The Transient Supercooling Enhancement For A Pulsed Thermoelectric Cooler (TEC)

    Get PDF
Once TEC excitated by a high-voltage pulse, there exists a transient thermoelectric supercooling effect, which can be enhanced by keeping on increasing the Peltier cooling effect to compensate for the negative self-heating from the Joule heating effect and Fourier heat conduction effect. After superimposing an additional voltage pulse over a steady-state reference value in a short time scale, abrupt temperature drop will be produced by several more degrees below the steady-state cold junction temperature, and even against the earlier arrival of excessively Joule heating-dominated heat accumulation at cold junctions. Most previous work mainly focused on the minimum supercooling temperature or the maximum supercooling capacity achievable for a conventional thermoelectric module based on bismuth-telluride alloys. Nevertheless, three key process control parameters, with respect to the system response time for the supercooling temperature, the holding time of the supercooling state and the recovery time back to the reference steady state, were almost overlooked. In this work, analytical solutions on the optimization of pulse shapes upon the thermal-electrical conversion mechanism were investigated, for exploring the dynamic behaviours of the main thermoelectric effects respectively on the transient response for the cold junction temperature drop and the supercooling enhancement degree during pulsed operation. Furthermore, by the combinatorial optimization of the above process control parameters and pulse shapes, the optimal characteristic parameters for TE devices pulsed with supercooling are derived. The results indicate that, the monotonically increasing quarter-wave pulse shapes (especially the quarter-sine voltage excitation), combined with the optimized pulse amplitude of 2.5 times and pulse duration of 10s, show a greater advantage to achieve high sensitivity and stability, and require less energy to reach the minimum temperature. Also, it has contributed to an increase on the effective FIGure-of-merit ratio offrom the previous value of 1.76 to a maximum of 2.06 (namely improved by 17% ), as well as smaller temperature differences between hot and cold junctions. The discussions can be served as a theoretical basis for a pulsed TEC to improve the additional supercooling effect, and also prevent extensive heating of the material after the minimum temperature is reached, which may be attractive for compact thermal system to come up to the localized cooling level of high power packaging

We present new quasars discovered in the vicinity of the Andromeda and Triangulum galaxies with the LAMOST during the 2010 and 2011 observational seasons. Quasar candidates are selected based on the available SDSS, KPNO 4 m telescope, XSTPS optical, and WISE near infrared photometric data. We present 509 new quasars discovered in a stripe of ~135 sq. deg from M31 to M33 along the Giant Stellar Stream in the 2011 pilot survey datasets, and also 17 new quasars discovered in an area of ~100 sq. deg that covers the central region and the southeastern halo of M31 in the 2010 commissioning datasets. These 526 new quasars have i magnitudes ranging from 15.5 to 20.0, redshifts from 0.1 to 3.2. They represent a significant increase of the number of identified quasars in the vicinity of M31 and M33. There are now 26, 62 and 139 known quasars in this region of the sky with i magnitudes brighter than 17.0, 17.5 and 18.0 respectively, of which 5, 20 and 75 are newly-discovered. These bright quasars provide an invaluable collection with which to probe the kinematics and chemistry of the ISM/IGM in the Local Group of galaxies. A total of 93 quasars are now known with locations within 2.5 deg of M31, of which 73 are newly discovered. Tens of quasars are now known to be located behind the Giant Stellar Stream, and hundreds behind the extended halo and its associated substructures of M31. The much enlarged sample of known quasars in the vicinity of M31 and M33 can potentially be utilized to construct a perfect astrometric reference frame to measure the minute PMs of M31 and M33, along with the PMs of substructures associated with the Local Group of galaxies. Those PMs are some of the most fundamental properties of the Local Group.Comment: 26 pages, 6 figures, AJ accepte

Consumption of sugar sweetened beverages, artificially sweetened beverages and fruit juices and risk of type 2 diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and mortality: A meta-analysis

Introduction: Sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) intake is associated with an increased risk of cardiometabolic diseases. However, evidence regarding associations of artificially sweetened beverages (ASBs) and fruit juices with cardiometabolic diseases is mixed. In this study, we aimed to investigate the association between the SSB, ASB and fruit juice consumption with the incidence of cardiometabolic conditions and mortality. Methods: Relevant prospective studies were identified by searching PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane Library until December 2022 without language restrictions. The pooled relative risk (RR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated for the association of SSBs, ASBs, and fruit juices with the risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D), cardiovascular disease (CVD), and mortality by using random-effect models. Results: A total of 72 articles were included in this meta-analysis study. Significantly positive associations were observed between the consumption of individual beverages and T2D risk (RR: 1.27; 95% CI: 1.17, 1.38 for SSBs; RR: 1.32; 95% CI: 1.11, 1.56 for ASBs; and RR:0.98; 95% CI: 0.93, 1.03 for fruit juices). Moreover, our findings showed that intakes of SSBs and ASBs were significantly associated with risk of hypertension, stroke, and all-cause mortality (RR ranging from 1.08 to 1.54; all p < 0.05). A dose-response meta-analysis showed monotonic associations between SSB intake and hypertension, T2D, coronary heart disease (CHD), stroke and mortality, and the linear association was only significant between ASB consumption and hypertension risk. Higher SSB and ASB consumptions were associated with a greater risk of developing cardiometabolic diseases and mortality. Fruit juice intake was associated with a higher risk of T2D. Conclusion: Therefore, our findings suggest that neither ASBs nor fruit juices could be considered as healthier beverages alternative to SSBs for achieving improved health. Estimation and uncertainty analyses of grassland biomass in Northern China: Comparison of multiple remote sensing data sources and modeling approaches

Accurate estimation of grassland biomass and its dynamics are crucial not only for the biogeochemical dynamics of terrestrial ecosystems, but also for the sustainable use of grassland resources. However, estimations of grassland biomass on large spatial scale usually suffer from large variability and mostly lack quantitative uncertainty analyses. In this study, the spatial grassland biomass estimation and its uncertainty were assessed based on 265 field measurements and remote sensing data across Northern China during 2001-2005. Potential sources of uncertainty, including remote sensing data sources (DATsrc), model forms (MODfrm) and model parameters (biomass allocation, BMallo, e.g. root:shoot ratio), were determined and their relative contribution was quantified. The results showed that the annual grassland biomass in Northern China was 1268.37 +/- 180.84Tg (i.e., 532.02 +/- 99.71 g/m(2)) during 2001-2005, increasing from western to eastern area, with a mean relative uncertainty of 19.8%. There were distinguishable differences among the uncertainty contributions of three sources (BMallo >DATsrc>MODfrm), which contributed 52%, 27% and 13%, respectively. This study highlighted the need to concern the uncertainty in grassland biomass estimation, especially for the uncertainty related to BMallo. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved
