Structure of nanoparticles embedded in micellar polycrystals
We investigate by scattering techniques the structure of water-based soft
composite materials comprising a crystal made of Pluronic block-copolymer
micelles arranged in a face-centered cubic lattice and a small amount (at most
2% by volume) of silica nanoparticles, of size comparable to that of the
micelles. The copolymer is thermosensitive: it is hydrophilic and fully
dissolved in water at low temperature (T ~ 0{\deg}C), and self-assembles into
micelles at room temperature, where the block-copolymer is amphiphilic. We use
contrast matching small-angle neuron scattering experiments to probe
independently the structure of the nanoparticles and that of the polymer. We
find that the nanoparticles do not perturb the crystalline order. In addition,
a structure peak is measured for the silica nanoparticles dispersed in the
polycrystalline samples. This implies that the samples are spatially
heterogeneous and comprise, without macroscopic phase separation, silica-poor
and silica-rich regions. We show that the nanoparticle concentration in the
silica-rich regions is about tenfold the average concentration. These regions
are grain boundaries between crystallites, where nanoparticles concentrate, as
shown by static light scattering and by light microscopy imaging of the
samples. We show that the temperature rate at which the sample is prepared
strongly influence the segregation of the nanoparticles in the

A Spitzer Space Telescope study of SN 2002hh: an infrared echo from a Type IIP supernova
We present late-time (590-994 d) mid-IR photometry of the normal, but
highly-reddened Type IIP supernova SN 2002hh. Bright, cool, slowly-fading
emission is detected from the direction of the supernova. Most of this flux
appears not to be driven by the supernova event but instead probably originates
in a cool, obscured star-formation region or molecular cloud along the
line-of-sight. We also show, however, that the declining component of the flux
is consistent with an SN-powered IR echo from a dusty progenitor CSM. Mid-IR
emission could also be coming from newly-condensed dust and/or an ejecta/CSM
impact but their contributions are likely to be small. For the case of a CSM-IR
echo, we infer a dust mass of as little as 0.036 M(solar) with a corresponding
CSM mass of 3.6(0.01/r(dg))M(solar) where r(dg) is the dust-to-gas mass ratio.
Such a CSM would have resulted from episodic mass loss whose rate declined
significantly about 28,000 years ago. Alternatively, an IR echo from a
surrounding, dense, dusty molecular cloud might also have been responsible for
the fading component. Either way, this is the first time that an IR echo has
been clearly identified in a Type IIP supernova. We find no evidence for or
against the proposal that Type IIP supernovae produce large amounts of dust via
grain condensation in the ejecta. However, within the CSM-IR echo scenario, the
mass of dust derived implies that the progenitors of the most common of
core-collapse supernovae may make an important contribution to the universal

A Spitzer Space Telescope Study of SN 2003gd: Still No Direct Evidence that Core-Collapse Supernovae are Major Dust Factories
We present a new, detailed analysis of late-time mid-infrared (IR)
observations of the Type II-P supernova (SN) 2003gd. At about 16 months after
the explosion, the mid-IR flux is consistent with emission from 4 x 10^(-5)
M(solar) of newly condensed dust in the ejecta. At 22 months emission from
point-like sources close to the SN position was detected at 8 microns and 24
microns. By 42 months the 24 micron flux had faded. Considerations of
luminosity and source size rule out the ejecta of SN 2003gd as the main origin
of the emission at 22 months. A possible alternative explanation for the
emission at this later epoch is an IR echo from pre-existing circumstellar or
interstellar dust. We conclude that, contrary to the claim of Sugerman et al.
(2006, Science, 313, 196), the mid-IR emission from SN 2003gd does not support
the presence of 0.02 M(solar) of newly formed dust in the ejecta. There is, as

The VISIR+ Project – Helping Contextualize Math in an Engineering Course
The long-term goal of engineering education is to prepare students to work as engineers. Being a practical profession, laboratories play a crucial role in illustrating concepts and principles as well as improving technical skills. In the last decades the use of online resources (simulators and remote labs) has been growing, either as a complementary and/or as an alternative way of developing experimental competences. In the scope of the VISIR+ Project, this work presents the first results of a didactical implementation using simultaneously the remote laboratory VISIR (Virtual Instrument Systems in Reality), simulation and calculus in a Math Course at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC). The type IIn supernova 1994W: evidence for the explosive ejection of a circumstellar envelope
We present and analyse spectra of the Type IIn supernova 1994W obtained
between 18 and 203 days after explosion. During the luminous phase (first 100
d) the line profiles are composed of three major components: (i) narrow P-Cygni
lines with the absorption minima at -700 km/s; (ii) broad emission lines with
BVZI ~4000 km/s; and (iii) broad, smooth wings, most apparent in H-alpha. These
components are identified with an expanding circumstellar (CS) envelope,
shocked cool gas in the forward post-shock region, and multiple Thomson
scattering in the CS envelope, respectively. The absence of broad P-Cygni lines
from the supernova is the result of the formation of an optically thick, cool,
dense shell at the interface of the ejecta and the CS envelope. We model the
supernova deceleration and Thomson scattering wings to recover the density,
radial extent and Thomson optical depth of the CS envelope during the first
month. We reproduce the light curve with a hydrodynamical model and find it to
be powered by a combination of internal energy leakage after the explosion of
an extended pre-supernova (~10^15 cm) and luminosity from circumstellar
interaction. We recover the pre-explosion kinematics of the CS envelope: it is
close to homologous expansion with outer velocity ~1100 km/s and a kinematic
age of ~1.5 yr. The CS envelope's high mass and kinetic energy, combined with
its small age, strongly suggest that the CS envelope was explosively ejected

Modulation of presynaptic plasticity and learning by the H-ras/extracellular signal-regulated kinase/synapsin I signaling pathway
Molecular and cellular studies of the mechanisms underlying mammalian learning and memory have focused almost exclusively on
postsynaptic function. We now reveal an experience-dependent presynaptic mechanism that modulates learning and synaptic plasticity
in mice. Consistent with a presynapticfunctionfor endogenous H-ras/extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) signaling, we observed
that, under normal physiologic conditions in wild-type mice, hippocampus-dependent learning stimulated the ERK-dependent phosphorylation
of synapsin I, and MEK (MAP kinase kinase)/ERK inhibition selectively decreased the frequency of miniature EPSCs. By
generating transgenic mice expressing a constitutively active form of H-ras (H-rasG12V), which is abundantly localized in axon terminals,
we were able to increase the ERK-dependent phosphorylation of synapsin I. This resulted in several presynaptic changes, including a
higher density of docked neurotransmitter vesiclesin glutamatergicterminals, anincreasedfrequency of miniature EPSCs, andincreased
paired-pulse facilitation. In addition, we observed facilitated neurotransmitter release selectively during high-frequency activity with
consequent increases in long-term potentiation. Moreover, these mice showed dramatic enhancements in hippocampus-dependent
learning. Importantly, deletion of synapsin I, an exclusively presynaptic protein, blocked the enhancements of learning, presynaptic
plasticity, and long-term potentiation. Together with previous invertebrate studies, these results demonstrate that presynaptic plasticity
represents an important evolutionarily conserved mechanism for modulating learning and memory
SN 2008S: an electron capture SN from a super-AGB progenitor?
We present comprehensive photometric and spectroscopic observations of the
faint transient SN 2008S discovered in NGC 6946. SN 2008S exhibited slow
photometric evolution and almost no spectral variability during the first nine
months, implying a high density CS medium. The light curve is similar in shape
to that of SN 1998S and SN 1979C, although significantly fainter at maximum
light. Our quasi-bolometric lightcurve extends to 300 days and shows a tail
phase decay rate consistent with that of ^{56}Co. We propose that this is
evidence for an explosion and formation of ^{56}Ni (0.0015 +/- 0.0004 M_Sun).
The large MIR flux detected shortly after explosion can be explained by a light
echo from pre-exisiting dust. The late NIR flux excess is plausibly due to a
combination of warm newly-formed ejecta dust together with shock-heated dust in
the CS environment. We reassess the progenitor object detected previously in
Spitzer archive images, supplementing this discussion with a model of the MIR
spectral energy distribution. This supports the idea of a dusty, optically
thick shell around SN 2008S with an inner radius of nearly 90AU and outer
radius of 450AU, and an inferred heating source of 3000 K and luminosity of L ~
10^{4.6} L_Sun. The combination of our monitoring data and the evidence from
the progenitor analysis leads us to support the scenario of a weak electron
capture supernova explosion in a super-AGB progenitor star (of initial mass 6-8
M_sun) embedded within a thick CS gaseous envelope. We suggest that all of main
properties of the electron capture SN phenomenon are observed in SN 2008S and

Quality of life of palliative chemotherapy naive patients with advanced adenocarcinoma of the stomach or esophagogastric junction treated with irinotecan combined with 5-fluorouracil and folinic acid: results of a randomised phase III trial

Patients with measurable or evaluable advanced gastric cancer received IF weekly for 6/7 weeks or CF q4 weeks. QL was assessed using the EORTC QLQ-C30 at baseline, subsequently every 8 weeks until progression and thereafter every 3 months until death. The QL data were analysed using several statistical methods including summary measures and pattern-mixture modelling. A total of 333 patients were randomised and treated (IF 170, CF 163). The time-to-progression for IF and CF was 5.0 and 4.2 months (P = 0.088), respectively. The overall compliance rates for QL questionnaire completion were 60 and 56% in the IF and CF arms, respectively. Significant treatment differences were observed for the physical functioning scale (P = 0.024), nausea\vomiting (P = 0.001) and EQ-5D thermometer (P = 0.020) in favour of the IF treatment arm. There was a trend in favour of IF over CF in time-to-progression. The IF group also demonstrated a better safety profile than CF and a better QL on a number of multi-item scales, suggesting that IF offers an alternative first-line platinum-free treatment option for advanced gastric cancer.Amer Soc Clin Onco
Reconstruction of the gravitational wave signal during the Virgo science runs and independent validation with a photon calibrator
The Virgo detector is a kilometer-scale interferometer for gravitational wave
detection located near Pisa (Italy). About 13 months of data were accumulated
during four science runs (VSR1, VSR2, VSR3 and VSR4) between May 2007 and
September 2011, with increasing sensitivity.
In this paper, the method used to reconstruct, in the range 10 Hz-10 kHz, the
gravitational wave strain time series from the detector signals is
described. The standard consistency checks of the reconstruction are discussed
and used to estimate the systematic uncertainties of the signal as a
function of frequency. Finally, an independent setup, the photon calibrator, is
described and used to validate the reconstructed signal and the
associated uncertainties.
The uncertainties of the time series are estimated to be 8% in
amplitude. The uncertainty of the phase of is 50 mrad at 10 Hz with a
frequency dependence following a delay of 8 s at high frequency. A bias
lower than and depending on the sky direction of the GW is

Wild chimeras: Enthusiasm and intellectual virtue in Kant
Kant typically is not identified with the tradition of virtue epistemology. Although he may not be a virtue epistemologist in a strict sense, I suggest that intellectual virtues and vices play a key role in his epistemology. Specifically, Kant identifies a serious intellectual vice that threatens to undermine reason, namely enthusiasm (Schwärmerei). Enthusiasts become so enamored with their own thinking that they refuse to subject reason to self‐critique. The particular danger of enthusiasm is that reason colludes in its own destruction: Enthusiasm occurs when self‐conceit and reason\u27s desire to transcend its boundaries mutually reinforce each other. I conclude by sketching an account of Kantian intellectual virtue that is consistent with Kantian moral virtue
