Fibre types in skeletal muscles of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients related to respiratory function and exercise tolerance.
Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the relationship between skeletal muscle, fibre type composition, functional respiratory impairment and exercise tolerance in patients with moderate to severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). A group of 22 COPD patients and 10 healthy control subjects were studied. In COPD patients, vital capacity (VC) and forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) were reduced to 79% and 51%, respectively. Diffusion indices (transfer factor of the lung for carbon monoxide (TL,CO) and carbon monoxide transfer coefficient (KCO)) were also reduced. Arterial oxygen tension (Pa,O2) was normal or slightly altered. A maximal exercise test was performed and anaerobic threshold was calculated. Muscle samples from vastus lateralis were obtained by needle biopsy. Myosin heavy chain (MHC) and light chain (MLC) isoforms were separated by gel electrophoresis and quantified by densitometry. MHC isoforms were considered as molecular markers of fibre types. The proportion of the fast MHC-2B isoform was increased in COPD patients. TL,CO, KCO, VC and FEV1 were positively correlated with slow MHC isoform content. TL,CO and KCO were also negatively correlated with the content of the fast MHC-2B isoform. No correlation was found between exercise parameters and MHC isoform composition. The co-ordinated expression between MHC and MLC isoforms was altered in COPD patients. We conclude that reduced oxygen availability, probably in combination with muscle disuse, may determine muscle alterations in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients. The altered correlations between myosin heavy chain and light chain isoforms suggest that co-ordinated protein expression is lost in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease muscles

Selective high frequency mechanical actuation driven by the VO2 electronic instability
Micro- and nano-electromechanical resonators are a fundamental building block
of modern technology, used in environmental monitoring, robotics, medical tools
as well as fundamental science. These devices rely on dedicated electronics to
generate their driving signal, resulting in an increased complexity and size.
Here, we present a new paradigm to achieve high-frequency mechanical actuation
based on the metal-insulator transition of VO, where the steep
variation of its electronic properties enables to realize high-frequency
electrical oscillations. The dual nature of this phase change, which is both
electronic and structural, turns the electrical oscillations into an intrinsic
actuation mechanism, powered by a small DC voltage and capable to selectively
excite the different mechanical modes of a microstructure. Our results pave the
way towards the realization of micro- and nano-electro-mechanical systems with
autonomous actuation from integrated DC power sources such as solar cells or
micro-batteries.Comment: Main text: 6 pages, 4 figures Supplemental Material: 16 pages, 7

Fluorescent nanoparticles for sensing
Nanoparticle-based fluorescent sensors have emerged as a competitive
alternative to small molecule sensors, due to their excellent
fluorescence-based sensing capabilities. The tailorability of design,
architecture, and photophysical properties has attracted the attention of many
research groups, resulting in numerous reports related to novel nanosensors
applied in sensing a vast variety of biological analytes. Although
semiconducting quantum dots have been the best-known representative of
fluorescent nanoparticles for a long time, the increasing popularity of new
classes of organic nanoparticle-based sensors, such as carbon dots and
polymeric nanoparticles, is due to their biocompatibility, ease of synthesis,
and biofunctionalization capabilities. For instance, fluorescent gold and
silver nanoclusters have emerged as a less cytotoxic replacement for
semiconducting quantum dot sensors. This chapter provides an overview of recent
developments in nanoparticle-based sensors for chemical and biological sensing
and includes a discussion on unique properties of nanoparticles of different
composition, along with their basic mechanism of fluorescence, route of
synthesis, and their advantages and limitations
2019 international consensus on cardiopulmonary resuscitation and emergency cardiovascular care science with treatment recommendations : summary from the basic life support; advanced life support; pediatric life support; neonatal life support; education, implementation, and teams; and first aid task forces
The International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation has initiated a continuous review of new, peer-reviewed, published cardiopulmonary resuscitation science. This is the third annual summary of the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation International Consensus on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care Science With Treatment Recommendations. It addresses the most recent published resuscitation evidence reviewed by International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation Task Force science experts. This summary addresses the role of cardiac arrest centers and dispatcher-assisted cardiopulmonary resuscitation, the role of extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation in adults and children, vasopressors in adults, advanced airway interventions in adults and children, targeted temperature management in children after cardiac arrest, initial oxygen concentration during resuscitation of newborns, and interventions for presyncope by first aid providers. Members from 6 International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation task forces have assessed, discussed, and debated the certainty of the evidence on the basis of the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation criteria, and their statements include consensus treatment recommendations. Insights into the deliberations of the task forces are provided in the Justification and Evidence to Decision Framework Highlights sections. The task forces also listed priority knowledge gaps for further research
Electrical behavior of MIS devices based on Si nanoclusters embedded in SiOxNy and SiO2 films
We examined and compared the electrical properties of silica (SiO2) and silicon oxynitride (SiOxNy) layers embedding silicon nanoclusters (Sinc) integrated in metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) devices. The technique used for the deposition of such layers is the reactive magnetron sputtering of a pure SiO2 target under a mixture of hydrogen/argon plasma in which nitrogen is incorporated in the case of SiOxNy layer. Al/SiOxNy-Sinc/p-Si and Al/SiO2-Sinc/p-Si devices were fabricated and electrically characterized. Results showed a high rectification ratio (>104) for the SiOxNy-based device and a resistive behavior when nitrogen was not incorporating (SiO2-based device). For rectifier devices, the ideality factor depends on the SiOxNy layer thickness. The conduction mechanisms of both MIS diode structures were studied by analyzing thermal and bias dependences of the carriers transport in relation with the nitrogen content
Observation and study of the decay

possible intermediate states, is measured to be

measurements the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures and 4 table
Evidence of a resonant structure in the cross section between 4.05 and 4.60 GeV
The cross section of the process for
center-of-mass energies from 4.05 to 4.60~GeV is measured precisely using data
samples collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage
ring.
Two enhancements are clearly visible in the cross section around 4.23 and
4.40~GeV.
Using several models to describe the dressed cross section yields stable
parameters for the first enhancement, which has a mass of 4228.6 \pm 4.1 \pm
6.3 \un{MeV}/c^2 and a width of 77.0 \pm 6.8 \pm 6.3 \un{MeV}, where the
first uncertainties are statistical and the second ones are systematic.
Our resonant mass is consistent with previous observations of the
state and the theoretical prediction of a molecule.
This result is the first observation of associated with an
open-charm final state.
Fits with three resonance functions with additional , ,
, , or a new resonance, do not show significant
contributions from either of these resonances. The second enhancement is not
from a single known resonance. It could contain contributions from
and other resonances, and a detailed amplitude analysis is required to better
understand this enhancement
Observation of and confirmation of its large branching fraction
The baryonic decay is observed, and the
corresponding branching fraction is measured to be
, where the first uncertainty is statistical
and second systematic. The data sample used in this analysis was collected with
the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII double-ring collider with
a center-of-mass energy of 4.178~GeV and an integrated luminosity of
3.19~fb. The result confirms the previous measurement by the CLEO
Collaboration and is of greatly improved precision, which may deepen our
understanding of the dynamical enhancement of the W-annihilation topology in
the charmed meson decays
