    Physical, chemical and biological variability in the Dr. C. Gelsi reservoir(NW Argentine) : a temporal and spatial approach

    With the purpose of understanding the phytoplankton dynamics in two vertical profiles of the Dr. C. Gelsi reservoir (Tucumán, Argentina, monthly samplings were conducted from October 1997 to March 1999 in the limnetic zone and at the intersection of the Salí and Tapia tributary. The reservoir was characterized as warm monomictic, with bicarbonate, chloride, sodium, calcium and/or magnesium waters. In both sites total nitrogen concentration was higher than 1 mg/l, whereas that of orthophosphate reached 0.2 mg/l. Out of the eleven organochlorine pesticides analyzed, the presence mainly of lindane and methoxychlor, with higher concentrations in the warm months was confirmed. Bacterial load values were compatible with water quality standards, and variations in the number of actinomycetes colonies in the sediments were correlated, among other parameters, with dissolved oxygen. In the two zones studied a total of 57 phytoplankton taxa, 49 % green algae, 37 % diatoms, 9 % Cyanobacteria and 5 % dinoflagelates, were identified. Central diatoms (Aulacoseira granulata and Cyclotella meneghiniana) prevailed in the phytoplankton and, in a lesser degree, the other groups, low values of specific diversity being obtained. A principal components analysis based on the absolute abundance of species and on some physico-chemical parameters ordinated the samples of the various levels, this abundance being more evident in the limnetic zone. There was also a tendency to the separation of stratifications from the two consecutive years and homogeneity in the samples from the mixing period was noticed. On the basis of the saprobic index, water quality was from β − α-mesosaprobic to α-mesosaprobic.Con el objeto de interpretar la dinámica del fitoplancton en dos perfiles verticales del embalse Dr. C. Gelsi (Tucumán, Argentina), se realizaron muestreos mensuales desde octubre de 1997 a marzo de 1999, en la zona limnética y en la intersección de los tributarios, ríos Salí y Tapia. El embalse fue caracterizado como monomíctico cálido, con aguas bicarbonatadas, cloruradas, sódicas, cálcicas y/o magnésicas. En ambos sitios, la concentración media de nitrógeno total fue superior a 1 mg/l, mientras que la de ortofosfato llegó a 0.2 mg/l. De los once plaguicidas organoclorados analizados se comprobó, principalmente, la presencia de lindano y metoxicloro, con concentraciones más elevadas en los meses cálidos. Los valores de carga bacteriana fueron compatibles con las normas de calidad de agua y las variaciones del número de colonias de actinomycetes en los sedimentos estuvieron correlacionadas entre otros parámetros con el oxígeno disuelto. En las dos zonas estudiadas se identificaron un total de 57 taxones: 49 % algas verdes, 37 % diatomeas, 9 % Cyanobacteria y 5 % dinoflagelados. Las diatomeas centrales (Aulacoseira granulata y Cyclotella meneghiniana) predominaron en el fitoplancton y en menor orden, los otros grupos, obteniéndose bajos valores de diversidad específica. Los análisis de componentes principales basados en la abundancia absoluta de las especies y en algunos parámetros fisicoquímicos, ordenaron las muestras de los distintos niveles, siendo ésta más evidente en la zona limnética. Asimismo, hubo una tendencia a la separación de las estratificaciones de los dos años consecutivos y se observó homogeneidad en las muestras provenientes del período de mezcla.     Cianobacterias de Humedales de Altura del Noroeste Argentino

    La variabilidad latitudinal y altitudinal de nuestro país posibilita la existencia de una diversidad de humedales que, en sentido amplio, incluyen marismas, pantanos y turberas o superficies cubiertas de aguas estancadas o fluyentes, permanentes o temporales, naturales o artificiales, dulces, salobres o saladas, e inclusive extensiones de agua marina cuya profundidad no exceda los seis metros en bajamar. El objetivo de este trabajo fue aportar al conocimiento de las cianobacterias en humedales de altura del Noroeste Argentino. Se realizó un muestreo estival interdisciplinario del 21 de enero al 01 de febrero de 2005 que abarcó el censo de veintiséis lagunas correspondientes a las provincias de Jujuy, Salta y Catamarca. Las muestras cualitativas se obtuvieron mediante el filtrado de 25 litros de agua a través de una red de plancton de 20 µm de poro. Las mismas fueron fijadas in situ con formaldehído al 4% y observadas bajo microscopio binocular con dispositivo para dibujo. De acuerdo a los resultados obtenidos la taxocenosis estuvo integrada por 23 taxones, en su mayoría cosmopolitas y de medios salobres, pertenecientes a Chroococcales (5), Nostocales (3) y Oscillatoriales (15). Phormidium inundatum es señalado por primera vez para el Noroeste Argentino y además de dicha especie son nuevas citas Merismopedia glauca, M. punctata, Synechococcus elongatus, Anabaena variabilis, Nodularia spumigena, Nostoc linckia, Leptolyngbya fragilis, Spirulina major, Phormidium autumnale, P. breve y P. molle para Catamarca.Fil: Mirande, Virginia.     Second Catalogue of the Phycological Collection, Cryptogamic Herbarium of the Miguel Lillo Foundation (Tucumán, Argentina)

    En esta oportunidad se da a conocer a la comunidad científica el segundo catálogo del material histórico depositado en la Colección Ficológica del Herbario Criptogámico de la Fundación Miguel Lillo. El listado comprende los ejemplares provenientes de la Kryptogamae exsiccatae editada por el Museo de Historia Natural de Viena. Para esta contribución el material algal se revisó metódicamente, los ejemplares y sus etiquetas fueron fotografiados y los datos originales se ingresaron en la base DATA LIL. Además se recopiló información sobre la Kryptogamae exsiccatae, sus colectores y los herbarios que preservan ejemplares similares. El catálogo incluye 489 especies pertenecientes a 198 géneros, correspondientes a: Cyanophyta (131), Chlorophyta (111), Charophyta (87), Rhodophyta (82), Ochrophyta (77) y Dinophyta (1). Los colectores más importantes por sus contribuciones son: S. Stockmayer (58), F. Filárszky (39), E. C. Teodorescu (36) y K. Rechinger (36). Con menos de 30 ejemplares podemos citar a K. von Keissler, A. Hansgirg, F. Krasser y D. Hylmö, entre otros. Las especies catalogadas pertenecen principalmente a la flora algal europea relevada a fines del siglo XIX y principios del XX y representan una colección de referencia mundial resultado del esfuerzo conjunto de notables coleccionistas europeos.Fil: Bustos, María Soledad.     Dating of the hominid (Homo neanderthalensis) remains accumulation from El Sidrón Cave (Piloña, Asturias, North Spain): an example of a multi-methodological approach to the dating of Upper Pleistocene sites.

    The age of Neanderthal remains and associated sediments from El Sidrón cave has been obtained through different dating methods (14CAMS, U/TH, OSL, ESR and AAR) and samples (charcoal debris, bone, tooth dentine, stalagmitic flowstone, carbonate-rich sediments, sedi- mentary quartz grains, tooth enamel and land snail shells). Detrital Th contamination ren- dered Th/U dating analyses of flowstone unreliable. Recent 14C contamination produced spurious age-values from charcoal samples as well as from inadequately pretreated tooth samples. Most consistent 14C dates are grouped into two series: one between 35 and 40 ka and the other between 48 and 49 ka. Most ESR and AAR samples yielded concordant ages, ranging between 39 and 45 ka; OSL dating results permitted adequate bracketing of the sedimentary layer that contained the human remains. Our results emphasize the value of multi-dating approaches for the establishment of reliable chronologies of human remains

    Recovery Signals of Rhodoliths Beds since Bottom Trawling Ban in the SCI Menorca Channel (Western Mediterranean)

    One of the objectives of the LIFE IP INTEMARES project is to assess the impact of bottom trawling on the vulnerable benthic habitats of the circalittoral bottoms of the Menorca Channel (western Mediterranean), designated a Site of Community Importance (SCI) within the Natura 2000 network. The present study compares the epibenthic communities of four areas, subjected to different bottom trawl fishing intensity levels. The assignment of fishing effort levels was based on the fishing effort distribution in the area calculated from Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) data and the existence of two Fishing Protected Zones in the Menorca Channel. Biological samples were collected from 39 beam trawl stations, sampled during a scientific survey on April 2019. We compare the diversity, composition, and density of the epibenthic flora and fauna, together with the rhodoliths coverage and the morphology of the main species of rhodoliths of four areas subjected to different levels of bottom trawl fishing effort, including one that has never been impacted by trawling. Our results have shown negative impacts of bottom trawling on rhodoliths beds and the first signals of their recovery in areas recently closed to this fishery, which indicate that this is an effective measure for the conservation of this habitat of special interest and must be included in the management plan required to declare the Menorca Channel as a Special Area of Conservation.En prens

    Six-year follow-up of slaughterhouse surveillance (2008-2013): the Catalan Slaughterhouse Support Network (SESC)

    Meat inspection has the ultimate objective of declaring the meat and offal obtained from carcasses of slaughtered animals fit or unfit for human consumption. This safeguards the health of consumers by ensuring that the food coming from these establishments poses no risk to public health. Concomitantly, it contributes to animal disease surveillance. The Catalan Public Health Protection Agency (Generalitat de Catalunya) identified the need to provide its meat inspectors with a support structure to improve diagnostic capacity: the Slaughterhouse Support Network (SESC). The main goal of the SESC was to offer continuing education to meat inspectors to improve the diagnostic capacity for lesions observed in slaughterhouses. With this aim, a web-based application was designed that allowed meat inspectors to submit their inquiries, images of the lesions, and samples for laboratory analysis. This commentary reviews the cases from the first 6 years of SESC operation (2008–2013). The program not only provides continuing education to inspectors but also contributes to the collection of useful information on animal health and welfare. Therefore, SESC complements animal disease surveillance programs, such as those for tuberculosis, bovine cysticercosis, and porcine trichinellosis, and is a powerful tool for early detection of emerging animal diseases and zoonoses

    Search for the standard model Higgs boson in the H to ZZ to 2l 2nu channel in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV

    A search for the standard model Higgs boson in the H to ZZ to 2l 2nu decay channel, where l = e or mu, in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV is presented. The data were collected at the LHC, with the CMS detector, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 inverse femtobarns. No significant excess is observed above the background expectation, and upper limits are set on the Higgs boson production cross section. The presence of the standard model Higgs boson with a mass in the 270-440 GeV range is excluded at 95% confidence level.Comment: Submitted to JHE

    Search for anomalous t t-bar production in the highly-boosted all-hadronic final state

    A search is presented for a massive particle, generically referred to as a Z', decaying into a t t-bar pair. The search focuses on Z' resonances that are sufficiently massive to produce highly Lorentz-boosted top quarks, which yield collimated decay products that are partially or fully merged into single jets. The analysis uses new methods to analyze jet substructure, providing suppression of the non-top multijet backgrounds. The analysis is based on a data sample of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5 inverse femtobarns. Upper limits in the range of 1 pb are set on the product of the production cross section and branching fraction for a topcolor Z' modeled for several widths, as well as for a Randall--Sundrum Kaluza--Klein gluon. In addition, the results constrain any enhancement in t t-bar production beyond expectations of the standard model for t t-bar invariant masses larger than 1 TeV.Comment: Submitted to the Journal of High Energy Physics; this version includes a minor typo correction that will be submitted as an erratu

    Measurement of the t t-bar production cross section in the dilepton channel in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV

    The t t-bar production cross section (sigma[t t-bar]) is measured in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV in data collected by the CMS experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.3 inverse femtobarns. The measurement is performed in events with two leptons (electrons or muons) in the final state, at least two jets identified as jets originating from b quarks, and the presence of an imbalance in transverse momentum. The measured value of sigma[t t-bar] for a top-quark mass of 172.5 GeV is 161.9 +/- 2.5 (stat.) +5.1/-5.0 (syst.) +/- 3.6(lumi.) pb, consistent with the prediction of the standard model.Comment: Replaced with published version.
