Star Formation Rate Indicators in Wide-Field Infrared Survey Preliminary Release
With the goal of investigating the degree to which theMIR luminosity in
theWidefield Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) traces the SFR, we analyze 3.4,
4.6, 12 and 22 {\mu}m data in a sample of {\guillemotright} 140,000
star-forming galaxies or star-forming regions covering a wide range in
metallicity 7.66 < 12 + log(O/H) < 9.46, with redshift z < 0.4. These
star-forming galaxies or star-forming regions are selected by matching the WISE
Preliminary Release Catalog with the star-forming galaxy Catalog in SDSS DR8
provided by JHU/MPA 1.We study the relationship between the luminosity at 3.4,
4.6, 12 and 22 {\mu}m from WISE and H\alpha luminosity in SDSS DR8. From these
comparisons, we derive reference SFR indicators for use in our analysis. Linear
correlations between SFR and the 3.4, 4.6, 12 and 22 {\mu}m luminosity are
found, and calibrations of SFRs based on L(3.4), L(4.6), L(12) and L(22) are
proposed. The calibrations hold for galaxies with verified spectral
observations. The dispersion in the relation between 3.4, 4.6, 12 and 22 {\mu}m
luminosity and SFR relates to the galaxy's properties, such as 4000 {\deg}A
break and galaxy color.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure
The Complete Star Formation History of the Universe
The determination of the star-formation history of the Universe is a key goal
of modern cosmology, as it is crucial to our understanding of how structure in
the Universe forms and evolves. A picture has built up over recent years,
piece-by-piece, by observing young stars in distant galaxies at different times
in the past.
These studies indicated that the stellar birthrate peaked some 8 billion
years ago, and then declined by a factor of around ten to its present value.
Here we report on a new study which obtains the complete star formation history
by analysing the fossil record of the stellar populations of 96545 nearby
galaxies. Broadly, our results support those derived from high-redshift
galaxies elsewhere in the Universe. We find, however, that the peak of star
formation was more recent - around 5 billion years ago. Our study also shows
that the bigger the stellar mass of the galaxy, the earlier the stars were
formed. This striking result indicates a very different formation history for
high- and low-mass formation.Comment: Accepted by Nature. Press embargo until publishe
The characterisation of microsatellite markers reveals tetraploidy in the Greater Water Parsnip, Sium latifolium (Apiaceae).
BACKGROUND:
The Greater Water Parsnip, Sium latifolium (Apiaceae), is a marginal aquatic perennial currently endangered in England and consequently the focus of a number of conservation translocation projects. Microsatellite markers were developed for S. latifolium to facilitate comparison of genetic diversity and composition between natural and introduced populations.
RESULTS:
We selected 65 S. latifolium microsatellite (MiSeq) sequences and designed primer pairs for these. Primer sets were tested in 32 individuals. We found 15 polymorphic loci that amplified consistently. For the selected 15 loci, the number of alleles per locus ranged from 8 to 17. For all loci, S. latifolium individuals displayed up to four alleles indicating polyploidy in this species.
CONCLUSIONS:
These are the first microsatellite loci developed for S. latifolium and each individual displayed 1-4 alleles per locus, suggesting polyploidy in this species. These markers provide a valuable resource in evaluating the population genetic composition of this endangered species and thus will be useful for guiding conservation and future translocations of the species
Planck intermediate results. XLI. A map of lensing-induced B-modes
The secondary cosmic microwave background (CMB) -modes stem from the
post-decoupling distortion of the polarization -modes due to the
gravitational lensing effect of large-scale structures. These lensing-induced
-modes constitute both a valuable probe of the dark matter distribution and
an important contaminant for the extraction of the primary CMB -modes from
inflation. Planck provides accurate nearly all-sky measurements of both the
polarization -modes and the integrated mass distribution via the
reconstruction of the CMB lensing potential. By combining these two data
products, we have produced an all-sky template map of the lensing-induced
-modes using a real-space algorithm that minimizes the impact of sky masks.
The cross-correlation of this template with an observed (primordial and
secondary) -mode map can be used to measure the lensing -mode power
spectrum at multipoles up to . In particular, when cross-correlating with
the -mode contribution directly derived from the Planck polarization maps,
we obtain lensing-induced -mode power spectrum measurement at a significance
level of , which agrees with the theoretical expectation derived
from the Planck best-fit CDM model. This unique nearly all-sky
secondary -mode template, which includes the lensing-induced information
from intermediate to small () angular scales, is
delivered as part of the Planck 2015 public data release. It will be
particularly useful for experiments searching for primordial -modes, such as
BICEP2/Keck Array or LiteBIRD, since it will enable an estimate to be made of
the lensing-induced contribution to the measured total CMB -modes.Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures; Accepted for publication in A&A; The B-mode map

Use of antidepressant medications in relation to the incidence of breast cancer
Although associations have been reported between antidepressant use and risk of breast cancer, the findings have been inconsistent. We conducted a population-based caseâcontrol study among women enrolled in Group Health Cooperative (GHC), a health maintenance organization in Washington State. Women with a first primary breast cancer diagnosed between 1990 and 2001 were identified (N=2904) and five controls were selected for each case (N=14396). Information on antidepressant use was ascertained through the GHC pharmacy database and on breast cancer risk factors and screening mammograms from GHC records. Prior to one year before diagnosis of breast cancer, about 20% of cases and controls had used tricyclic antidepressants (adjusted odds ratio=1.06, 95% CI 0.94â1.19) and 6% of each group had used selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (OR=0.98, 95% CI 0.80â1.18). There also were no differences between cases and controls with regard to the number of prescriptions filled or the timing of use. Taken as a whole, the results from this and other studies to date do not indicate an altered risk of breast cancer associated with the use of antidepressants overall, by class, or for individual antidepressants
Measurement of the top quark mass using the matrix element technique in dilepton final states
We present a measurement of the top quark mass in ppÂŻ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. The data were collected by the D0 experiment corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.7ââfbâ1. The matrix element technique is applied to ttÂŻ events in the final state containing leptons (electrons or muons) with high transverse momenta and at least two jets. The calibration of the jet energy scale determined in the lepton+jets final state of ttÂŻ decays is applied to jet energies. This correction provides a substantial reduction in systematic uncertainties. We obtain a top quark mass of mt=173.93Âą1.84ââGeV
Effective Rheology of Bubbles Moving in a Capillary Tube
We calculate the average volumetric flux versus pressure drop of bubbles
moving in a single capillary tube with varying diameter, finding a square-root
relation from mapping the flow equations onto that of a driven overdamped
pendulum. The calculation is based on a derivation of the equation of motion of
a bubble train from considering the capillary forces and the entropy production
associated with the viscous flow. We also calculate the configurational
probability of the positions of the bubbles.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur
Search for new physics with same-sign isolated dilepton events with jets and missing transverse energy
A search for new physics is performed in events with two same-sign isolated
leptons, hadronic jets, and missing transverse energy in the final state. The
analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of
4.98 inverse femtobarns produced in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of
7 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. This constitutes a factor of
140 increase in integrated luminosity over previously published results. The
observed yields agree with the standard model predictions and thus no evidence
for new physics is found. The observations are used to set upper limits on
possible new physics contributions and to constrain supersymmetric models. To
facilitate the interpretation of the data in a broader range of new physics
scenarios, information on the event selection, detector response, and
efficiencies is provided.Comment: Published in Physical Review Letter
Performance of CMS muon reconstruction in pp collision events at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
The performance of muon reconstruction, identification, and triggering in CMS
has been studied using 40 inverse picobarns of data collected in pp collisions
at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV at the LHC in 2010. A few benchmark sets of selection
criteria covering a wide range of physics analysis needs have been examined.
For all considered selections, the efficiency to reconstruct and identify a
muon with a transverse momentum pT larger than a few GeV is above 95% over the
whole region of pseudorapidity covered by the CMS muon system, abs(eta) < 2.4,
while the probability to misidentify a hadron as a muon is well below 1%. The
efficiency to trigger on single muons with pT above a few GeV is higher than
90% over the full eta range, and typically substantially better. The overall
momentum scale is measured to a precision of 0.2% with muons from Z decays. The
transverse momentum resolution varies from 1% to 6% depending on pseudorapidity
for muons with pT below 100 GeV and, using cosmic rays, it is shown to be
better than 10% in the central region up to pT = 1 TeV. Observed distributions
of all quantities are well reproduced by the Monte Carlo simulation.Comment: Replaced with published version. Added journal reference and DO
