    Haberlea rhodopensis (Friv.) reduces chromosomal aberrations in whole body irradiated rabbits

    Radioprotective effect of ethanolic extract of Haberlea rhodopensis have been studied by examining chromosome aberration in irradiated rabbits. Healthy adult New Zeland rabbits were injected intramuscularly (im) with 120 mg/kg body weight before and after irradiation or with double distilled water (DDW). They were exposed to whole body irradiation of 2.0 Gy gamma rays. After 24 h chromosomal aberrations were studied in the peripheral blood lymphocytes. Radiation (2.0 Gy) increased the number of aberrant cells from less than 3% in controls to almost 25%. Treatment with the total extract of Haberlea rhodopensis (HR) before and after irradiation resulted in a significant reduction in the percentage of aberrant metaphases as well as in the different types of aberration scored. Our results proved the ameliorating role of HR against radiation-induced chromosomal aberrations in rabbits. Further experimental studies using different cytogenetic and molecular biomarkers  are needed to clarify the exact mechanisms of radioprotective action of the HR extract

    Haberlea rhodopensis alcohol extract normalizes stress-responsive transcription of the human TP53 gene

    The Orpheus flower Haberlea rhodopensis (Friv.) of the family Gesneriaceae can go into anabiosis for long periods in an almost entirely desiccated state. It is an endemic relict from the Balkan Peninsula. Alcohol extracts from H. rhodopensis contain many biologically active substances with potent antioxidant, antigenotoxic, radioprotective, revitalizing and antiaging capabilities. However, regulating the gene networks responsible for these activities is vastly unknown. This study explores the cellular mechanisms underlying the protective effect of H. rhodopensis extracts (HRE). HeLa cells (human cervix epithelial carcinoma, HeLa ATCC® CCL-2™) were used as a model. We examined the changes in catalase activity and TP53 mRNA level shortly after oxidative (H2O2) and ionizing radiation (IR) induced stress with and without pre-incubation with HRE extracts. The dynamics in the activity of catalase, a main cellular antioxidant enzyme, and the expression of the stress-responsive gene TP53 were investigated by UV spectrophotometric assay and RT-qPCR, respectively. Under the applied stress conditions, H2O2 treatment and gamma radiation, catalase activity increased. This was a sign of induced ROS generation. In the first hours after treatment, the two stressors led to opposite changes in the levels of TP53 gene expression, which were alleviated by pre-incubation with HRE in a concentration-dependent manner. The broad biological activities of the studied extract, taking into account our results, show that ability of HRE to reduce the effect of stress is achieved through complex molecular mechanisms aimed at preserving cellular homeostasis. Mechanisms include the normalization of antioxidant enzyme activity such as catalase and the activity of TP53, one of the genes responsive to stress, by up or down-regulation

The recent paradigm of Ontology Mediated Information Extraction (OMIE) faces this problem by taking into account the knowledge expressed by a domain ontology, and reasoning over it to improve the quality of extracted data. MASTRO SYSTEM-T is a novel tool for OMIE, developed by Sapienza University and IBM Almaden Research.     This paper focuses on how automatic translation techniques integrated in a patent retrieval system increase its capabilities and make possible extended features and functionalities. We describe 1) a novel methodology for natural language to SPARQL translation based on a grammar– ontology interoperability automation and a query grammar for the patents domain; 2) a devised strategy for statisticalbased translation of patents that allows to transfer semantic annotations to the target language; 3) a built-in knowledge representation infrastructure that uses multilingual semantic annotations; and 4) an online application that offers a multilingual search interface over structural knowledge databases (domain ontologies) and multilingual documents (biomedical patents) that have been automatically translated.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    Identification of heavy-flavour jets with the CMS detector in pp collisions at 13 TeV

    Many measurements and searches for physics beyond the standard model at the LHC rely on the efficient identification of heavy-flavour jets, i.e. jets originating from bottom or charm quarks. In this paper, the discriminating variables and the algorithms used for heavy-flavour jet identification during the first years of operation of the CMS experiment in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, are presented. Heavy-flavour jet identification algorithms have been improved compared to those used previously at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. For jets with transverse momenta in the range expected in simulated tt\mathrm{t}\overline{\mathrm{t}} events, these new developments result in an efficiency of 68% for the correct identification of a b jet for a probability of 1% of misidentifying a light-flavour jet. The improvement in relative efficiency at this misidentification probability is about 15%, compared to previous CMS algorithms. In addition, for the first time algorithms have been developed to identify jets containing two b hadrons in Lorentz-boosted event topologies, as well as to tag c jets. The large data sample recorded in 2016 at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV has also allowed the development of new methods to measure the efficiency and misidentification probability of heavy-flavour jet identification algorithms. The heavy-flavour jet identification efficiency is measured with a precision of a few per cent at moderate jet transverse momenta (between 30 and 300 GeV) and about 5% at the highest jet transverse momenta (between 500 and 1000 GeV)

    Differential cross section measurements for the production of a W boson in association with jets in proton–proton collisions at √s = 7 TeV

    Measurements are reported of differential cross sections for the production of a W boson, which decays into a muon and a neutrino, in association with jets, as a function of several variables, including the transverse momenta (pT) and pseudorapidities of the four leading jets, the scalar sum of jet transverse momenta (HT), and the difference in azimuthal angle between the directions of each jet and the muon. The data sample of pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV was collected with the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb[superscript −1]. The measured cross sections are compared to predictions from Monte Carlo generators, MadGraph + pythia and sherpa, and to next-to-leading-order calculations from BlackHat + sherpa. The differential cross sections are found to be in agreement with the predictions, apart from the pT distributions of the leading jets at high pT values, the distributions of the HT at high-HT and low jet multiplicity, and the distribution of the difference in azimuthal angle between the leading jet and the muon at low values.United States.     Risk portfolio on modern finance has become increasingly technical, requiring the use of sophisticated mathematical tools in both research and practice. Since companies cannot insure themselves completely against risk, as human incompetence in predicting the future precisely that written in Al-Quran surah Luqman verse 34, they have to manage it to yield an optimal portfolio. The objective here is to minimize the variance among all portfolios, or alternatively, to maximize expected return among all portfolios that has at least a certain expected return. Furthermore, this study focuses on optimizing risk portfolio so called Markowitz MVO (Mean-Variance Optimization). Some theoretical frameworks for analysis are arithmetic mean, geometric mean, variance, covariance, linear programming, and quadratic programming. Moreover, finding a minimum variance portfolio produces a convex quadratic programming, that is minimizing the objective function ðð¥with constraintsð ð 𥠥 ðandð´ð¥ = ð. The outcome of this research is the solution of optimal risk portofolio in some investments that could be finished smoothly using MATLAB R2007b software together with its graphic analysis

    Juxtaposing BTE and ATE – on the role of the European insurance industry in funding civil litigation

    One of the ways in which legal services are financed, and indeed shaped, is through private insurance arrangement. Two contrasting types of legal expenses insurance contracts (LEI) seem to dominate in Europe: before the event (BTE) and after the event (ATE) legal expenses insurance. Notwithstanding institutional differences between different legal systems, BTE and ATE insurance arrangements may be instrumental if government policy is geared towards strengthening a market-oriented system of financing access to justice for individuals and business. At the same time, emphasizing the role of a private industry as a keeper of the gates to justice raises issues of accountability and transparency, not readily reconcilable with demands of competition. Moreover, multiple actors (clients, lawyers, courts, insurers) are involved, causing behavioural dynamics which are not easily predicted or influenced. Against this background, this paper looks into BTE and ATE arrangements by analysing the particularities of BTE and ATE arrangements currently available in some European jurisdictions and by painting a picture of their respective markets and legal contexts. This allows for some reflection on the performance of BTE and ATE providers as both financiers and keepers. Two issues emerge from the analysis that are worthy of some further reflection. Firstly, there is the problematic long-term sustainability of some ATE products. Secondly, the challenges faced by policymakers that would like to nudge consumers into voluntarily taking out BTE LEI

Productivity of cooperative in Pelalawan was highly but efficiency still low. Profit and income were highly, even liquidity of cooperative very high, and solvability was good
