Control Systems: an Application to a High Energy Physics Experiment (COMPASS)
The Detector Control System (DCS) of the COMPASS experiment at CERN is presented. The experiment has a high level of complexity and flexibility and a long time of operation, that constitute a challenge for its full monitorisation and control. A strategy to use a limited number of standardised, cost-effective, industrial solutions of hardware and software was pursued. When such solutions were not available or could not be used, customised solutions were developed.Peer Reviewe
Dead or alive? Implications of the muon anomalous magnetic moment for 3-3-1 models
IndexaciĂłn: Scopus. We have witnessed a persistent puzzling anomaly in the muon magnetic moment that cannot be accounted for in the Standard Model even considering the existing large hadronic uncertainties. A new measurement is forthcoming, and it might give rise to a 5Ï claim for physics beyond the Standard Model. Motivated by it, we explore the implications of this new result to five models based on the SU(3)CĂSU(3)LĂU(1)N gauge symmetry and put our conclusions into perspective with LHC bounds. We show that previous conclusions found in the context of such models change if there are more than one heavy particle running in the loop. Moreover, having in mind the projected precision aimed by the g-2 experiment at FERMILAB, we place lower mass bounds on the particles that contribute to muon anomalous magnetic moment assuming the anomaly is otherwise resolved. Lastly, we discuss how these models could accommodate such anomaly in agreement with current bounds. © 2020 The Author(s)

Possible Gauge Theoretic Origin for Quark-Lepton Complementarity
Similarity between the weak interaction properties of quarks and leptons has
led to suggestions that the origin of lepton mixing angles may be related to
those of quarks. In this paper, we present a gauge model based on group that leads to a new form for the quark
lepton complementarity which predicts the solar neutrino mixing angle in terms
of the Cabibbo angle for the case of inverted mass hierarchy for neutrinos. We
also indicate how these ideas can be implemented in an inspired
trinification model, which is more
closely allied to string theory by the AdS/CFT correspondence.Comment: 9 pages, latex, no figures; presentation improved; results unchanged;

Developing tools for the e-learning platform mathE
MathE (mathe.pixel-online.org) is an e-learning platform for higher education developed and implemented by a consortium of seven institutional partners from five European countries. The aim of the project is to enhance the quality of teaching and improve pedagogies and assessment methods by facilitating the identification of studentsâ gaps in Math, providing appropriate digital tools and promoting self-evaluation with immediate feedback. The Polytechnic Institute of Bragança (IPB), in Portugal, is one of the consortium members: sixteen of its teachers collaborate in the development of this platform, being responsible for thirteen of the topics/subtopics in which the platform is structured. Such topics cover a wide range of contents, from linear transformations to integration, from graph theory to probabilities. The articulation of the topics of the MathE collection corresponds to the canonic mathematics content of engineering, business and education degrees. The MathE platform is organized into three main sections: StudentÂŽs Assessment, MathE Library and Community of Practice. So far, IPB has already developed a collection of around 800 questions for the studentÂŽs assessment section and is currently developing the MathE Library. More than 350 students from IPB are using the MathE platform; some offered as volunteers, whose role is testing the behavior of the platform as well as looking for bugs and other details that require improvement, while others are already using the platform in their study. The feedback received up until now is quite encouraging.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
ImpressĂ”es foliares pleistocenas de Malvaceae na ĂĄrea de abrangĂȘncia do Aproveitamento HidroelĂ©trico Jirau, RondĂŽnia, Brasil
This paper aims to describe the morphology and taxonomic identification of ten angiosperm leaf impressions collected in Rio Madeira Formation outcrop in the area from Jirau Hydroeletric Dam, found by the team of Paleontological Research, Monitoring and Rescue Program. Due to the preservation and based on morphology, the specimens were identified at the genus level. All specimens belong to the family Malvaceae, and nine specimens were identified as Luehea and one specimen belongs to the genus Theobroma. Two samples were taken from the layer below to the fossiliferous bed, in order to carry dating by method âAccelerator Mass Spectrometryâ (AMS C14). The dating pointed ages between 15.910 and 14.850 years calibrated BP. The genus reported here are common in current forest cover in the region of AHE Jirau, and their presences are also confirmed by palynological data obtained for the upper part of the Rio Madeira Formation.
Measurement of the top pair production cross section in 8 TeV proton-proton collisions using kinematic information in the lepton plus jets final state with ATLAS
A measurement is presented of the inclusive production
cross-section in collisions at a center-of-mass energy of TeV
using data collected by the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider.
The measurement was performed in the lepton+jets final state using a data set
corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb. The cross-section
was obtained using a likelihood discriminant fit and -jet identification was
used to improve the signal-to-background ratio. The inclusive
production cross-section was measured to be
pb assuming a top-quark mass of 172.5 GeV, in good agreement with the
theoretical prediction of pb. The production cross-section in the fiducial region
determined by the detector acceptance is also reported.Comment: Published version, 19 pages plus author list (35 pages total), 3
