide the next significant
performance leap in wireless networks, improving spatial spectrum reuse and
enhancing indoor coverage. Nevertheless, deployment of a large number of small
cells overlaying the macrocells is not without new technical challenges. In
this article, we present the concept of heterogeneous networks and also
describe the major technical challenges associated with such network
architecture. We focus in particular on the standardization activities within
the 3GPP related to enhanced inter-cell interference coordination.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, 2 table
Influence of shear stress applied during flow stoppage and rest period on the mechanical properties of thixotropic suspensions
We study the solid mechanical properties of several thixotropic suspensions
as a function of the shear stress history applied during their flow stoppage
and their aging in their solid state. We show that their elastic modulus and
yield stress depend strongly on the shear stress applied during their
solid-liquid transition (i.e., during flow stoppage) while applying the same
stress only before or only after this transition may induce only second-order
effects: there is negligible dependence of the mechanical properties on the
preshear history and on the shear stress applied at rest. We also found that
the suspensions age with a structuration rate that hardly depends on the stress
history. We propose a physical sketch based on the freezing of a microstructure
whose anisotropy depends on the stress applied during the liquid-solid
transition to explain why the mechanical properties depend strongly on this
stress. This sketch points out the role of the internal forces in the colloidal
suspensions' behavior. We finally discuss briefly the macroscopic consequences
of this phenomenon and show the importance of using a controlled-stress
rheometer
Investigating the influence of (Deoxy)fluorination on the lipophilicity of non-UV-active fluorinated alkanols and carbohydrates by a new log P determination method
Property tuning by fluorination is very effective for a number of purposes, and currently increasingly investigated for aliphatic compounds. An important application is lipophilicity (log?P) modulation. However, the determination of log?P is cumbersome for non-UV-active compounds. A new variation of the shake-flask log?P determination method is presented, enabling the measurement of log?P for fluorinated compounds with or without UV activity regardless of whether they are hydrophilic or lipophilic. No calibration curves or measurements of compound masses/aliquot volumes are required. With this method, the influence of fluorination on the lipophilicity of fluorinated aliphatic alcohols was determined, and the log?P values of fluorinated carbohydrates were measured. Interesting trends and changes, for example, for the dependence on relative stereochemistry, are reporte
Overtones of interlayer shear modes in the phonon-assisted emission spectrum of hexagonal boron nitride
We address the intrinsic optical properties of hexagonal boron nitride in deep ultraviolet. We show that the fine structure of the phonon replicas arises from overtones involving up to six low-energy interlayer shear modes. These lattice vibrations are specific to layered compounds since they correspond to the shear rigid motion between adjacent layers, with a characteristic energy of about 6-7 meV. We obtain a quantitative interpretation of the multiplet observed in each phonon replica under the assumption of a cumulative Gaussian broadening as a function of the overtone index, and with a phenomenological line broadening taken identical for all phonon types. We show from our quantitative interpretation of the full emission spectrum above 5.7 eV that the energy of the involved phonon mode is 6.8±0.5 meV, in excellent agreement with temperature-dependent Raman measurements of the low-energy interlayer shear mode in hexagonal boron nitride. We highlight the unusual properties of this material where the optical response is tailored by the phonon group velocities in the middle of the Brillouin zone. © 2017 American Physical Society.Peer reviewe
High Dimensional Apollonian Networks
We propose a simple algorithm which produces high dimensional Apollonian
networks with both small-world and scale-free characteristics. We derive
analytical expressions for the degree distribution, the clustering coefficient
and the diameter of the networks, which are determined by their dimension
Emulating opportunistic networks with KauNet Triggers
In opportunistic networks the availability of an end-to-end path is no longer required. Instead opportunistic networks may take advantage of temporary connectivity opportunities.
Opportunistic networks present a demanding environment for network emulation as the traditional emulation setup, where application/transport endpoints only send and receive packets from the network following a black box approach,
is no longer applicable. Opportunistic networking protocols
and applications additionally need to react to the dynamics of the underlying network beyond what is conveyed through the exchange of packets.
In order to support IP-level emulation evaluations of applications and protocols that react to lower layer events, we have proposed the use of emulation triggers. Emulation triggers can emulate arbitrary cross-layer feedback and can be synchronized with other emulation effects. After introducing the design and implementation of
triggers in the KauNet emulator, we describe the integration of triggers with the DTN2 reference implementation and illustrate how the functionality can be used to emulate a classical DTN data-mule scenario
Blueprint for a Scalable Photonic Fault-Tolerant Quantum Computer
Photonics is the platform of choice to build a modular, easy-to-network
quantum computer operating at room temperature. However, no concrete
architecture has been presented so far that exploits both the advantages of
qubits encoded into states of light and the modern tools for their generation.
Here we propose such a design for a scalable and fault-tolerant photonic
quantum computer informed by the latest developments in theory and technology.
Central to our architecture is the generation and manipulation of
three-dimensional hybrid resource states comprising both bosonic qubits and
squeezed vacuum states. The proposal enables exploiting state-of-the-art
procedures for the non-deterministic generation of bosonic qubits combined with
the strengths of continuous-variable quantum computation, namely the
implementation of Clifford gates using easy-to-generate squeezed states.
Moreover, the architecture is based on two-dimensional integrated photonic
chips used to produce a qubit cluster state in one temporal and two spatial
dimensions. By reducing the experimental challenges as compared to existing
architectures and by enabling room-temperature quantum computation, our design
opens the door to scalable fabrication and operation, which may allow photonics
to leap-frog other platforms on the path to a quantum computer with millions of
qubits.Comment: 38 pages, many figures. Comments welcom
Quasi-molecular and atomic phases of dense solid hydrogen
The high-pressure phases of solid hydrogen are of fundamental interest and
relevant to the interior of giant planets; however, knowledge of these phases
is far from complete. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) techniques were applied
to a structural search, yielding hitherto unexpected high-pressure phases of
solid hydrogen at pressures up to 5 TPa. An exotic quasi-molecular mC24
structure (space group C2/c, stable at 0.47-0.59 TPa) with two types of
intramolecular bonds was predicted, providing a deeper understanding of
molecular dissociation in solid hydrogen, which has been a mystery for decades.
We further predicted the existence of two atomic phases: (i) the oC12 structure
(space group Cmcm, stable at > 2.1 TPa), consisting of planar H3 clusters, and
(ii) the cI16 structure, previously observed in lithium and sodium, stable
above 3.5 TPa upon consideration of the zero-point energy. This work clearly
revised the known zero-temperature and high-pressure (>0.47 TPa) phase diagram
for solid hydrogen and has implications for the constituent structures of giant
planets.Comment: accepted in The Journal of Physical Chemistr
Mistral 7B
We introduce Mistral 7B v0.1, a 7-billion-parameter language model engineered
for superior performance and efficiency. Mistral 7B outperforms Llama 2 13B
across all evaluated benchmarks, and Llama 1 34B in reasoning, mathematics, and
code generation. Our model leverages grouped-query attention (GQA) for faster
inference, coupled with sliding window attention (SWA) to effectively handle
sequences of arbitrary length with a reduced inference cost. We also provide a
model fine-tuned to follow instructions, Mistral 7B -- Instruct, that surpasses
the Llama 2 13B -- Chat model both on human and automated benchmarks. Our
models are released under the Apache 2.0 license.Comment: Models and code are available at

Web-based monitoring tools for Resistive Plate Chambers in the CMS experiment at CERN
The Resistive Plate Chambers (RPC) are used in the CMS experiment at the trigger level and also in the standard offline muon reconstruction. In order to guarantee the quality of the data collected and to monitor online the detector performance, a set of tools has been developed in CMS which is heavily used in the RPC system. The Web-based monitoring (WBM) is a set of java servlets that allows users to check the performance of the hardware during data taking, providing distributions and history plots of all the parameters. The functionalities of the RPC WBM monitoring tools are presented along with studies of the detector performance as a function of growing luminosity and environmental conditions that are tracked over time
