    STM observation of electronic wave interference effect in finite-sized graphite with dislocation-network structures

    Superperiodic patterns near a step edge were observed by STM on several-layer-thick graphite sheets on a highly oriented pyrolitic graphite substrate, where a dislocation network is generated at the interface between the graphite overlayer and the substrate. Triangular- and rhombic-shaped periodic patterns whose periodicities are around 100 nm were observed on the upper terrace near the step edge. In contrast, only outlines of the patterns similar to those on the upper terrace were observed on the lower terrace. On the upper terrace, their geometrical patterns gradually disappeared and became similar to those on the lower terrace without any changes of their periodicity in increasing a bias voltage. By assuming a periodic scattering potential at the interface due to dislocations, the varying corrugation amplitudes of the patterns can be understood as changes in LDOS as a result of the beat of perturbed and unperturbed waves, i.e. the interference in an overlayer. The observed changes in the image depending on an overlayer height and a bias voltage can be explained by the electronic wave interference in the ultra-thin overlayer distorted under the influence of dislocation-network structures.Comment: 8 pages; 6 figures; Paper which a part of cond-mat/0311068 is disscussed in detai

    Restoration of seagrass habitat leads to rapid recovery of coastal ecosystem services

    There have been increasing attempts to reverse habitat degradation through active restoration, but few largescale successes are reported to guide these efforts. Here, we report outcomes from a unique and very successful seagrass restoration project: Since 1999, over 70 million seeds of a marine angiosperm, eelgrass (Zostera marina), have been broadcast into mid-western Atlantic coastal lagoons, leading to recovery of 3612 ha of seagrass. Well-developed meadows now foster productive and diverse animal communities, sequester substantial stocks of carbon and nitrogen, and have prompted a parallel restoration for bay scallops (Argopecten irradians). Restored ecosystem services are approaching historic levels, but we also note that managers value services differently today than they did nine decades ago, emphasizing regulating in addition to provisioning services. Thus, this study serves as a blueprint for restoring and maintaining healthy ecosystems to safeguard multiple benefits, including co-benefits that may emerge as management priorities over time

    The Effects of Acute and Chronic Selective Phosphodiesterase 1 Inhibition on Smooth Muscle Cell-Associated Aging Features

    Age-related cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remain among the leading global causes of death, and vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) remodeling plays an essential role in its pathology. Reduced NO-cGMP pathway signaling is a major feature and pathogenic mechanism underlying vasodilator dysfunction. Recently, we identified phosphodiesterase (PDE) 1, an enzyme that hydrolyzes and inactivates the cyclic nucleotides cAMP and cGMP, and thereby provides a potential treatment target for restoring age-related vascular dysfunction due to aging of VSMC. Based on this hypothesis, we here tested the effects of PDE1 inhibition in a model of SMC-specific accelerated aging mice. SMC-KO and their WT littermates received either vehicle or the PDE1 inhibitor lenrispodun for 8 weeks. Vascular function was measured both in vivo (Laser Doppler technique) and ex vivo (organ bath). Moreover, we deployed UV irradiation in cell culture experiments to model accelerated aging in an in vitro situation. SMC-KO mice display a pronounced loss of vasodilator function in the isolated aorta, the cutaneous microvasculature, and mesenteric arteries. Ex vivo, in isolated vascular tissue, we found that PDE1 inhibition with lenrispodun improves vasodilation, while no improvement was observed in isolated aorta taken from mice after chronic treatment in vivo. However, during lenrispodun treatment in vivo, an enhanced microvascular response in association with upregulated cGMP levels was seen. Further, chronic lenrispodun treatment decreased TNF-α and IL-10 plasma levels while the elevated level of IL-6 in SMC-KO mice remained unchanged after treatment. PDE1 and senescence markers, p16 and p21, were increased in both SMC-KO aorta and cultured human VSMC in which DNA was damaged by ultraviolet irradiation. This increase was lowered by chronic lenrispodun. In contrast, lenrispodun increased the level of PDE1A in both situations. In conclusion, we demonstrated that PDE1 inhibition may be therapeutically useful in reversing aspects of age-related VSMC dysfunction by potentiating NO-cGMP signaling, preserving microvascular function, and decreasing senescence. Yet, after chronic treatment, the effects of PDE1 inhibition might be counteracted by the interplay between differential PDE1A and C expression. These results warrant further pharmacodynamic profiling of PDE enzyme regulation during chronic PDE1 inhibitor treatment

    Molecular clustering of genes related to the atopic syndrome

    Background: The atopic syndrome consists of heterogeneous manifestations, in which multiple associated genetic loci have recently been identified. It is hypothesized that immune dysregulation plays a role in the pathogenesis. In primary immunodeficiency diseases (PIDs), which are often monogenic immunodysregulation disorders, the atopic syndrome is a frequently occurring comorbidity. Based on the genetic defects in PIDs, novel gene/pathway-targeted therapies have been evaluated, which could be relevant in the atopic syndrome as well. Therefore, we aimed to define subclasses within the atopic syndrome based on the expression profiles of immune cell lineages of healthy mice. Methods: Overlap between known atopy-related genes as described in the Human Gene Mutation Database and disease-causing genes of monogenic PIDs was evaluated. Clusters of atopy-related genes were based on the overlap in their co-expressed genes using the gene expression profiles of immune cell lineages of healthy mice from the Immunological Genome Project. We analyzed pathways involved in the atopic syndrome using Ingenuity Pathway Analysis. Results: Twenty-two (5.3%) genes were overlapping between the atopy-related genes (n = 160) and PID-related genes (n = 278). We identified seven distinct clusters of atopy-related genes. Functional pathway analysis of all atopy-related genes showed relevance of T helper cell-mediated pathways. Conclusions: This study shows a model to define clusters within the atopic syndrome based on gene expression profiles of immune cell lineages. Our results support the hypothesis that both genetic mechanisms and immune dysregulation play a role in the pathogenesis. It also opens up the possibility for novel therapeutic targets and a more tailored approach towards personalized medicine

    Dark Energy and Gravity

    I review the problem of dark energy focusing on the cosmological constant as the candidate and discuss its implications for the nature of gravity. Part 1 briefly overviews the currently popular `concordance cosmology' and summarises the evidence for dark energy. It also provides the observational and theoretical arguments in favour of the cosmological constant as the candidate and emphasises why no other approach really solves the conceptual problems usually attributed to the cosmological constant. Part 2 describes some of the approaches to understand the nature of the cosmological constant and attempts to extract the key ingredients which must be present in any viable solution. I argue that (i)the cosmological constant problem cannot be satisfactorily solved until gravitational action is made invariant under the shift of the matter lagrangian by a constant and (ii) this cannot happen if the metric is the dynamical variable. Hence the cosmological constant problem essentially has to do with our (mis)understanding of the nature of gravity. Part 3 discusses an alternative perspective on gravity in which the action is explicitly invariant under the above transformation. Extremizing this action leads to an equation determining the background geometry which gives Einstein's theory at the lowest order with Lanczos-Lovelock type corrections.     Measurement of the Charged Multiplicities in b, c and Light Quark Events from Z0 Decays

    Average charged multiplicities have been measured separately in bb, cc and light quark (u,d,su,d,s) events from Z0Z^0 decays measured in the SLD experiment. Impact parameters of charged tracks were used to select enriched samples of bb and light quark events, and reconstructed charmed mesons were used to select cc quark events. We measured the charged multiplicities: nˉuds=20.21±0.10(stat.)±0.22(syst.)\bar{n}_{uds} = 20.21 \pm 0.10 (\rm{stat.})\pm 0.22(\rm{syst.}), nˉc=21.28±0.46(stat.)0.36+0.41(syst.)\bar{n}_{c} = 21.28 \pm 0.46(\rm{stat.}) ^{+0.41}_{-0.36}(\rm{syst.}) nˉb=23.14±0.10(stat.)0.37+0.38(syst.)\bar{n}_{b} = 23.14 \pm 0.10(\rm{stat.}) ^{+0.38}_{-0.37}(\rm{syst.}), from which we derived the differences between the total average charged multiplicities of cc or bb quark events and light quark events: Δnˉc=1.07±0.47(stat.)0.30+0.36(syst.)\Delta \bar{n}_c = 1.07 \pm 0.47(\rm{stat.})^{+0.36}_{-0.30}(\rm{syst.}) and Δnˉb=2.93±0.14(stat.)0.29+0.30(syst.)\Delta \bar{n}_b = 2.93 \pm 0.14(\rm{stat.})^{+0.30}_{-0.29}(\rm{syst.}). We compared these measurements with those at lower center-of-mass energies and with perturbative QCD predictions.     Time-integrated luminosity recorded by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II e+e- collider

    This article is the Preprint version of the final published artcile which can be accessed at the link below.We describe a measurement of the time-integrated luminosity of the data collected by the BABAR experiment at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e- collider at the ϒ(4S), ϒ(3S), and ϒ(2S) resonances and in a continuum region below each resonance. We measure the time-integrated luminosity by counting e+e-→e+e- and (for the ϒ(4S) only) e+e-→μ+μ- candidate events, allowing additional photons in the final state. We use data-corrected simulation to determine the cross-sections and reconstruction efficiencies for these processes, as well as the major backgrounds. Due to the large cross-sections of e+e-→e+e- and e+e-→μ+μ-, the statistical uncertainties of the measurement are substantially smaller than the systematic uncertainties. The dominant systematic uncertainties are due to observed differences between data and simulation, as well as uncertainties on the cross-sections. For data collected on the ϒ(3S) and ϒ(2S) resonances, an additional uncertainty arises due to ϒ→e+e-X background. For data collected off the ϒ resonances, we estimate an additional uncertainty due to time dependent efficiency variations, which can affect the short off-resonance runs.     Measurement of the B0-anti-B0-Oscillation Frequency with Inclusive Dilepton Events

    The B0B^0-Bˉ0\bar B^0 oscillation frequency has been measured with a sample of 23 million \B\bar B pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric B Factory at SLAC. In this sample, we select events in which both B mesons decay semileptonically and use the charge of the leptons to identify the flavor of each B meson. A simultaneous fit to the decay time difference distributions for opposite- and same-sign dilepton events gives Δmd=0.493±0.012(stat)±0.009(syst)\Delta m_d = 0.493 \pm 0.012{(stat)}\pm 0.009{(syst)} ps1^{-1}.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure, submitted to Physical Review Letter

    Search for single top quarks in the tau+jets channel using 4.8 fb1^{-1} of ppˉp\bar{p} collision data

    We present the first direct search for single top quark production using tau leptons. The search is based on 4.8 fb1^{-1} of integrated luminosity collected in ppˉp\bar{p} collisions at s\sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We select events with a final state including an isolated tau lepton, missing transverse energy, two or three jets, one or two of them bb tagged. We use a multivariate technique to discriminate signal from background. The number of events observed in data in this final state is consistent with the signal plus background expectation. We set in the tau+jets channel an upper limit on the single top quark cross section of \TauLimObs pb at the 95% C.L. This measurement allows a gain of 4% in expected sensitivity for the observation of single top production when combining it with electron+jets and muon+jets channels already published by the D0 collaboration with 2.3 fb1^{-1} of data. We measure a combined cross section of \SuperCombineXSall pb, which is the most precise measurement to date.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figure

    Measurement of Z/gamma*+jet+X angular distributions in ppbar collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV

    We present the first measurements at a hadron collider of differential cross sections for Z+jet+X production in delta phi(Z, jet), |delta y(Z, jet)| and |y_boost(Z, jet)|. Vector boson production in association with jets is an excellent probe of QCD and constitutes the main background to many small cross section processes, such as associated Higgs production. These measurements are crucial tests of the predictions of perturbative QCD and current event generators, which have varied success in describing the data. Using these measurements as inputs in tuning event generators will increase the experimental sensitivity to rare signals.Comment: Published in Physics Letters B 682 (2010), pp. 370-380. 15 pages, 6 figure
