High-resolution x-ray study of the nematic - smectic-A and smectic-A - smectic-C transitions in 8barS5-aerosil gels
The effects of dispersed aerosil nanoparticles on two of the phase
transitions of the thermotropic liquid crystal material
4-n-pentylphenylthiol-4'-n-octyloxybenzoate 8barS5 have been studied using
high-resolution x-ray diffraction techniques. The aerosils hydrogen bond
together to form a gel which imposes a weak quenched disorder on the liquid
crystal. The smectic-A fluctuations are well characterized by a two-component
line shape representing thermal and random-field contributions. An elaboration
on this line shape is required to describe the fluctuations in the smectic-C
phase; specifically the effect of the tilt on the wave-vector dependence of the
thermal fluctuations must be explicitly taken into account. Both the magnitude
and the temperature dependence of the smectic-C tilt order parameter are
observed to be unaffected by the disorder. This may be a consequence of the
large bare smectic correlation length in the direction of modulation for this
transition. These results show that the understanding developed for the nematic
to smectic-A transition for octylcyanobiphenyl (8CB) and octyloxycyanobiphenyl
(8OCB) liquid crystals with quenched disorder can be extended to quite

Poor nutritional status is associated with other geriatric domain impairments and adverse postoperative outcomes in onco-geriatric surgical patients – a multicentre cohort study
Background: Nutritional status (NS), though frequently affected in onco-geriatric patients, is no standard
part of a geriatric assessment. The aim of this study was to analyse the association between a preoperatively
impaired NS and geriatric domain impairments and adverse postoperative outcomes in onco-geriatric surgical patients.
Methods: 309 patients ≥70 years undergoing surgery for solid tumours were prospectively recruited. Nine screening tools were preoperatively administered as part of a geriatric assessment. NS was based on BMI, weight loss and food intake. Odds ratio’s (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) were estimated using logistic regression analysis. The occurrence of 30-day adverse postoperative outcomes was recorded.
Results: At a median age of 76 years, 107 patients (34.6%) had an impaired NS. Decreased performance
status and depression were associated with an impaired NS, when adjusted for tumour characteristics and comorbidities (ORPS>1 3.46; 95%CI 1.56-7.67. ORGDS>5 2.11; 95%CI 1.05-4.26). An impaired NS was an independent predictor for major complications (OR 3.3; 95%CI 1.6-6.8). Ten out of 11 patients who deceased had an impaired NS.
Conclusion: An impaired NS is prevalent in onco-geriatric patients considered to be fit for surgery. It is associated with decreased performance status and depression. An impaired NS is a predictor for adverse postoperative outcomes. NS should be incorporated in a geriatric assessment
The Influence of Age and Sex on Genetic Associations with Adult Body Size and Shape : A Large-Scale Genome-Wide Interaction Study
Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified more than 100 genetic variants contributing to BMI, a measure of body size, or waist-to-hip ratio (adjusted for BMI, WHRadjBMI), a measure of body shape. Body size and shape change as people grow older and these changes differ substantially between men and women. To systematically screen for age-and/or sex-specific effects of genetic variants on BMI and WHRadjBMI, we performed meta-analyses of 114 studies (up to 320,485 individuals of European descent) with genome-wide chip and/or Metabochip data by the Genetic Investigation of Anthropometric Traits (GIANT) Consortium. Each study tested the association of up to similar to 2.8M SNPs with BMI and WHRadjBMI in four strata (men 50y, women 50y) and summary statistics were combined in stratum-specific meta-analyses. We then screened for variants that showed age-specific effects (G x AGE), sex-specific effects (G x SEX) or age-specific effects that differed between men and women (G x AGE x SEX). For BMI, we identified 15 loci (11 previously established for main effects, four novel) that showed significant (FDR= 50y). No sex-dependent effects were identified for BMI. For WHRadjBMI, we identified 44 loci (27 previously established for main effects, 17 novel) with sex-specific effects, of which 28 showed larger effects in women than in men, five showed larger effects in men than in women, and 11 showed opposite effects between sexes. No age-dependent effects were identified for WHRadjBMI. This is the first genome-wide interaction meta-analysis to report convincing evidence of age-dependent genetic effects on BMI. In addition, we confirm the sex-specificity of genetic effects on WHRadjBMI. These results may providefurther insights into the biology that underlies weight change with age or the sexually dimorphism of body shape.Peer reviewe
Reducing the environmental impact of surgery on a global scale: systematic review and co-prioritization with healthcare workers in 132 countries
Background
Healthcare cannot achieve net-zero carbon without addressing operating theatres. The aim of this study was to prioritize feasible interventions to reduce the environmental impact of operating theatres.
Methods
This study adopted a four-phase Delphi consensus co-prioritization methodology. In phase 1, a systematic review of published interventions and global consultation of perioperative healthcare professionals were used to longlist interventions. In phase 2, iterative thematic analysis consolidated comparable interventions into a shortlist. In phase 3, the shortlist was co-prioritized based on patient and clinician views on acceptability, feasibility, and safety. In phase 4, ranked lists of interventions were presented by their relevance to high-income countries and low–middle-income countries.
Results
In phase 1, 43 interventions were identified, which had low uptake in practice according to 3042 professionals globally. In phase 2, a shortlist of 15 intervention domains was generated. In phase 3, interventions were deemed acceptable for more than 90 per cent of patients except for reducing general anaesthesia (84 per cent) and re-sterilization of ‘single-use’ consumables (86 per cent). In phase 4, the top three shortlisted interventions for high-income countries were: introducing recycling; reducing use of anaesthetic gases; and appropriate clinical waste processing. In phase 4, the top three shortlisted interventions for low–middle-income countries were: introducing reusable surgical devices; reducing use of consumables; and reducing the use of general anaesthesia.
Conclusion
This is a step toward environmentally sustainable operating environments with actionable interventions applicable to both high– and low–middle–income countries
Functional enhancement of whey protein concentrate and egg by partial denaturation and co-processing

WE and EY underwent a combined phospholipase PLA2 and controlled heat treatment (WE2 and EY2) while WPC was partially-denatured via controlled heating (pdWPC). WE2 and EY2 samples were mixed with pdWPC and were also control-heated (h) with WPC. WE2-WPC(h) foams proved more stable than their untreated controls. WE2, EY2 and EY2-pdWPC showed higher emulsifying properties than their untreated controls. pdWPC, EY2 and EY2-WPC(h) hydrogels proved more viscoelastic than their untreated controls. EY2 and EY2-WPC(h) displayed an additional 45 kDa protein band, which could correspond to surface-active apoproteins released from lipoproteins. Autonomous analysis to identify bijels from two-dimensional images
Bicontinuous interfacially jammed emulsion gels (bijels) are novel composite materials that can be challenging to manufacture. As a step towards automating production, we have developed a machine learning tool to classify fabrication attempts. We use training and testing data in the form of confocal images from both successful and unsuccessful attempts at bijel fabrication. We then apply machine learning techniques to this data in order to classify whether an image is a bijel or a non-bijel. Our principal approach is to process the images to find their autocorrelation function and structure factor, and from these functions we identify variables that can be used for training a supervised machine learning model to identify a bijel image. We are able to categorise images with reasonable accuracies of 85.4% and 87.5% for two different approaches. We find that using both the liquid and particle channels helps to achieve optimal performance and that successful classification relies on the bijel samples sharing a characteristic length scale. Our second approach is to classify the shapes of the liquid domains directly; the shape descriptors are then used to classify fabrication attempts via a decision tree. We have used an adaptive design approach to find an image pre-processing step that yields the optimal classification results. Again, we find that the characteristic length scale of the images is crucial in performing the classification
