The true nature of this work is to show that integration of visual art is taking place in the Illinois High Schools. This conclusion is the result of a survey sent out to a group of Illinois High Schools. The results show that the Central and Southern Illinois High Schools have more integration of academic subjects incorporated in their curriculum compared to Northern Illinois High Schools. Yet integration of other art subjects are taught more in the Northern Illinois High Schools then the Central or Southern Illinois High Schools. Physical Education proved to be the subject least likely to be integrated. Social Studies, Literature and Creative Writing showed the most positive responses of academic subjects. The arts subject that was least likely to be integrated by either group was dance movement. The three most likely to be integrated arts were senses, sound/music and literature/poetry. This paper also shows the most common teaching approach used by both groups is emphasis on elements and principles of design. The responses were then divided by school size. This paper will show that small schools integrate academic subjects more than medium or large schools. It will also show medium sized schools integrating other art subjects more than small or large schools. Small and large schools both chose physical education as the academic subject least integrated. The medium sized schools show composition as the least integrated academic subject. In the integration of other arts all groups integrated dance/movement least. The most integrated arts are senses, literature/poetry and music/sound. None of the three goups had them ranked in the same order. In the category of teaching approach all groups chose emphasis on elements and principle of design. The final chapter of this thesis examines many articles published that show integration taking place most the articles are project orientated. Many involve social studies. Other subjects are science, language arts, the senses, poetry, film and a musical

Physiologically-based testing system for the mechanical characterization of prosthetic vein valves

    Get PDF
Due to the relatively limited amount of work done to date on developing prosthetic vein (as opposed to cardiac) valves, advances in this topic require progress in three distinct areas: 1) improved device design, 2) relevant device testing conditions, and, 3) appropriate parameters for evaluation of results. It is the purpose of this paper to address two of these issues (#2 and #3) by: 1) performing a study of normal volunteers to quantify the anatomy and hemodynamic features of healthy venous valves, 2) construction of a 2-step, in vitro testing procedure, which simulates both physiologic and postural conditions seen in the lower extremity venous system, and, 3) defining several modified and new parameters which quantify dynamic valve characteristics

Genome-wide Association Study of Saturated, Mono- and Polyunsaturated Red Blood Cell Fatty Acids in the Framingham Heart Offspring Study

Most genome-wide association studies have explored relationships between genetic variants and plasma phospholipid fatty acid proportions, but few have examined apparent genetic influences on the membrane fatty acid profile of red blood cells (RBC). Using RBC fatty acid data from the Framingham Offspring Study, we analyzed over 2.5 million single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) for association with 14 RBC fatty acids identifying 191 different SNPs associated with at least 1 fatty acid. Significant associations (p\u3c1×10−8) were located within five distinct 1 MB regions. Of particular interest were novel associations between (1) arachidonic acid and PCOLCE2 (regulates apoA-I maturation and modulates apoA-I levels), and (2) oleic and linoleic acid and LPCAT3 (mediates the transfer of fatty acids between glycerolipids). We also replicated previously identified strong associations between SNPs in the FADS (chromosome 11) and ELOVL (chromosome 6) regions. Multiple SNPs explained 8–14% of the variation in 3 high abundance (\u3e11%) fatty acids, but only 1–3% in 4 low abundance (\u3c3%) fatty acids, with the notable exception of dihomo-gamma linolenic acid with 53% of variance explained by SNPs. Further studies are needed to determine the extent to which variations in these genes influence tissue fatty acid content and pathways modulated by fatty acids

Red Blood Cell Fatty Acid Patterns and Acute Coronary Syndrome

BACKGROUND:Assessment of coronary heart disease (CHD) risk is typically based on a weighted combination of standard risk factors. We sought to determine the extent to which a lipidomic approach based on red blood cell fatty acid (RBC-FA) profiles could discriminate acute coronary syndrome (ACS) cases from controls, and to compare RBC-FA discrimination with that based on standard risk factors. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS:RBC-FA profiles were measured in 668 ACS cases and 680 age-, race- and gender-matched controls. Multivariable logistic regression models based on FA profiles (FA) and standard risk factors (SRF) were developed on a random 2/3(rds) derivation set and validated on the remaining 1/3(rd). The area under receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves (c-statistics), misclassification rates, and model calibrations were used to evaluate the individual and combined models. The FA discriminated cases from controls better than the SRF (c = 0.85 vs. 0.77, p = 0.003) and the FA profile added significantly to the standard model (c = 0.88 vs. 0.77, p<0.0001). Hosmer-Lemeshow calibration was poor for the FA model alone (p = 0.01), but acceptable for both the SRF (p = 0.30) and combined models (p = 0.22). Misclassification rates were 23%, 29% and 20% for FA, the SRF, and the combined models, respectively. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE:RBC-FA profiles contribute significantly to the discrimination of ACS cases, especially when combined with standard risk factors. The utility of FA patterns in risk prediction warrants further investigation

Nutrition for the ageing brain: towards evidence for an optimal diet

    Get PDF
As people age they become increasingly susceptible to chronic and extremely debilitating brain diseases. The precise cause of the neuronal degeneration underlying these disorders, and indeed normal brain ageing remains however elusive. Considering the limits of existing preventive methods, there is a desire to develop effective and safe strategies. Growing preclinical and clinical research in healthy individuals or at the early stage of cognitive decline has demonstrated the beneficial impact of nutrition on cognitive functions. The present review is the most recent in a series produced by the Nutrition and Mental Performance Task Force under the auspice of the International Life Sciences Institute Europe (ILSI Europe). The latest scientific advances specific to how dietary nutrients and non-nutrient may affect cognitive ageing are presented. Furthermore, several key points related to mechanisms contributing to brain ageing, pathological conditions affecting brain function, and brain biomarkers are also discussed. Overall, findings are inconsistent and fragmented and more research is warranted to determine the underlying mechanisms and to establish dose-response relationships for optimal brain maintenance in different population subgroups. Such approaches are likely to provide the necessary evidence to develop research portfolios that will inform about new dietary recommendations on how to prevent cognitive decline

The aim of the study was to narrate what artificial intelligence is and how it can be utilized in today’s world. This thesis contains the results of qualitative article analysis and literature reviews done about artificial intelligence and artificial intelligence in sports. The theoretical framework of the thesis discussed the past, present and future of artificial intelligence. In the thesis artificial intelligence was also studied from the economic point of view, looking more closely on investments and the global leaders now and in the future. What kind of an impact will artificial intelligence have in the society is discussed more precisely when studying the possible threats and opportunities of artificial intelligence. As a research method, a documentary analysis of qualitative research was used in the thesis. The study analyzed 20 electronic articles and publications about artificial intelligence in sports. In the thesis the sports field was taken into account as a whole; from players, organizations and spectators point of view. The thesis shows what kind of an impact artificial intelligence will have in the sports industry and how the industry might change and look like in the future. In conclusion artificial intelligence will have an impact to the world and societies we live in, but how it will possibly change the future is to be seen
