In vitro Study of the Survival, Reproduction and Morphology of Daphnia pulicaria irradiated with a Low Energy Laser
Articulo científico en open accesDaphnia is a genus of crustaceans that is representative of freshwater communities. The species exhibit a high sensitivity to a wide range of toxic compounds so that they have been used internationally as biomonitors in toxicity tests to evaluate ecosystem conditions such as water quality. It is also a model genus in genetics, epigenetics and reproductive ecology. In this work, we used Daphnia pulicaria as a model to measure the effects of low-energy laser irradiation on survival, reproduction, and morphology variables of parental organisms and their offspring. We used (1) a single clone line of organisms to eliminate interindividual genetic variability; (2) individuals from more than 50 generations after the clone line was established, and offspring from the third brood onwards to dissipate maternal and epigenetic effects, and (3) neonates, those individuals of the species that have less than 48 hours of life, because they are the most sensitive stage to optical stimuli. We analyzed number of deaths, longevity, age at first reproduction, number of offspring per week, number of total offspring during all their life cycle, body size, size of the antennules, and length of the apical spine of the 4th and 5th brood of the irradiated individuals, who were exposed to a blue laser stimulus of 405 nm for 25 minutes with a power of 40 mW at a distance of 50 cm, compared to those of the control (non-irradiated) group
Uso de e-mental health para el seguimiento posterapia de pacientes con depresión en Colombia
ABSTARCT: Use of E-Mental Health for monitoring depressive patients in Colombia Depressive disorders affect people of all ages, they reduce the quality of life and are recurrent. The most recent reports of the Ministry of Health and
Social Protection establish between 12,1 and 13,1 % the prevalence of depression in the Colombian population. In recent years, the field of e-mental health has expanded rapidly and interventions based on communication and information technologies are being suggested as means to complement conventional mental health services. In this context, the research had as purpose to evaluate in Colombia the feasibility and
acceptability of the technological intervention called “Apoyo, Seguimiento y Control de Enfermedades a partir de Sistemas Operativos –ASCENSO”. A purposive sample of patients discharged from psychotherapeutic treatments was selected. The HPQ-9 was applied, the ASCENSO platform was implemented, and finally, semi-structured interviews were conducted with study participants. The results show a favorable opinion of the patients that participated, the difficulties of the mental health institutions to join a project like this and a sensible lack of e-mental health programs in Colombia.RESUMEN: Los trastornos depresivos afectan a personas de todas las edades, reducen la calidad de vida y son recurrentes. Los informes más recientes del Ministerio de Salud y Protección Social establecen entre 12,1 y 13,1 % la prevalencia de la depresión en la población colombiana. En los últimos años, el campo del e-mental health se ha expandido rápidamente y las intervenciones basadas en las tecnologías de información y comunicación (TIC) se sugieren cada vez más como medio para complementar la atención convencional de la salud mental. En este contexto, la investigación tuvo como propósito evaluar en Colombia la factibilidad de uso y aceptabilidad de la estrategia de intervención tecnológica “Apoyo, Seguimiento y Control de Enfermedades a partir de Sistemas Operativos – ASCENSO”. Fue seleccionada una muestra intencional de pacientes dados de alta de tratamientos psicoterapéuticos. Se aplicó el HPQ-9, se implementó la plataforma ASCENSO y se realizaron entrevistas semiestructuradas a los participantes. Los resultados señalan la opinión favorable que manifestaron los pacientes que se beneficiaron del proceso, las dificultades de las instituciones de salud
mental para vincularse a estos proyectos y una sensible ausencia de programas e-mental health en Colombia
Ultracool Field Brown Dwarf Candidates Selected at 4.5 microns
We have identified a sample of cool field brown dwarf candidates using IRAC
data from the Spitzer Deep, Wide-Field Survey (SDWFS). The candidates were
selected from 400,000 SDWFS sources with [4.5] <= 18.5 mag and required to have
[3.6]-[4.5] >= 1.5 and [4.5] - [8.0] <= 2.0 on the Vega system. The first color
requirement selects objects redder than all but a handful of presently known
brown dwarfs with spectral classes later than T7, while the second eliminates
14 probable reddened AGN. Optical detection of 4 of the remaining 18 sources
implies they are likely also AGN, leaving 14 brown dwarf candidates. For two of
the brightest candidates (SDWFS J143524.44+335334.6 and SDWFS
J143222.82+323746.5), the spectral energy distributions including near-infrared
detections suggest a spectral class of ~ T8. The proper motion is < 0.25 "/yr,
consistent with expectations for a luminosity inferred distance of >70 pc. The
reddest brown dwarf candidate (SDWFS J143356.62+351849.2) has [3.6] -
[4.5]=2.24 and H - [4.5] > 5.7, redder than any published brown dwarf in these
colors, and may be the first example of the elusive Y-dwarf spectral class.
Models from Burrows et al. (2003) predict larger numbers of cool brown dwarfs
should be found for a Chabrier (2003) mass function. Suppressing the model
[4.5] flux by a factor of two, as indicated by previous work, brings the
Burrows models and observations into reasonable agreement. The recently
launched Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) will probe a volume ~40x
larger and should find hundreds of brown dwarfs cooler than T7.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in the June 2010 issue

Detección molecular de Toxoplasma gondii en carnes para consumo humano en Ibagué, Colombia
Introduction: Toxoplasma gondii is a parasite with great zoonotic potential. It can infect a broad range of warm-blooded hosts (including livestock) and causes significant losses in the industry. In humans, it has been described as a pathogen in immunosuppressed people, it affects the fetus development in congenital infections, and is associated with various behavioral disorders in healthy people. Humans can acquire T. gondii by consuming undercooked, contaminated meat.Objective: To determine T. gondii positivity (currently unknown) in meat for human consumption (i.e., beef, chicken, and pork) in the city of Ibague, Colombia.Materials and methods: We used conventional nested PCR and the T. gondii B1 gene sequence as amplification target. We collected samples of meat (N=186) sold in the urban area of Ibagué (62 beef, 62 chicken, and 62 pork samples) and determined the T. gondii positivity percentage for each type of meat.Results: The study found an average of 18.8% positivity for all meat samples, pork having the highest percentage (22.5%; 14/62), followed by beef (19.3%; 12/62) and chicken (14.5%; 9/62). The best-amplified products were sequenced by macrogen and aligned with the B1 gene sequences in GenBank, thereby confirming their identity.Conclusions: This is the first study of T. gondii prevalence in meat for human consumption carried out in the city of Ibagué and the department of Tolima. All three types of meat sampled represent a risk for local human infectionIntroducción. Toxoplasma gondii es un parásito con gran potencial zoonótico que puede infectar un amplio rango de huéspedes de sangre caliente, incluidos los animales del sector pecuario, lo que causa pérdidas a la industria. En el humano, es patógeno en personas inmunosuprimidas y afecta el desarrollo del feto en infecciones congénitas. Además, se asocia con diversos trastornos del comportamiento en personas sanas. El humano puede adquirir T. gondii al consumir carnes contaminadas mal cocidas.Objetivo. Determinar la positividad de T. gondii en carnes de consumo humano (res, pollo y cerdo) en Ibagué, Colombia.Materiales y métodos. Se utilizó la PCR convencional anidada y la secuencia del gen B1 de T. gondii como blanco de amplificación. Se tomaron 186 muestras de carne comercializada en la zona urbana de Ibagué (62 de res, 62 de pollo y 62 de cerdo) y se obtuvo el porcentaje de positividad en cada tipo de carne evaluada.Resultados. Se encontró un porcentaje de positividad de 18,8 % en las muestras, siendo la carne de cerdo la del mayor porcentaje (22,5 %; 14/62), seguida por las muestras de carne de res (19,3 %; 12/62) y de pollo (14,5 %; 9/62). Los mejores productos amplificados fueron secuenciados en Macrogen, y alineados con las secuencias del gen B1 depositadas en el GenBank, con lo que se confirmó su identidad.Conclusiones. Este es el primer estudio sobre prevalencia de T. gondii en carnes para consumo humano en Ibagué y el departamento del Tolima. Se demostró que los tres tipos de carne representan un riesgo para la infección en humanos a nivel local
Angiocrine polyamine production regulates adiposity.
Reciprocal interactions between endothelial cells (ECs) and adipocytes are fundamental to maintain white adipose tissue (WAT) homeostasis, as illustrated by the activation of angiogenesis upon WAT expansion, a process that is impaired in obesity. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the crosstalk between ECs and adipocytes remain poorly understood. Here, we show that local production of polyamines in ECs stimulates adipocyte lipolysis and regulates WAT homeostasis in mice. We promote enhanced cell-autonomous angiogenesis by deleting Pten in the murine endothelium. Endothelial Pten loss leads to a WAT-selective phenotype, characterized by reduced body weight and adiposity in pathophysiological conditions. This phenotype stems from enhanced fatty acid β-oxidation in ECs concomitant with a paracrine lipolytic action on adipocytes, accounting for reduced adiposity. Combined analysis of murine models, isolated ECs and human specimens reveals that WAT lipolysis is mediated by mTORC1-dependent production of polyamines by ECs. Our results indicate that angiocrine metabolic signals are important for WAT homeostasis and organismal metabolism.We thank members of the Endothelial Pathobiology and Microenvironment Group for

Comparison of CMS measurements with predictions at NLO applying the Parton Branching Method and PYTHIA
In August 2023, more than 30 students joined the Special Remote DESY
summer-school to work on projects of importance for LHC experiments. In a
dedicated initiative, analyses that had not been incorporated into the RIVET
package were implemented and verified. Here, a brief description of the
accomplished work is given, and a comparison of the measurements with
predictions obtained from matched standard parton shower Monte Carlo event
generators as well as with those obtained from Parton-Branching TMDs with
corresponding parton showers are presented
The Fourteenth Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey: First Spectroscopic Data from the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey and from the second phase of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment
The fourth generation of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-IV) has been in
operation since July 2014. This paper describes the second data release from
this phase, and the fourteenth from SDSS overall (making this, Data Release
Fourteen or DR14). This release makes public data taken by SDSS-IV in its first
two years of operation (July 2014-2016). Like all previous SDSS releases, DR14
is cumulative, including the most recent reductions and calibrations of all
data taken by SDSS since the first phase began operations in 2000. New in DR14
is the first public release of data from the extended Baryon Oscillation
Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS); the first data from the second phase of the
Apache Point Observatory (APO) Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE-2),
including stellar parameter estimates from an innovative data driven machine
learning algorithm known as "The Cannon"; and almost twice as many data cubes
from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA) survey as were in the previous
release (N = 2812 in total). This paper describes the location and format of
the publicly available data from SDSS-IV surveys. We provide references to the
important technical papers describing how these data have been taken (both
targeting and observation details) and processed for scientific use. The SDSS
website (www.sdss.org) has been updated for this release, and provides links to
data downloads, as well as tutorials and examples of data use. SDSS-IV is
planning to continue to collect astronomical data until 2020, and will be
