An Investigation into the Functional Changes Brought about by Full Body Lycra Suits in Children with Cerebral Palsy
Background:
The use of Lycra Suits in the management of cerebral palsy (CP) is extremely commonplace though little research has being carried out on them and their effect on lower limbs in walking. Using 3D motion analysis techniques the movement of the limbs may be quantified with far greater accuracy in all three planes. The aim of this project was to evaluate the effectiveness of Lycra Suits in children with Cerebral Palsy during walking.
Methods:
Eleven children (nine male and two female) aged 2yrs to 9yrs old, with Cerebral Palsy or similar neurological disorders were recruited to participate in the study. The patients were initially tested without the Lycra Suit (NIni) then again when wearing the Lycra Suit for the first time (SIni). The participants then wore the suit daily for twelve weeks, whilst continuing their usual daily activities and physiotherapy treatments. Following this the participants were tested again, firstly whilst wearing the Lycra Suit (S3), then immediately after removing the suit (NS3). Testing involved the patients performing three repetitions of a 10m walking test at their usual walking speed. Joint angles in the sagittal plane were measured at the hip, knee and ankle, and in the transverse plane at the hip. The results were reported as single case studies.
Results:
Joint angles at the hip, knee and ankle all showed varying responses across all conditions, both within and across subjects. All eleven children showed changes in joint angle towards normal age-matched values. In conclusion it is clear that the responses to the lycra garments are as varied and individual as the presentations of Cerebral Palsy itself. With this in mind therapists should ensure continuing observations are carried out during periods of wear, ensuring physical ability both with and without the suit are not being reduced as a consequence
Complete Wetting of Pits and Grooves
For one-component volatile fluids governed by dispersion forces an effective
interface Hamiltonian, derived from a microscopic density functional theory, is
used to study complete wetting of geometrically structured substrates. Also the
long range of substrate potentials is explicitly taken into account. Four types
of geometrical patterns are considered: (i) one-dimensional periodic arrays of
rectangular or parabolic grooves and (ii) two-dimensional lattices of
cylindrical or parabolic pits. We present numerical evidence that at the
centers of the cavity regions the thicknesses of the adsorbed films obey
precisely the same geometrical covariance relation, which has been recently
reported for complete cone and wedge filling. However, this covariance does not
hold for the laterally averaged wetting film thicknesses. For sufficiently deep
cavities with vertical walls and close to liquid-gas phase coexistence in the
bulk, the film thicknesses exhibit an effective planar scaling regime, which as
function of undersaturation is characterized by a power law with the common
critical exponent -1/3 as for a flat substrate, but with the amplitude
depending on the geometrical features.Comment: 12 page
Adsorption Isotherms of Hydrogen: The Role of Thermal Fluctuations
It is shown that experimentally obtained isotherms of adsorption on solid
substrates may be completely reconciled with Lifshitz theory when thermal
fluctuations are taken into account. This is achieved within the framework of a
solid-on-solid model which is solved numerically. Analysis of the fluctuation
contributions observed for hydrogen adsorption onto gold substrates allows to
determine the surface tension of the free hydrogen film as a function of film
thickness. It is found to decrease sharply for film thicknesses below seven

Long range correlations generated by phase separation. Exact results from field theory
We consider near-critical planar systems with boundary conditions inducing phase separation. While order parameter correlations decay exponentially in pure phases, we show by direct field theoretical derivation how phase separation generates long range correlations in the direction parallel to the interface, and determine their exact analytic form. The latter leads to specific contributions to the structure factor of the interface
Wetting films on chemically heterogeneous substrates
Based on a microscopic density functional theory we investigate the
morphology of thin liquidlike wetting films adsorbed on substrates endowed with
well-defined chemical heterogeneities. As paradigmatic cases we focus on a
single chemical step and on a single stripe. In view of applications in
microfluidics the accuracy of guiding liquids by chemical microchannels is
discussed. Finally we give a general prescription of how to investigate
theoretically the wetting properties of substrates with arbitrary chemical

Loss of the Metalloprotease ADAM9 Leads to Cone-Rod Dystrophy in Humans and Retinal Degeneration in Mice
Cone-rod dystrophy (CRD) is an inherited progressive retinal dystrophy affecting the function of cone and rod photoreceptors. By autozygosity mapping, we identified null mutations in the ADAM metallopeptidase domain 9 (ADAM9) gene in four consanguineous families with recessively inherited early-onset CRD. We also found reduced photoreceptor responses in Adam9 knockout mice, previously reported to be asymptomatic. In 12-month-old knockout mice, photoreceptors appear normal, but the apical processes of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells are disorganized and contact between photoreceptor outer segments (POSs) and the RPE apical surface is compromised. In 20-month-old mice, there is clear evidence of progressive retinal degeneration with disorganized POS and thinning of the outer nuclear layer (ONL) in addition to the anomaly at the POS-RPE junction. RPE basal deposits and macrophages were also apparent in older mice. These findings therefore not only identify ADAM9 as a CRD gene but also identify a form of pathology wherein retinal disease first manifests at the POS-RPE junction
Beetle and plant arrow poisons of the Ju|’hoan and Hai||om San peoples of Namibia (Insecta, Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae; Plantae, Anacardiaceae, Apocynaceae, Burseraceae)
The use of archery to hunt appears relatively late in human history. It is poorly understood but the application of poisons to arrows to increase lethality must have occurred shortly after developing bow hunting methods; these early multi-stage transitions represent cognitive shifts in human evolution. This paper is a synthesis of widely-scattered literature in anthropology, entomology, and chemistry, dealing with San (“Bushmen”) arrow poisons. The term San (or Khoisan) covers many indigenous groups using so-called ‘click languages’ in southern Africa. Beetles are used for arrow poison by at least eight San groups and one non-San group. Fieldwork and interviews with Ju|’hoan and Hai||om hunters in Namibia revealed major differences in the nature and preparation of arrow poisons, bow and arrow construction, and poison antidote. Ju|’hoan hunters use leaf-beetle larvae of Diamphidia Gerstaecker and Polyclada Chevrolat (Chrysomelidae: Galerucinae: Alticini) collected from soil around the host plants Commiphora africana (A. Rich.) Engl. and Commiphora angolensis Engl. (Burseracaeae). In the Nyae Nyae area of Namibia, Ju|’hoan hunters use larvae of Diamphidia nigroornata Ståhl. Larvae and adults live above-ground on the plants and eat leaves, but the San collect the underground cocoons to extract the mature larvae. Larval hemolymph is mixed with saliva and applied to arrows. Hai||om hunters boil the milky plant sap of Adenium bohemianum Schinz (Apocynaceae) to reduce it to a thick paste that is applied to their arrows. The socio-cultural, historical, and ecological contexts of the various San groups may determine differences in the sources and preparation of poisons, bow and arrow technology, hunting behaviors, poison potency, and perhaps antidotes
From their own perspective - constraints in the Polio Eradication Initiative: perceptions of health workers and managers in a district of Pakistan's Punjab province
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The success of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative was remarkable, but four countries - Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and Nigeria - never interrupted polio transmission. Pakistan reportedly achieved all milestones except interrupting virus transmission. This paper describes the perceptions of health workers and managers regarding constraints in the Polio Eradication Initiative (PEI) to ultimately provide evidence for designing future interventions.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A qualitative cross-sectional study using focus group discussions and in-depth interviews was conducted in the Nankana Sahib District of Pakistan's Punjab province. Study subjects included staff at all levels in the PEI at district headquarters, in all 4 tehsils (sub-districts) and at 20 randomly selected primary health centers. In total, 4 FGD and 7 interview sessions were conducted and individual session summary notes were prepared and later synthesized, consolidated and subjected to conceptual analysis.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The main constraints identified in the study were the poor condition of the cold chain in all aspects, poor skills and a lack of authority in resource allocation and human resource management, limited advocacy and communication resources, a lack of skills and training among staff at all levels in the PEI/EPI in almost all aspects of the program, a deficiency of public health professionals, poor health services structure, administrative issues (including ineffective means of performance evaluation, bureaucratic and political influences, problems in vaccination areas and field programs, no birth records at health facilities, and poor linkage between different preventive programs), unreliable reporting and poor monitoring and supervision systems, limited use of local data for interventions, and unclear roles and responsibilities after decentralization.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The study highlights various shortcomings and bottlenecks in the PEI, and the barriers identified should be considered in prioritizing future strategies.</p
A pH-driven transition of the cytoplasm from a fluid- to a solid-like state promotes entry into dormancy
Cells can enter into a dormant state when faced with unfavorable conditions. However, how cells enter into and recover from this state is still poorly understood. Here, we study dormancy in different eukaryotic organisms and find it to be associated with a significant decrease in the mobility of organelles and foreign tracer particles. We show that this reduced mobility is caused by an influx of protons and a marked acidification of the cytoplasm, which leads to widespread macromolecular assembly of proteins and triggers a transition of the cytoplasm to a solid-like state with increased mechanical stability. We further demonstrate that this transition is required for cellular survival under conditions of starvation. Our findings have broad implications for understanding alternative physiological states, such as quiescence and dormancy, and create a new view of the cytoplasm as an adaptable fluid that can reversibly transition into a protective solid-like state
