The Impacts of Preconception Nutrition on Pregnancy: An educational module promoting preconception care

    Get PDF
Recent research has shown that maternal overweight and obesity (OW/OB) prior to conception are directly and independently associated with negative outcomes in pregnancy, birth, infancy, childhood, and beyond. The purpose of this project was to create and evaluate educational materials for providers who work with women of childbearing age, in order to encourage and facilitate conversations about the importance of preconception nutrition in family planning. A literature review was conducted, and from it two documents were created: 1) an educational module for providers offering background information, relevant research, and tips for discussing the matter with patients; and 2) an infographic-style handout, written in lay language, for providers to use directly with patients. These materials were presented to 16 practitioners, and the efficacy of the materials was assessed using pre- and post-intervention surveys, in addition to qualitative feedback. Responses indicated that the educational materials were positively received by the participants, and the vast majority of participants planned to increase or enhance their discussions of this important topic as a result of the module. Given the current national overweight and obesity epidemic, such efforts could have wide-reaching impacts on health outcomes. This project, while small, indicates that further such educational efforts for providers are warranted

Building a Global Village: Intercultural Communication for the International House at The College of New Jersey

    Get PDF
The International House (I-House) at The College of New Jersey plays an integral part in welcoming international exchange students to New Jersey and the United States. It is a venue for international students to live and interact with TCNJ students on a daily basis. However, in previous years, the programming for the International House residents has been sparse. A living-learning community must successfully marry living with learning to ensure that students gain the full benefits of living with students from around the world. Building a Global Village is an intercultural communication supplement to the International House experience that begins to address this need at The College of New Jersey. Using intercultural communication and holistic student development theories and principles of experiential learning, students will explore how their daily interactions with each other are influenced by their cultures and values. The curriculum draws from the tenets of Milton Bennett’s Intercultural Sensitivity Development scale and seeks to move students along this continuum. By providing International House residents with a structured calendar of intercultural communication workshops, student-led culture nights and pre-planned activities and trips, Building a Global Village in the International House will increase student participation and reflection of their experience in the I-House

Geriatric Competency Training for Staff Providing Chronic Care Management Services

    Get PDF
Americans 65 and older are the growing at an unprecedented rate. Older adults with complex needs are outpacing the number of healthcare providers equipped to care for them. In preparation for implementation of Chronic Care Management (CCM) service, it will be important to engage staff and motivate participation through planned education and training. The purpose of this project was to implement a staff training that included increasing basic knowledge of the CCM program and participant knowledge of age-based competency principles. A pretest posttest design evaluated participants (N=31) who attended the Older Adult Sensitivity Training (OAST) program. Knowledge was measured using an updated version of Palmore’s Facts on Aging Quiz (FAQ) and summary questions developed to provide an overview of CCM services. There was a significant increase in CCM scores (p=.000) between the pre test (M=3.19, SD =.98) and post (M=4.65, SD = .75). There was no significant difference in mean FAQ scores between the pretest (M=33.10, SD=3.42) and the posttest (M=33.39, SD=3.70). Results from this project support a need to develop and implement educational programs for members of the healthcare team who are caring for older adults to improve patient outcomes and reduce healthcare costs

Examination of perspective and feasibility of Lugano as a business tourism destination: focusing on the group meetings industry

    Get PDF
Despite its popularity as a leisure destination, data shows that Lugano’s potential as a business tourism destination is underexploited. This shortcoming, however, is in itself rarely given due consideration, since research focusing on Lugano as such a destination is scarce. This paper looks at Lugano from this less documented angle with a focus on the meetings industry, with the goal of evaluating the potential of the City as a business destination and giving recommendations for improvements. In order to achieve this objective, studies of secondary data were undertaken and actors of the business tourism industry in Switzerland and Lugano were interviewed. These actors included participants of a congress held in Lugano, as well as several Swiss Meeting Planners/PCO’s, and some business hotels in Lugano. The results of secondary research showed that while Lugano already fulfills key success criteria in the field of business tourism –with a Congress Center listed in the ten largest of Switzerland, several business hotels, and a University- the low occupation rate of the different venues, an apparent lack of cooperation and coordination between them, and an insufficient interest from the local and regional tourism offices suggest that Lugano could embrace its potential more fully. Primary research results also indicated that while promotion and exercise of the City’s business tourism are not inexistent, much more could be done in order to improve its standing as such a destination. This thesis constitutes an attempt to illuminate the first steps in that direction
