Pregnenolone and pregnenolone sulfate metabolism by human fetal testes in vitro

Homogenates of testes from human fetuses of 12-16 weeks gestation were incubated in vitro with pregnenolone-4-14C and pregnenolone-7-3H-sulfate. Dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate and pregnenediol sulfate, each bearing the tritium label only, were identified in the conjugated fraction. Progesterone, 17[alpha]-hydroxyprogesterone, 17[alpha]-hydroxypregnenolone, dehydroepiandrosterone, androstenedione and testosterone, each bearing both a tritium and 14C-label, were identified in the organic fraction. In a similar incubation, with pregnenolone-7-3H-sulfate-35S as substrate, the direct conversion to 17[alpha]-hydroxypregnenolone sulfate was demonstrated. The presence of slight sulfatase activity was also noted. The direct metabolism of steroid sulfates and the presence of sulfatase activity in this fetal tissue and the possible significance of these findings in the developing male fetus are discussed.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/32735/1/0000104.pd

CALIFA, the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area survey: I. Survey presentation

    Get PDF
We present here the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area (CALIFA) survey, which has been designed to provide a first step in this direction. We summarize the survey goals and design, including sample selection and observational strategy. We also showcase the data taken during the first observing runs (June/July 2010) and outline the reduction pipeline, quality control schemes and general characteristics of the reduced data. This survey is obtaining spatially resolved spectroscopic information of a diameter selected sample of ∌600\sim600 galaxies in the Local Universe (0.005< z <0.03). CALIFA has been designed to allow the building of two-dimensional maps of the following quantities: (a) stellar populations: ages and metallicities; (b) ionized gas: distribution, excitation mechanism and chemical abundances; and (c) kinematic properties: both from stellar and ionized gas components. CALIFA uses the PPAK Integral Field Unit (IFU), with a hexagonal field-of-view of \sim1.3\sq\arcmin', with a 100% covering factor by adopting a three-pointing dithering scheme. The optical wavelength range is covered from 3700 to 7000 {\AA}, using two overlapping setups (V500 and V1200), with different resolutions: R\sim850 and R\sim1650, respectively. CALIFA is a legacy survey, intended for the community. The reduced data will be released, once the quality has been guaranteed. The analyzed data fulfill the expectations of the original observing proposal, on the basis of a set of quality checks and exploratory analysis. We conclude from this first look at the data that CALIFA will be an important resource for archaeological studies of galaxies in the Local Universe.Comment: 32 pages, 29 figures, Accepted for publishing in Astronomy and Astrophysic

    Get PDF
A review of state the art about the structure, classification and operation of biosensors applied in food and biological areas is presented. This review is focused to mechanical biosensors that use mill, micro and nanocantilevers. Basic concepts of atomic force microscopy and optical systems, used as testing platform of biosensors are described. The most funcionalized strategies and geometrical configurations are also explained. Mathematical methods for evaluating the performance in static and dynamic mode of the mechanical biosensors are reviewed and examples of application in biological and food areas are provided. An overall description of the operational effect of operation conditions and design variables on the sensitivity devices is also proposed. A brief description of the design processes and manufacturing of cantilevers based silicon technology as well as information about BioMEMS and BioNEMS are provided. Finally, overall tends in research, development and commercialization of biosensors are described briefly as well as probable areas of development in food biosensors. Thereby, this review provides an overall view of biosensors, as an exploratory guide to identify the most important aspects of this technology

Search for CP violation in D+→K−K+π+D^{+} \to K^{-}K^{+}\pi^{+} decays

    Get PDF
A model-independent search for direct CP violation in the Cabibbo suppressed decay D+→K−K+π+D^+ \to K^- K^+\pi^+ in a sample of approximately 370,000 decays is carried out. The data were collected by the LHCb experiment in 2010 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35 pb−1^{-1}. The normalized Dalitz plot distributions for D+D^+ and D−D^- are compared using four different binning schemes that are sensitive to different manifestations of CP violation. No evidence for CP asymmetry is found.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.

Opposite-side flavour tagging of B mesons at the LHCb experiment

    Get PDF
The calibration and performance of the oppositeside flavour tagging algorithms used for the measurements of time-dependent asymmetries at the LHCb experiment are described. The algorithms have been developed using simulated events and optimized and calibrated with B + →J/ψK +, B0 →J/ψK ∗0 and B0 →D ∗− ÎŒ + ΜΌ decay modes with 0.37 fb−1 of data collected in pp collisions at √ s = 7 TeV during the 2011 physics run. The oppositeside tagging power is determined in the B + → J/ψK + channel to be (2.10 ± 0.08 ± 0.24) %, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic

Measurement of charged particle multiplicities in pppp collisions at s=7{\sqrt{s} =7}TeV in the forward region

    Get PDF
The charged particle production in proton-proton collisions is studied with the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of s=7{\sqrt{s} =7}TeV in different intervals of pseudorapidity η\eta. The charged particles are reconstructed close to the interaction region in the vertex detector, which provides high reconstruction efficiency in the η\eta ranges −2.5<η<−2.0-2.5<\eta<-2.0 and 2.0<η<4.52.0<\eta<4.5. The data were taken with a minimum bias trigger, only requiring one or more reconstructed tracks in the vertex detector. By selecting an event sample with at least one track with a transverse momentum greater than 1 GeV/c a hard QCD subsample is investigated. Several event generators are compared with the data; none are able to describe fully the multiplicity distributions or the charged particle density distribution as a function of η\eta. In general, the models underestimate the charged particle production

Measurement of the ratio of branching fractions BR(B0 -> K*0 gamma)/BR(Bs0 -> phi gamma)

    Get PDF
The ratio of branching fractions of the radiative B decays B0 -> K*0 gamma and Bs0 -> phi gamma has been measured using 0.37 fb-1 of pp collisions at a centre of mass energy of sqrt(s) = 7 TeV, collected by the LHCb experiment. The value obtained is BR(B0 -> K*0 gamma)/BR(Bs0 -> phi gamma) = 1.12 +/- 0.08 ^{+0.06}_{-0.04} ^{+0.09}_{-0.08}, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third is associated to the ratio of fragmentation fractions fs/fd. Using the world average for BR(B0 -> K*0 gamma) = (4.33 +/- 0.15) x 10^{-5}, the branching fraction BR(Bs0 -> phi gamma) is measured to be (3.9 +/- 0.5) x 10^{-5}, which is the most precise measurement to date.Comment: 15 pages, 1 figure, 2 table

Measurement of the Bs0→J/ψKS0B_s^0\to J/\psi K_S^0 branching fraction

    Get PDF
The Bs0→J/ψKS0B_s^0\to J/\psi K_S^0 branching fraction is measured in a data sample corresponding to 0.41fb−1fb^{-1} of integrated luminosity collected with the LHCb detector at the LHC. This channel is sensitive to the penguin contributions affecting the sin2ÎČ\beta measurement from B0→J/ψKS0B^0\to J/\psi K_S^0 The time-integrated branching fraction is measured to be BF(Bs0→J/ψKS0)=(1.83±0.28)×10−5BF(B_s^0\to J/\psi K_S^0)=(1.83\pm0.28)\times10^{-5}. This is the most precise measurement to date
