Sur les emplois de θαλλός, θαλλίον à l'époque romaine et byzantine
This paper attempts to prove that, rather than Egyptian influence, Greek sequence of metonymies can explain the sense-change from "young branch" to "sack" and "gift", then "extra-payment", and, perhaps, "tax". Some papyrus-readings and restorations are corrected.Plutôt que par une influence égyptienne, l'auteur explique par un enchaînement de métonymies le passage du sens de ces mots de «rameau vert» à «sac» et «cadeau», puis à «versement supplémentaire», et de là, peut-être, au sens de «taxe». Neither amateurs nor professionals: The status of Greek Athletes
The aim of this chapter is to question whether it is reasonable to apply the labels "amateurs" or "professionals" to Ancient Olympics, whether they fit the specific features of ancient athletics, and whether they are useful tools or mere obstacles for an understanding of the ancient phenomena. This article argues that neither of the two terms helps in understanding the social reality of ancient athletes
