Infection Control Practices among Undergraduate Dental Students: Case of a Private Dental Institution in North India
Objective: Transmission of infectious agents in a dental clinic is unavoidable. A considerable emphasis must be placed on observing a strict protocol for infection control. The present study assesses infection control practices undertaken by undergraduate dental students in a dental college in North India.Materials and Methods: Along with the general information (age, gender and year of study), a self-applied questionnaire (15 questions with dichotomous response of yes/no) was administered to third- and fourth-year undergraduate students. Fisher exact test was used to assess the differences according to the student year of study and gender.Result: Receiving an overall response rate of 94.2%, highest responses in “yes” were received for wearing and changing gloves and wearing face masks. Changing face masks, hand pieces and burs between patients was practiced more by the senior students, whereas using a special container for disposing of sharp objects was reported more by juniors (p<0.05). No difference among genders was seen.Conclusion: The present study reports unsatisfactory infection control practices, which calls for strict follow-up of infection control guidelines
Recall System in Dental Practice: A Review
The patients are generally encouraged to attend their recall visits at regular intervals of six months, irrespective of the individual's risk of developing dental disease. The major important role of the dental recall has been seen as the prevention and early detection of dental caries and periodontal disease in particular. The recommendation of a six-month recall interval has become a mandatory practice in dental clinics. Thus, this paper reviews about the guidelines relating to the recall of the patients, various types of recall systems and how we can establish a recall visit. Transformation of <em>Kantha</em> Traditional Embroidery: As fabric painting
720-725Rising concern in traditional Indian embroideries for their time consuming techniques and out dated look and reaching the art of painting at its highest degree of excellence, demands for revival of traditional Indian embroideries. These require bringing them into contemporary look and developed through faster techniques. Fabric painting is an innovative, economical and time saving technique as compare to the embroidery. Present study was conducted for transforming Kantha traditional embroidery designs for fabric painting on jacket for its revival at Hisar, India. Fifteen motifs were explored from market survey, 3 designs were developed and selected from them and finally three placement-design combinations were selected for developing final products. Six jackets were developed, i.e., three with embroidery and three with painting. On the basis of experts’ preferences for developed jackets on various parameters, fabric painting technique was most preferred technique on the basis of overall appearance was considered best. The study will serve guidelines for a new designer to develop articles of same look from traditional embroidery technique with less time consuming techniques. It will open a new vista for women entrepreneur to make low cost articles with great demand. It will also enhance aesthetic beauty of traditional Kantha embroidery
Effect of denture soft liner on mandibular ridge resorption in complete denture wearers after 6 and 12 months of denture insertion: A prospective randomized clinical study
Purpose: Soft liners act as a cushion between the denture base and the residual ridge. Hence, it is important to study their effect on resorption of mandibular denture bearing area. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of soft denture liner on mandibular ridge resorption after 1 year in completely denture wearers.
Materials and Methods: Twenty-eight completely edentulous patients having age between 45 and 60 years with well-formed ridges in class I jaw relations were selected as per the inclusion and exclusion criterion. Randomization chart was used to enroll participants in experimental and control groups who were given mandibular dentures with and without soft denture liner, respectively. Vertical measurements were made on orthopantomograph and analyzed using Adobe Photoshop 7.0 software at five points, i.e., one at central incisor and two points at right and left first premolars and two in each first molar region.
Results: On application of repeated measures analysis of variance, both groups showed a significant change in bone height after denture delivery (P < 0.05). Intergroup comparison (Wilcoxon rank sum test) of bone height in different regions at various time intervals showed statistically significant difference in bone levels (P < 0.05) from baseline to 6 months and baseline to 12months (P < 0.01), while the difference was statistically not significant during 6 and 12 months’ period.
Conclusion: The use of soft denture liner significantly reduces the residual ridge resorption in complete denture wearers as compared to conventional denture wearers (without denture liner) over a period of 1 year
Extrapolation of phenolic compounds as multi-target agents against cancer and inflammation
<p>Natural products acquire massive structural and chemical diversity, which cannot be coordinated by any synthetic libraries for small molecules and they are continuing to inspire novel discoveries in health sciences. We have performed the computational calculations for geometry optimization and prediction of electronic and structural properties of some plant phenolic compounds through Gaussian 09 program. Energies of molecular orbitals were computed, to mimic out the stabilities arising from charge delocalization and intramolecular interactions. This process indicated the eventual charge transfer within the molecules. The molecular docking and ADMET properties of these compounds with a novel anticancer (HER2) and anti-inflammatory (COX-2) targets revealed that two molecules were capable of inhibiting both the targets, and could be used as multi target inhibitors. Furthermore, molecular dynamics simulation studies were performed to elucidate the binding mechanism and the comparison of inhibitor’s binding mode with diverse biological activities as anticancer and anti-inflammatory agents. A high-quality association was reported among quantum chemical, ADMET, docking, dynamics and MMGBSA results.</p> <p>Communicated By Ramaswamy H. Sarma</p
