Thawing of permafrost may disturb historic cattle burial grounds in East Siberia
Climate warming in the Arctic may increase the risk of zoonoses due to expansion of vector habitats, improved chances of vector survival during winter, and permafrost degradation. Monitoring of soil temperatures at Siberian cryology control stations since 1970 showed correlations between air temperatures and the depth of permafrost layer that thawed during summer season. Between 1900s and 1980s, the temperature of surface layer of permafrost increased by 2â4°C; and a further increase of 3°C is expected. Frequent outbreaks of anthrax caused death of 1.5 million deer in Russian North between 1897 and 1925. Anthrax among people or cattle has been reported in 29,000 settlements of the Russian North, including more than 200 Yakutia settlements, which are located near the burial grounds of cattle that died from anthrax. Statistically significant positive trends in annual average temperatures were established in 8 out of 17 administrative districts of Yakutia for which sufficient meteorological data were available. At present, it is not known whether further warming of the permafrost will lead to the release of viable anthrax organisms. Nevertheless, we suggest that it would be prudent to undertake careful monitoring of permafrost conditions in all areas where an anthrax outbreak had occurred in the past
An exceptionally weak Devonian geomagnetic field recorded by the Viluy Traps, Siberia
The detection of anomalous time averaged geomagnetic behaviour is crucial for understanding past magnetospheric shielding and inferring deep Earth evolution. Links have been suggested between geomagnetic field variation over timescales of tens to hundreds of millions of years and processes near the coreâmantle boundary (CMB); however, this becomes difficult to establish prior to the Permo-Carboniferous Reversed Superchron (PCRS; 267â319 Ma) due to a lack of reliable data. To improve the record prior to the PCRS, we present multi-method produced paleointensity results from nines dykes and lava flows from the Viluy Traps, Siberia, emplaced during the Upper Devonian between 376.7 Âą 1.7 Ma and 364.4 Âą 1.7 Ma. These sites have previously been published as part of two paleodirectional studies, one of which produced the accepted 360 Ma pole for Siberia (Q factor 6). All of the sites produced very weak field values ranging from 4.3â14.9 Z A m2, in close agreement with other recent results from Mid-Lower Devonian Siberian samples. QPI criteria have been used to illustrate the reliability of these new, low paleointensities, confirming the period of weak field suggested by other recent Siberian work, and the period of implied increased incidence of solar wind radiation, extended into the Upper Devonian. Along with evidence for moderate-high reversal frequencies and a potentially significant multipolar component during the Devonian, these weak field values also suggest a significantly different pattern of heat flow across the CMB relative to more recent times
Inaccurate DNA Synthesis in Cell Extracts of Yeast Producing Active Human DNA Polymerase Iota
Mammalian Pol Κ has an unusual combination of properties: it is stimulated by Mn2+ ions, can bypass some DNA lesions and misincorporates âGâ opposite template âTâ more frequently than incorporates the correct âA.â We recently proposed a method of detection of Pol Κ activity in animal cell extracts, based on primer extension opposite the template T with a high concentration of only two nucleotides, dGTP and dATP (incorporation of âGâ versus âAâ method of Gening, abbreviated as âmisGvAâ). We provide unambiguous proof of the âmisGvAâ approach concept and extend the applicability of the method for the studies of variants of Pol Κ in the yeast model system with different cation cofactors. We produced human Pol Κ in baker's yeast, which do not have a POLI ortholog. The âmisGvAâ activity is absent in cell extracts containing an empty vector, or producing catalytically dead Pol Κ, or Pol Κ lacking exon 2, but is robust in the strain producing wild-type Pol Κ or its catalytic core, or protein with the active center L62I mutant. The signature pattern of primer extension products resulting from inaccurate DNA synthesis by extracts of cells producing either Pol Κ or human Pol Ρ is different. The DNA sequence of the template is critical for the detection of the infidelity of DNA synthesis attributed to DNA Pol Κ. The primer/template and composition of the exogenous DNA precursor pool can be adapted to monitor replication fidelity in cell extracts expressing various error-prone Pols or mutator variants of accurate Pols. Finally, we demonstrate that the mutation rates in yeast strains producing human DNA Pols Κ and Ρ are not elevated over the control strain, despite highly inaccurate DNA synthesis by their extracts
Ribosome formation from subunits studied by stopped-flow and Rayleigh light scattering
Light scattering and standard stopped-flow techniques were used to monitor rapid association of ribosomal subunits during initiation of eubacterial protein synthesis. The effects of the initiation factors IF1, IF2, IF3 and buffer conditions on subunit association were studied along with the role of GTP in this process. The part of light scattering theory that is essential for kinetic measurements is high-lighted in the main text and a more general treatment of Rayleigh scattering from macromolecules is given in an appendix
Electron excitation and energy transfer rates for H2O in the upper atmosphere
Recent measurements of the cross sections for electronic state excitations in
H2O have made it possible to calculate rates applicable to these excitation
processes. We thus present here calculations of electron energy transfer rates
for electronic and vibrational state excitations in H2O, as well as rates for
excitation of some of these states by atmospheric thermal and auroral secondary
electrons. The calculation of these latter rates is an important first step
towards our aim of including water into a statistical equilibrium model of the
atmosphere under auroral conditions.Comment: 15 pages, 8 figure
Measurement of the t(t)over-bar production cross section in the dilepton channel in pp collisions at âs=8 TeV
The top-antitop quark (t (t) over bar) production cross section is measured in proton-proton collisions at root s = 8 TeV with the CMS experiment at the LHC, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.3 fb(-1). The measurement is performed by analysing events with a pair of electrons or muons, or one electron and one muon, and at least two jets, one of which is identified as originating from hadronisation of a bottom quark. The measured cross section is 239 +/- 2 (stat.) +/- 11 (syst.) +/- 6 (lum.) pb, for an assumed top-quark mass of 172.5 GeV, in agreement with the prediction of the standard model
Performance of CMS muon reconstruction in pp collision events at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
The performance of muon reconstruction, identification, and triggering in CMS
has been studied using 40 inverse picobarns of data collected in pp collisions
at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV at the LHC in 2010. A few benchmark sets of selection
criteria covering a wide range of physics analysis needs have been examined.
For all considered selections, the efficiency to reconstruct and identify a
muon with a transverse momentum pT larger than a few GeV is above 95% over the
whole region of pseudorapidity covered by the CMS muon system, abs(eta) < 2.4,
while the probability to misidentify a hadron as a muon is well below 1%. The
efficiency to trigger on single muons with pT above a few GeV is higher than
90% over the full eta range, and typically substantially better. The overall
momentum scale is measured to a precision of 0.2% with muons from Z decays. The
transverse momentum resolution varies from 1% to 6% depending on pseudorapidity
for muons with pT below 100 GeV and, using cosmic rays, it is shown to be
better than 10% in the central region up to pT = 1 TeV. Observed distributions

X-ray emission from the Sombrero galaxy: discrete sources
We present a study of discrete X-ray sources in and around the
bulge-dominated, massive Sa galaxy, Sombrero (M104), based on new and archival
Chandra observations with a total exposure of ~200 ks. With a detection limit
of L_X = 1E37 erg/s and a field of view covering a galactocentric radius of ~30
kpc (11.5 arcminute), 383 sources are detected. Cross-correlation with Spitler
et al.'s catalogue of Sombrero globular clusters (GCs) identified from HST/ACS
observations reveals 41 X-rays sources in GCs, presumably low-mass X-ray
binaries (LMXBs). We quantify the differential luminosity functions (LFs) for
both the detected GC and field LMXBs, whose power-low indices (~1.1 for the
GC-LF and ~1.6 for field-LF) are consistent with previous studies for
elliptical galaxies. With precise sky positions of the GCs without a detected
X-ray source, we further quantify, through a fluctuation analysis, the GC LF at
fainter luminosities down to 1E35 erg/s. The derived index rules out a
faint-end slope flatter than 1.1 at a 2 sigma significance, contrary to recent
findings in several elliptical galaxies and the bulge of M31. On the other
hand, the 2-6 keV unresolved emission places a tight constraint on the field
LF, implying a flattened index of ~1.0 below 1E37 erg/s. We also detect 101
sources in the halo of Sombrero. The presence of these sources cannot be
interpreted as galactic LMXBs whose spatial distribution empirically follows
the starlight. Their number is also higher than the expected number of cosmic
AGNs (52+/-11 [1 sigma]) whose surface density is constrained by deep X-ray
surveys. We suggest that either the cosmic X-ray background is unusually high
in the direction of Sombrero, or a distinct population of X-ray sources is

Azimuthal anisotropy of charged particles at high transverse momenta in PbPb collisions at sqrt(s[NN]) = 2.76 TeV
The azimuthal anisotropy of charged particles in PbPb collisions at
nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 2.76 TeV is measured with the CMS
detector at the LHC over an extended transverse momentum (pt) range up to
approximately 60 GeV. The data cover both the low-pt region associated with
hydrodynamic flow phenomena and the high-pt region where the anisotropies may
reflect the path-length dependence of parton energy loss in the created medium.
The anisotropy parameter (v2) of the particles is extracted by correlating
charged tracks with respect to the event-plane reconstructed by using the
energy deposited in forward-angle calorimeters. For the six bins of collision
centrality studied, spanning the range of 0-60% most-central events, the
observed v2 values are found to first increase with pt, reaching a maximum
around pt = 3 GeV, and then to gradually decrease to almost zero, with the
decline persisting up to at least pt = 40 GeV over the full centrality range
