Structure of isobaric analog states in 91Nb populated by the 90Zr(a,t) reaction

    Get PDF
Decay via proton emission of isobaric analog states (IAS's) in 91Nb^{91}{Nb} was studied using the 90Zr(α,t)^{90}{Zr}(\alpha,t) reaction at EαE_\alpha=180 MeV. This study provides information about the damping mechanism of these states. Decay to the ground state and low-lying phonon states in 90Zr^{90}{Zr} was observed. The experimental data are compared with theoretical predictions wherein the IAS `single-particle' proton escape widths are calculated in a continuum RPA approach. The branching ratios for decay to the phonon states are explained using a simple model.Comment: 3 figures. submitted to Phys. Lett.

Tests of isospin symmetry breaking at ϕ(1020)\phi (1020) meson factories

    In a model of isospin symmetry breaking we obtain the (ee+ππ+e^{-} e^{+} \rightarrow \pi^{-} \pi^{+}) amplitude QQ and the isospin I=0I=0 and I=1I=1 relative phase ψ\psi at the ϕ(1020)\phi (1020) resonance in aproximate agreement with experiment. The model predicts \Gamma(\phi \rightarrow \omega \pi^{0}) \approx 4 \cdot 10^{-4} \;\mbox{MeV}. We have also obtained \Gamma (\phi \rightarrow \eta' \gamma)=5.2 \cdot 10^{-4} \;\mbox{MeV}. Measuring this partial width would strongly constrain η\eta-η\eta' mixing. The branching ratios BRBR of the isospin violating decays ρ+π+η\rho^{+} \rightarrow \pi^{+} \eta and ηρ±π\eta' \rightarrow \rho^{\pm} \pi^{\mp} are predicted to be BR(ρ+π+η)=3105BR(\rho^{+} \rightarrow \pi^{+} \eta)=3 \cdot 10^{-5} and BR(ηρ±π)=4103BR(\eta' \rightarrow \rho^{\pm} \pi^{\mp})=4 \cdot 10^{-3}, respectively, leading to BR[ϕρ±π(π±η)π(π±γγ)π]=106BR[\phi \rightarrow \rho^{\pm} \pi^{\mp} \rightarrow (\pi^{\pm} \eta)\pi^{\mp} \rightarrow (\pi^{\pm} \gamma \gamma)\pi^{\mp}]=10^{-6} and BR[ϕηγ(ρ±π)γ]=2106BR[\phi \rightarrow \eta' \gamma \rightarrow (\rho^{\pm} \pi^{\mp})\gamma]=2\cdot 10^{-6}.Comment: 11 pages 2 Figures ( not included available on request ), Latex, Karlsruhe TTP42-9

Dysregulation of kynurenine metabolism is related to proinflammatory cytokines, attention, and prefrontal cortex volume in schizophrenia

The kynurenine pathway (KP) of tryptophan (TRP) catabolism links immune system activation with neurotransmitter signaling. The KP metabolite kynurenic acid (KYNA) is increased in the brains of people with schizophrenia. We tested the extent to which: (1) brain KP enzyme mRNAs, (2) brain KP metabolites, and (3) plasma KP metabolites differed on the basis of elevated cytokines in schizophrenia vs. control groups and the extent to which plasma KP metabolites were associated with cognition and brain volume in patients displaying elevated peripheral cytokines. KP enzyme mRNAs and metabolites were assayed in two independent postmortem brain samples from a total of 71 patients with schizophrenia and 72 controls. Plasma KP metabolites, cognition, and brain volumes were measured in an independent cohort of 96 patients with schizophrenia and 81 healthy controls. Groups were stratified based on elevated vs. normal proinflammatory cytokine mRNA levels. In the prefrontal cortex (PFC), kynurenine (KYN)/TRP ratio, KYNA levels, and mRNA for enzymes, tryptophan dioxygenase (TDO) and kynurenine aminotransferases (KATI/II), were significantly increased in the high cytokine schizophrenia subgroup. KAT mRNAs significantly correlated with mRNA for glial fibrillary acidic protein in patients. In plasma, the high cytokine schizophrenia subgroup displayed an elevated KYN/TRP ratio, which correlated inversely with attention and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) volume. This study provides further evidence for the role of inflammation in a subgroup of patients with schizophrenia and suggests a molecular mechanism through which inflammation could lead to schizophrenia. Proinflammatory cytokines may elicit conversion of TRP to KYN in the periphery and increase the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonist KYNA via increased KAT mRNA and possibly more enzyme synthesis activity in brain astrocytes,  leading to DLPFC volume loss, and attention impairment in schizophrenia.Jochen Kindler, Chai K. In this article we present a new experimental approach for production of heavy and superheavy elements (HE, SHE). Nuclear reactions at low incident energies induced by heavy ion (HI) projectiles on fissile target nuclei are investigated. Dedicated detection setup is presented and the preliminary results for the reaction 197Au(7.5 MeV /u) + 232Th, studied at the Cyclotron Institute of Texas A&M University, are given

Risk profiles and one-year outcomes of patients with newly diagnosed atrial fibrillation in India: Insights from the GARFIELD-AF Registry.

BACKGROUND: The Global Anticoagulant Registry in the FIELD-Atrial Fibrillation (GARFIELD-AF) is an ongoing prospective noninterventional registry, which is providing important information on the baseline characteristics, treatment patterns, and 1-year outcomes in patients with newly diagnosed non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). This report describes data from Indian patients recruited in this registry. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 52,014 patients with newly diagnosed AF were enrolled globally; of these, 1388 patients were recruited from 26 sites within India (2012-2016). In India, the mean age was 65.8 years at diagnosis of NVAF. Hypertension was the most prevalent risk factor for AF, present in 68.5% of patients from India and in 76.3% of patients globally (P < 0.001). Diabetes and coronary artery disease (CAD) were prevalent in 36.2% and 28.1% of patients as compared with global prevalence of 22.2% and 21.6%, respectively (P < 0.001 for both). Antiplatelet therapy was the most common antithrombotic treatment in India. With increasing stroke risk, however, patients were more likely to receive oral anticoagulant therapy [mainly vitamin K antagonist (VKA)], but average international normalized ratio (INR) was lower among Indian patients [median INR value 1.6 (interquartile range {IQR}: 1.3-2.3) versus 2.3 (IQR 1.8-2.8) (P < 0.001)]. Compared with other countries, patients from India had markedly higher rates of all-cause mortality [7.68 per 100 person-years (95% confidence interval 6.32-9.35) vs 4.34 (4.16-4.53), P < 0.0001], while rates of stroke/systemic embolism and major bleeding were lower after 1 year of follow-up. CONCLUSION: Compared to previously published registries from India, the GARFIELD-AF registry describes clinical profiles and outcomes in Indian patients with AF of a different etiology. The registry data show that compared to the rest of the world, Indian AF patients are younger in age and have more diabetes and CAD. Patients with a higher stroke risk are more likely to receive anticoagulation therapy with VKA but are underdosed compared with the global average in the GARFIELD-AF. Altered levels of immune cell adhesion molecules are associated with memory impairment in schizophrenia and healthy controls

    No full text
Increased cytokines and increased intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM1) found in the schizophrenia prefrontal cortex and in the blood may relate to cognitive deficits. Endothelial ICAM1 regulates immune cell trafficking into the brain by binding to integrins located on the surface of leukocytes. Whether the circulating levels of the main ICAM1 adhesion partners, lymphocyte-function associated antigen-1 (LFA1) and complement receptor 3 (CR3), both integrins, are altered in schizophrenia is unknown. Gene expressions of ICAM1, LFA1 and CR3 were measured in leukocytes from 86 schizophrenia patients and 77 controls. Participants were also administered cognitive testing to determine the extent to which cognitive ability was related to molecular measures of leukocyte adhesion. This cohort was previously stratified into inflammatory subgroups based on circulating cytokine mRNAs; thus, gene expressions were analysed by diagnosis and by inflammatory subgroups. Previously measured plasma ICAM1 protein was elevated in "high inflammation" schizophrenia compared to both "high" and "low inflammation" controls while ICAM1 mRNA was unchanged in leukocytes. LFA1 mRNA was decreased and CR3 mRNA was increased in leukocytes from people with schizophrenia compared to controls. LFA1 mRNA levels were positively correlated with working memory and elevated soluble ICAM1 was negatively correlated with verbal memory in schizophrenia. Altogether, some of the cognitive deficits in schizophrenia may be associated with altered expression of molecules that regulate immune cell trafficking.Helen Q.Cai, Thomas W.Weickert, Vibeke S.Catts, Ryan Balzan, Cherrie Galletly, Dennis Liu, Maryanne O'Donnel

209Bi(6He,α) reaction mechanisms studied near the Coulomb barrier using n–α coincidence measurements

    Get PDF
AbstractThe 6He+209Bi reaction displays a remarkably large cross section for α-particle emission at energies near the Coulomb barrier. The possible reactions that may produce the observed α particles include two-neutron transfer, one-neutron transfer, and direct projectile breakup. Each of these mechanisms results in a distinctive angular correlation between the α particle and outgoing neutron(s). A neutron-α-particle coincidence experiment was performed to separate these different modes. The neutron data show significant angular correlations. Monte Carlo simulations of one-neutron transfer are compared with the experimental data. It is shown that approximately 20% of the observed α-particle yield is due to this process
