Exploring female dancer’s emotions and coping experiences following deselection:An interpretative phenomenological analysis
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to (a) explore female dancers’ experiences of emotions following deselection and (b) examine the coping mechanisms used by dancers to overcome these emotions.Methods: Two one-on-one semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten female dancers (aged 20–26, average career length M = 6 years) from dance forms including ballet, jazz, commercial, and contemporary. Data were collected and analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis by Smith (2009).Results: Dancers experienced a rollercoaster of emotions including disappointment, confidence impacts, and embarrassment, as well as changes in their feelings towards dance. To deal with these emotions the dancers often avoided their emotions, used dance as therapy, and sought social support as coping mechanisms.Conclusions: Dancers’ emotional experiences of deselection seem to negatively influence the social identities of the dancer and the levels of motivation they held towards dance. Findings highlighted the importance of coping with these emotions, and suggested future sport psychologists should apply interventions to assist with this and the regulation of emotions to prevent dancers from dropping out
Evidence for Supernova-Synthesised Dust from the Rising Afterglow of GRB 071025 at z~5
We present observations and analysis of the broadband afterglow of Swift GRB
071025. Using optical and infrared (RIYJHK) photometry, we derive a photometric
redshift of 4.4 < z < 5.2; at this redshift our simultaneous multicolour
observations begin at ~30 s after the GRB trigger in the host frame and during
the initial rising phase of the afterglow. We associate the light curve peak at
580 s in the observer frame with the formation of the forward shock, giving an
estimate of the initial Lorentz factor Gamma_0 ~ 200. The red spectral energy
distribution (even in regions not affected by the Lyman-alpha break) provides
secure evidence of a large dust column. However, the inferred extinction curve
shows a prominent flat component between 2000-3000 Angstroms in the rest-frame,
inconsistent with any locally observed template but well-fit by models of dust
formed by supernovae. Time-dependent fits to the extinction profile reveal no
evidence of dust destruction and limit the decrease in the extinction column to
Delta A_3000 < 0.54 mag after t = 50 s in the rest frame. Our observations
provide evidence of a transition in dust properties at z~5, in agreement with
studies of high-z quasars, and suggest that SN-formed dust continues to

Constraining GRB Emission Physics with Extensive Early-Time, Multiband Follow-up
Understanding the origin and diversity of emission processes responsible for
Gamma-ray Bursts (GRBs) remains a pressing challenge. While prompt and
contemporaneous panchromatic observations have the potential to test
predictions of the internal-external shock model, extensive multiband imaging
has been conducted for only a few GRBs. We present rich, early-time, multiband
datasets for two \swift\ events, GRB 110205A and GRB 110213A. The former shows
optical emission since the early stages of the prompt phase, followed by the
steep rising in flux up to ~1000s after the burst ( with
). We discuss this feature in the context of the
reverse-shock scenario and interpret the following single power-law decay as
being forward-shock dominated. Polarization measurements, obtained with the
RINGO2 instrument mounted on the Liverpool Telescope, also provide hints on the
nature of the emitting ejecta. The latter event, instead, displays a very
peculiar optical to near-infrared lightcurve, with two achromatic peaks. In
this case, while the first peak is probably due to the onset of the afterglow,
we interpret the second peak to be produced by newly injected material,

Interplay Between Childhood Physical Abuse and Familial Risk in the Onset of Psychotic Disorders
Background: Childhood abuse is considered one of the main environmental risk factors for the development of psychotic symptoms and disorders. However, this association could be due to genetic factors influencing exposure to such risky environments or increasing sensitivity to the detrimental impact of abuse. Therefore, using a large epidemiological case-control sample, we explored the interplay between a specific form of childhood abuse and family psychiatric history (a proxy for genetic risk) in the onset of psychosis. Methods: Data were available on 172 first presentation psychosis cases and 246 geographically matched controls from the Aetiology and Ethnicity of Schizophrenia and Other Psychoses study. Information on childhood abuse was obtained retrospectively using the Childhood Experience of Care and Abuse Questionnaire and occurrence of psychotic and affective disorders in first degree relatives with the Family Interview for Genetic Studies. Results: Parental psychosis was more common among psychosis cases than unaffected controls (adjusted OR = 5.96, 95% CI: 2.09–17.01, P = .001). Parental psychosis was also associated with physical abuse from mothers in both cases (OR = 3.64, 95% CI: 1.06–12.51, P = .040) and controls (OR = 10.93, 95% CI: 1.03–115.90, P = .047), indicative of a gene-environment correlation. Nevertheless, adjusting for parental psychosis did not measurably impact on the abuse-psychosis association (adjusted OR = 3.31, 95% CI: 1.22–8.95, P= .018). No interactions were found between familial liability and maternal physical abuse in determining psychosis caseness. Conclusions: This study found no evidence that familial risk accounts for associations between childhood physical abuse and psychotic disorder nor that it substantially increases the odds of psychosis among individuals reporting abuse
Ultraviolet, Optical, and X-Ray Observations of the Type Ia Supernova 2005am with Swift
We present ultraviolet and optical light curves in six broadband filters and
grism spectra obtained by Swift's Ultraviolet/Optical Telescope for the Type Ia
supernova SN2005am. The data were collected beginning about four days before
the B-band maximum, with excellent coverage of the rapid decline phase and
later observations extending out to 69 days after the peak. The optical and
near UV light curve match well those of SN1992A. The other UV observations
constitute the first set of light curves shorter than 2500 Angstroms and allow
us to compare the light curve evolution in three UV bands. The UV behavior of
this and other low redshift supernovae can be used to constrain theories of
progenitor evolution or to interpret optical light curves of high redshift
supernovae. Using Swift's X-Ray Telescope, we also report the upper limit to
SN2005am's X-ray luminosity to be 1.77 x 10^40 erg s^-1 in the 0.3--10 keV

Grazing livestock move by Levy walks - Implications for soil health and environment
Grazing livestock plays an important role in the context of food security, agricultural sustainability and climate change. Understanding how livestock move and interact with their environment may offer new insights on how grazing practices impact soil and ecosystem functions at spatial and temporal scales where knowledge is currently limited. We characterized daily and seasonal grazing patterns using Global Positioning System (GPS) data from two grazing strategies: conventionally- and rotationally-grazed pastures. Livestock movement was consistent with the so-called Lévy walks, and could thus be simulated with Lévy-walk based probability density functions. Our newly introduced "Moovement model” links grazing patterns with soil structure and related functions by coupling animal movement and soil structure dynamics models, allowing to predict spatially-explicit changes in key soil properties. Predicted post-grazing management-specific bulk densities were consistent with field measurements and confirmed that rotational grazing produced similar disturbance as conventional grazing despite hosting higher stock densities. Harnessing information on livestock movement and its impacts in soil structure within a modelling framework can help testing and optimizing grazing strategies for ameliorating their impact on soil health and environment
Phenotypic screening identifies a trisubstituted imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine series that induces differentiation in multiple AML cell lines
Acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) is an aggressive type of leukaemia with low rates of long-term survival. While the current standard of care is based on cytotoxic chemotherapy, a promising emerging approach is differentiation therapy. However, most current differentiating agents target specific mutations and are effective only in certain patient subtypes. To identify agents which may be effective in wider population cohorts, we performed a phenotypic screen with the myeloid marker CD11b and identified a compound series that was able to differentiate AML cell lines in vitro regardless of their mutation status. Structure-activity relationship studies revealed that replacing the formamide and catechol methyl ether groups with sulfonamide and indazole respectively improved the in vitro metabolic profile of the series while maintaining the differentiation profile in multiple cell lines. This optimisation exercise enabled progression of a lead compound to in vivo efficacy testing. Our work supports the promise of phenotypic screening to identify novel small molecules that induce differentiation in a wide range of AML subtypes
Digital Interventions Supporting Self-care in People With Type 2 Diabetes Across Greater Manchester (Greater Manchester Diabetes My Way):Protocol for a Mixed Methods Evaluation
BACKGROUND: Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) is common, with a prevalence of approximately 7% of the population in the United Kingdom. The quality of T2D care is inconsistent across the United Kingdom, and Greater Manchester (GM) does not currently achieve the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence treatment targets. Barriers to delivery of care include low attendance and poor engagement with local T2D interventions, which tend to consist of programs of education delivered in traditional, face-to-face clinical settings. Thus, a flexible approach to T2D management that is accessible to people from different backgrounds and communities is needed. Diabetes My Way (DMW) is a digital platform that offers a comprehensive self-management and educational program that should be accessible to a wide range of people through mobile apps and websites. Building on evidence generated by a Scotland-wide pilot study, DMW is being rolled out and tested across GM. OBJECTIVE: The overarching objectives are to assess whether DMW improves outcomes for patients with T2D in the GM area, to explore the acceptability of the DMW intervention to stakeholders, and to assess the cost-effectiveness of the intervention. METHODS: A mixed methods approach will be used. We will take a census approach to recruitment in that all eligible participants in GM will be invited to participate. The primary outcomes will be intervention-related changes compared with changes observed in a matched group of controls, and the secondary outcomes will be within-person intervention-related changes. The cost-effectiveness analysis will focus on obtaining reliable estimates of how each intervention affects risk factors such as HbA1c and costs across population groups. Qualitative data will be collected via semistructured interviews and focus groups and organized using template analysis. RESULTS: As of May 10, 2021, a total of 316 participants have been recruited for the quantitative study and have successfully enrolled. A total of 278 participants attempted to register but did not have appropriate permissions set by the general practitioners to gain access to their data. In total, 10 participants have been recruited for the qualitative study (7 practitioners and 3 patients). An extension to recruitment has been granted for the quantitative element of the research, and analysis should be complete by December 2022. Recruitment and analysis for the qualitative study should be complete by December 2021. CONCLUSIONS: The findings from this study can be used both to develop the DMW system and improve accessibility and usability in more deprived populations generally, thus improving equity in access to support for T2D self-management. Dust and Metal Column Densities in Gamma-Ray Burst Host Galaxies
In this paper we present the results from the analysis of a sample of 28
gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglow spectral energy distributions, spanning the
X-ray through to near-infrared wavelengths. This is the largest sample of GRB
afterglow spectral energy distributions thus far studied, providing a strong
handle on the optical depth distribution of soft X-ray absorption and
dust-extinction systems in GRB host galaxies. We detect an absorption system
within the GRB host galaxy in 79% of the sample, and an extinction system in
71% of the sample, and find the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) extinction law to
provide an acceptable fit to the host galaxy extinction profile for the
majority of cases, consistent with previous findings. The range in the soft
X-ray absorption to dust-extinction ratio, N_{H,X}/Av, in GRB host galaxies
spans almost two orders of magnitude, and the typical ratios are significantly
larger than those of the Magellanic Clouds or Milky Way. Although dust
destruction could be a cause, at least in part, for the large N_{H,X}/Av
ratios, the good fit provided by the SMC extinction law for the majority of our
sample suggests that there is an abundance of small dust grains in the GRB
environment, which we would expect to have been destroyed if dust destruction
were responsible for the large N_{H,X}/Av ratios. Instead, our analysis
suggests that the distribution of N_{H,X}/Av in GRB host galaxies may be mostly
intrinsic to these galaxies, and this is further substantiated by evidence for
a strong negative correlation between N_{H,X}/Av and metallicity for a
subsample of GRB hosts with known metallicity. Furthermore, we find the
N_{H,X}/Av ratio and metallicity for this subsample of GRBs to be comparable to

Susceptibility to Ebbinghaus and Muller-Lyer illusions in autistic children: a comparison of three different methods
Background
Studies reporting altered susceptibility to visual illusions in autistic individuals compared to that typically developing individuals have been taken to reflect differences in perception (e.g. reduced global processing), but could instead reflect differences in higher-level decision-making strategies.
Methods
We measured susceptibility to two contextual illusions (Ebbinghaus, Müller-Lyer) in autistic children aged 6–14 years and typically developing children matched in age and non-verbal ability using three methods. In experiment 1, we used a new two-alternative-forced-choice method with a roving pedestal designed to minimise cognitive biases. Here, children judged which of two comparison stimuli was most similar in size to a reference stimulus. In experiments 2 and 3, we used methods previously used with autistic populations. In experiment 2, children judged whether stimuli were the ‘same’ or ‘different’, and in experiment 3, we used a method-of-adjustment task.
Results
Across all tasks, autistic children were equally susceptible to the Ebbinghaus illusion as typically developing children. Autistic children showed a heightened susceptibility to the Müller-Lyer illusion, but only in the method-of-adjustment task. This result may reflect differences in decisional criteria.
Conclusions
Our results are inconsistent with theories proposing reduced contextual integration in autism and suggest that previous reports of altered susceptibility to illusions may arise from differences in decision-making, rather than differences in perception per se. Our findings help to elucidate the underlying reasons for atypical responses to perceptual illusions in autism and call for the use of methods that reduce cognitive bias when measuring illusion susceptibility
