    Contact entre particules déformables : de la limite de Hertz aux grandes déformations

    La plupart des études bidimensionnelles sur les matériaux granulaires considèrent l'assemblage de particules cylindriques dans le régime des petites déformations, en utilisant la description du contact de Hertz. Néanmoins, dans plusieurs cas, les déformations subies par les particules ne sont pas infinitésimales. L'étude de validité de l'hypothèse des petites déformations représente donc un enjeu important pour déterminer la pertinence des prévisions issues de ces études bidimensionnelles. Au moyen de nouvelles approches expérimentales, nous étudions la déformation d'un assemblage de particules soumis à grandes déformations. Nous avons mis en place un appareil expérimental capable de comprimer ou de cisailler un assemblage de particules, couplé à un dispositif d'imagerie à haute résolution (taille de pixel est 5.29 ?m) pour obtenir des images de chaque particule au cours d'un chargement. La mesure du champs de déformation et son évolution sont obtenues par la corrélation d'images numériques, et plusieurs paramètres ont été pris en compte tels que le frottement entre particules et la polydispersité de taille. Parallèlement à ces expériences, des simulations numériques sont réalisées dans les mêmes conditions à l'aide de la méthode des éléments finis et de la méthodes des points matériels [1]. Cette dernière méthode est basée sur la discrétisation de chaque particule par une collection de point matériels. L'information portée par les points matériels est projetée sur un maillage de fond, où les équations du mouvement sont résolues. Cette solution est alors utilisée pour mettre à jour les points matériels. Différents grandeurs macroscopiques (contrainte, compacité...) et microscopiques (connectivité, anisotropie...) sont obtenues numériquement et expérimentalement. Une comparaison entre ces paramètres numériques et expérimentaux permet de valider mutuellement ces approches et de déterminer le comportement de ces matériaux à particules déformables.     Exploiting symmetries for weight matrix design in CT imaging

    In this paper we propose several methods of constructing the system matrix (SM) of a Computed Tomography (CT) scanner with two objectives: (1) to construct SMs in the shortest possible time and store them in an ordinary PC without losing quality, (2) to analyze the possible applications of the proposed method to 3D, taking into account SMs' sizes, computing time and reconstructed image quality. In order to build the SM, we propose two new field of view (FOV) pixellation schemes, based on a polar coordinate system (polar grid) by taking advantage of the polar rotation symmetries of CT devices. Comparisons between the SMs proposed are performed using two phantom and a real CT-simulator images.     A Survey on Daylighting Education in Italian Universities : Knowledge of Standards, Metrics and Simulation Tools

    Daylighting is a strategic topic to achieve sustainable buildings, so it is more and more imperative that it is implemented in architecture curricula to prepare a new generation of daylighting-oriented practitioners. In this frame, the DAYKE project (Daylight Knowledge in Europe) was set up to explore the level of knowledge about daylighting among European professionals and students. DAYKE-Europe was replicated as DAYKE-Italy to study the knowledge of daylight standards, metrics and software among Italian architecture students, and to compare it to that observed within DAYKE-Europe. A sample of 542 questionnaires were collected in five universities. Primary outcomes were: (i) a general low level of knowledge on daylighting was observed; the most cited metrics were the average daylight factor and the geometrical window-to-floor ratio, while climate-based daylight metrics were rarely mentioned; (ii) master science M.Sc. students reported more knowledge on daylight metrics and regulations than bachelor B.Sc. students, while the implementation of daylight metrics and strategies in projects was mainly deficient among B.Sc. students; (iii) compared to European students (DAYKE-Europe), Italian students showed a higher knowledge of daylight metrics and software (especially as for M.Sc. students), while the opposite was observed for standards, regulations and protocols. Based on the results, a reconsideration of daylight education in architecture curricula is recommended

    In vivo characterization of the optical and hemodynamic properties of the human sternocleidomastoid muscle through ultrasound-guided hybrid near-infrared spectroscopies

    Objective. In this paper, we present a detailed in vivo characterization of the optical and hemodynamic properties of the human sternocleidomastoid muscle (SCM), obtained through ultrasound-guided near-infrared time-domain and diffuse correlation spectroscopies. Approach. A total of sixty-five subjects (forty-nine females, sixteen males) among healthy volunteers and thyroid nodule patients have been recruited for the study. Their SCM hemodynamic (oxy-, deoxy- and total hemoglobin concentrations, blood flow, blood oxygen saturation and metabolic rate of oxygen extraction) and optical properties (wavelength dependent absorption and reduced scattering coefficients) have been measured by the use of a novel hybrid device combining in a single unit time-domain near-infrared spectroscopy, diffuse correlation spectroscopy and simultaneous ultrasound imaging. Main results. We provide detailed tables of the results related to SCM baseline (i.e. muscle at rest) properties, and reveal significant differences on the measured parameters due to variables such as side of the neck, sex, age, body mass index, depth and thickness of the muscle, allowing future clinical studies to take into account such dependencies. Significance. The non-invasive monitoring of the hemodynamics and metabolism of the sternocleidomastoid muscle during respiration became a topic of increased interest partially due to the increased use of mechanical ventilation during the COVID-19 pandemic. Near-infrared diffuse optical spectroscopies were proposed as potential practical monitors of increased recruitment of SCM during respiratory distress. They can provide clinically relevant information on the degree of the patient's respiratory effort that is needed to maintain an optimal minute ventilation, with potential clinical application ranging from evaluating chronic pulmonary diseases to more acute settings, such as acute respiratory failure, or to determine the readiness to wean from invasive mechanical ventilation.</p

    Anesthesia of Epinephelus marginatus with essential oil of Aloysia polystachya: an approach on blood parameters

    This study investigated the anesthetic potential of the essential oil (EO) of Aloysia polystachya in juveniles of dusky grouper (Epinephelus marginatus). Fish were exposed to different concentrations of EO of A. polystachya to evaluate time of induction and recovery from anesthesia. In the second experiment, fish were divided into four groups: control, ethanol and 50 or 300 mu L L-1 EO of A. polystachya, and each group was submitted to induction for 3.5 min and recovery for 5 or 10 min. The blood gases and glucose levels showed alterations as a function of the recovery times, but Na+ and K+ levels did not show any alteration. In conclusion, the EO from leaves of A. polystachya is an effective anesthetic for dusky grouper, because anesthesia was reached within the recommended time at EO concentrations of 300 and 400 mu L L-1.     Towards an integrated computational method to determine internal spaces for optimum environmental conditions

    Computational Fluid Dynamics tools and Response Surface Methodology optimization techniques were coupled for the evaluation of an optimum window opening design that improves the ventilation efficiency in a naturally-ventilated building. The multi-variable optimization problem was based on Design of Experiments analysis and the Central Composite Design method for the sampling process and estimation of quadratic models for the response variables. The Screening optimization method was used for the generation of the optimal design solution. The generated results indicated a good performance of the estimated response surface revealing the strength correlations between the parameters. Window width was found to have greater impact on the flow rate values with correlation coefficient of 73.62%, in comparison to the standard deviation 55.68%, where the window height prevails with correlation coefficient of 96.94% and 12.35% for the flow rate. The CFD results were validated against wind tunnel experiments and the optimization solution was verified with simulation runs, proving the accuracy of the methodology followed, which is applicable to numerous environmental design problems

    Above- and below-ground net primary productivity across ten Amazonian forests on contrasting soils

This work is distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 License.The net primary productivity (NPP) of tropical forests is one of the most important and least quantified components of the global carbon cycle. Most relevant studies have focused particularly on the quantification of the above-ground coarse wood productivity, and little is known about the carbon fluxes involved in other elements of the NPP, the partitioning of total NPP between its above- and below-ground components and the main environmental drivers of these patterns. In this study we quantify the above- and below-ground NPP of ten Amazonian forests to address two questions: (1) How do Amazonian forests allocate productivity among its above- and below-ground components? (2) How do soil and leaf nutrient status and soil texture affect the productivity of Amazonian forests? Using a standardized methodology to measure the major elements of productivity, we show that NPP varies between 9.3±1.3MgC ha−1 yr−1 (mean±standard error), at a white sand plot, and 17.0±1.4MgC ha−1 yr−1 at a very fertile Terra Preta site, with an overall average of 12.8±0.9MgC ha−1 yr−1. The studied forests allocate on average 64±3% and 36±3% of the total NPP to the above and below-ground components, respectively. The ratio of above-ground and below-ground NPP is almost invariant with total NPP. Litterfall and fine root production both increase with total NPP, while stem production shows no overall trend. Total NPP tends to increase with soil phosphorus and leaf nitrogen status. However, allocation of NPP to below-ground shows no relationship to soil fertility, but appears to decrease with the increase of soil clay content

    Performance of the First ANTARES Detector Line

    In this paper we report on the data recorded with the first Antares detector line. The line was deployed on the 14th of February 2006 and was connected to the readout two weeks later. Environmental data for one and a half years of running are shown. Measurements of atmospheric muons from data taken from selected runs during the first six months of operation are presented. Performance figures in terms of time residuals and angular resolution are given. Finally the angular distribution of atmospheric muons is presented and from this the depth profile of the muon intensity is derived.Comment: 14 pages, 9 figure
