    Stability of 1+1 dimensional causal relativistic viscous hydrodynamics

    The stability of the 1+1 dimensional solution of Israel-Stewart theory is investigated. Firstly, the evolution of the temperature and the ratio of the bulk pressure over the equilibrium pressure of the background is explored. Then the stability with linear perturbations is studied by using the Lyapunov direct method. It shows that the shear viscosity may weaken the instability induced by the large peak of bulk viscosity around the phase transition temperature TcT_c.Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures, 1 table; to be published in Nuclear Physics

    Discovery of Quasi-Periodic Oscillations in the Recurrent Burst Emission from SGR 1806-20

    We present evidence for Quasi-Periodic Oscillations (QPOs) in the recurrent outburst emission from the soft gamma repeater SGR 1806-20 using NASA's Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) observations. By searching a sample of 30 bursts for timing signals at the frequencies of the QPOs discovered in the 2004 December 27 giant flare from the source, we find three QPOs at 84, 103, and 648 Hz in three different bursts. The first two QPOs lie within \sim 1σ\: \sigma from the 92 Hz QPO detected in the giant flare. The third QPO lie within \sim 9σ\: \sigma from the 625 Hz QPO also detected in the same flare. The detected QPOs are found in bursts with different durations, morphologies, and brightness, and are vindicated by Monte Carlo simulations, which set a lower limit confidence interval 4.3σ\geq 4.3 \sigma. We also find evidence for candidate QPOs at higher frequencies in other bursts with lower statistical significance. The fact that we can find evidence for QPOs in the recurrent bursts at frequencies relatively close to those found in the giant flare is intriguing and can offer insight about the origin of the oscillations. We confront our finding against the available theoretical models and discuss the connection between the QPOs we report and those detected in the giant flares.     Response of wheat to additional nitrogen fertilizer application after pig slurry on over-fertilized soils

    Pig slurry is a valuable nutrient resource but constitutes a waste disposal problem in areas of high animal density. In the semiarid area of Pla d’Urgell, in the Ebro Valley, North-East Spain, irrigated crops receive large amounts of nutrients in the form of manure and mineral fertilizers. We studied the effect of pig slurry and additional side-dress mineral fertilizers on irrigated wheat, Triticum aestivum L., on a coarse loam soil, with high soil P and K levels. Yields increased by 62.3% when using pig slurry. The application of ammonium sulfate nitrate sidedress did not significantly increase wheat production. The average apparent recoveries were higher for potassium (88.7%) than for nitrogen (51.3%) and phosphorus (36.3%). Greater amounts of soil NO3-N were measured over the four growing seasons, which was consistent with the amount of N applied. Macronutrient and micronutrient uptake was significant higher for pig slurry treatments, but only small differences were found between the pig slurry and pig slurry plus ammonium sulfate nitrate treatments. The unfertilized treatment showed significantly lower soil P, K, Cu and Zn content than pig slurry treatments; 34%, 21%, 34%, and 26% respectively. These findings could be used to develop a nutrient management plan based on knowledge of soil test results and crop nutrient removal. This could help to improve the use of pig slurry and mineral fertilizers on limited available land areas and prevent the accumulation of potentially toxic elements in soils and the export of nutrients through agricultural drainage

    The title compound 2 was prepared and its crystal structure was determined at 100 K. The neat solid was examined by temperature dependent 57Fe Mössbauer effect (ME) spectroscopy over the interval 92 < T < 318 K, and evidences two diamagnetic Fe(II) sites and one paramagnetic Fe(III) site. The latter shows spin–lattice relaxation, but there is no evidence of electron delocalization among the three iron sites in the above temperature interval. The mean-square-amplitude-of-vibration of the diamagnetic iron site has been determined from the recoil-free fraction ME resonance, and compared to the neutral Fc3COH homologue (1). The ME dynamical data are in good agreement with the Ui,j value at 100 K extracted from the crystallographic results. The ME parameters at 5 K have also been determined with the sample compound embedded in a paraffin wax matrix as well as pelletized with BN

    Dark Energy Perturbations Revisited

    In this paper we study the evolution of cosmological perturbations in the presence of dynamical dark energy, and revisit the issue of dark energy perturbations. For a generally parameterized equation of state (EoS) such as w_D(z) = w_0+w_1\frac{z}{1+z}, (for a single fluid or a single scalar field ) the dark energy perturbation diverges when its EoS crosses the cosmological constant boundary w_D=-1. In this paper we present a method of treating the dark energy perturbations during the crossing of the wD=1w_D=-1 surface by imposing matching conditions which require the induced 3-metric on the hypersurface of w_D=-1 and its extrinsic curvature to be continuous. These matching conditions have been used widely in the literature to study perturbations in various models of early universe physics, such as Inflation, the Pre-Big-Bang and Ekpyrotic scenarios, and bouncing cosmologies. In all of these cases the EoS undergoes a sudden change. Through a detailed analysis of the matching conditions, we show that \delta_D and \theta_D are continuous on the matching hypersurface. This justifies the method used[1-4] in the numerical calculation and data fitting for the determination of cosmological parameters. Los textos aquí reunidos comparten una preocupación común: interrogarse por el Ser de la política y la manera que ésta, y sus expresiones contemporáneas, nos arrojan a habitar un mundo lleno de contradicciones y retos. La forma como vivimos el tiempo, como enfrentamos la globalización, la manera como territorializamos el espacio, como creamos alternativas frente a las lógicas dominantes, como nos insertamos o intentamos frenar la aceleración de lo cotidiano, como reconstruimos nuestras prácticas e ideas sobre la libertad, incluso, el modo de edificar nuestro estar en común, son cuestiones en las que lo político y el mundo contemporáneo terminan repensando muchos de los temas y conceptos ontológicos clásicos.     New Limits on the Ultra-high Energy Cosmic Neutrino Flux from the ANITA Experiment

    We report initial results of the first flight of the Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA-1) 2006-2007 Long Duration Balloon flight, which searched for evidence of a diffuse flux of cosmic neutrinos above energies of 3 EeV. ANITA-1 flew for 35 days looking for radio impulses due to the Askaryan effect in neutrino-induced electromagnetic showers within the Antarctic ice sheets. We report here on our initial analysis, which was performed as a blind search of the data. No neutrino candidates are seen, with no detected physics background. We set model-independent limits based on this result. Upper limits derived from our analysis rule out the highest cosmogenic neutrino models. In a background horizontal-polarization channel, we also detect six events consistent with radio impulses from ultra-high energy extensive air showers.Comment: 4 pages, 2 table

    1+3 Covariant Cosmic Microwave Background anisotropies II: The almost - Friedmann Lemaitre model

    This is the second of a series of papers extending the 1+3 covariant and gauge invariant treatment of kinetic theory to an examination of Cosmic Microwave Background temperature anisotropies arising from inhomogeneities in the early universe. The first paper dealt with algebraic issues. Here we derive the mode form of the integrated Boltzmann equations, first, giving a covariant version of the standard derivation using the mode recursion relations, second, demonstrating the link to the multipole divergence equations and finally various analytic ways of solving the resulting equations are discussed. A general integral form of solution is obtained for the equations with Thomson scattering. The covariant Friedmann-Lemaitre multipole form of the transport equations are found using the covariant and gauge-invariant generalization of the Peebles and Yu expansion in Thompson scattering time. The dispersion relations and damping scale are then obtained from the covariant approach. The equations are integrated to give the covariant and gauge-invariant equivalent of the canonical scalar sourced anisotropies. We carry out a simple treatment of the matter dominated free-streaming projection, slow decoupling, and tight-coupling cases, with the aim both giving a unified transparent derivation of this range of results and clarifying the connection between the more usual approaches (for example that of Hu and Sugiyama) and the treatment for scalar perturbations (for example the treatment of Challinor and Lasenby).Comment: To appear in Annals of Physic

    A Self-Reference False Memory Effect in the DRM Paradigm: Evidence from Eastern and Western Samples

    It is well established that processing information in relation to oneself (i.e., selfreferencing) leads to better memory for that information than processing that same information in relation to others (i.e., other-referencing). However, it is unknown whether self-referencing also leads to more false memories than other-referencing. In the current two experiments with European and East Asian samples, we presented participants the Deese-Roediger/McDermott (DRM) lists together with their own name or other people’s name (i.e., “Trump” in Experiment 1 and “Li Ming” in Experiment 2). We found consistent results across the two experiments; that is, in the self-reference condition, participants had higher true and false memory rates compared to those in the other-reference condition. Moreover, we found that selfreferencing did not exhibit superior mnemonic advantage in terms of net accuracy compared to other-referencing and neutral conditions. These findings are discussed in terms of theoretical frameworks such as spreading activation theories and the fuzzytrace theory. We propose that our results reflect the adaptive nature of memory in the sense that cognitive processes that increase mnemonic efficiency may also increase susceptibility to associative false memories

    Epstein-Barr virus transcription factor Zta acts through distal regulatory elements to directly control cellular gene expression

    Lytic replication of the human gamma herpes virus Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is an essential prerequisite for the spread of the virus. Differential regulation of a limited number of cellular genes has been reported in B-cells during the viral lytic replication cycle. We asked whether a viral bZIP transcription factor, Zta (BZLF1, ZEBRA, EB1), drives some of these changes. Using genome-wide chromatin immunoprecipitation coupled to next-generation DNA sequencing (ChIP-seq) we established a map of Zta interactions across the human genome. Using sensitive transcriptome analyses we identified 2263 cellular genes whose expression is significantly changed during the EBV lytic replication cycle. Zta binds 278 of the regulated genes and the distribution of binding sites shows that Zta binds mostly to sites that are distal to transcription start sites. This differs from the prevailing view that Zta activates viral genes by binding exclusively at promoter elements. We show that a synthetic Zta binding element confers Zta regulation at a distance and that distal Zta binding sites from cellular genes can confer Zta-mediated regulation on a heterologous promoter. This leads us to propose that Zta directly reprograms the expression of cellular genes through distal elements
