Observation of Fermi-energy dependent unitary impurity resonances in a strong topological insulator Bi2Se3 with scanning tunneling spectroscopy

Scanning tunneling spectroscopic studies of Bi2Se3 epitaxial films on Si (111) substrates reveal highly localized unitary impurity resonances associated with non-magnetic quantum impurities. The strength of the resonances depends on the energy difference between the Fermi level ({E_F}) and the Dirac point ({E_D}) and diverges as {E_F} approaches {E_D}. The Dirac-cone surface state of the host recovers within ~ 2{\AA} spatial distance from impurities, suggesting robust topological protection of the surface state of topological insulators against high-density impurities that preserve time reversal symmetry.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures. Higgs-Boson Production Associated with a Single Bottom Quark in Supersymmetric QCD

Due to the enhancement of the couplings between Higgs boson and bottom quarks in the minimal sypersymmetric standard model (MSSM), the cross section of the process pp(p\bar{p}) \to h^0b(h^0\bar{b})+X at hadron colliders can be considerably enhanced. We investigated the production of Higgs boson associated with a single high-p_T bottom quark via subprocess bg(\bar{b}g) \to h^0b(h^0\bar{b}) at hadron colliders including the next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections in MSSM. We find that the NLO QCD correction in the MSSM reaches 50%-70% at the LHC and 60%-85% at the Fermilab Tevatron in our chosen parameter space.Comment: accepted by Phys. Rev.

    Persistent Spin Currents in Helimagnets

We demonstrate that weak external magnetic fields generate dissipationless spin currents in the ground state of systems with spiral magnetic order. Our conclusions are based on phenomenological considerations and on microscopic mean-field theory calculations for an illustrative toy model. We speculate on possible applications of this effect in spintronic devices.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, updated version as published, Journal referenc

Pair Production of the Lightest Chargino via Gluon-Gluon Collisions

    Get PDF
The production of the lightest chargino pair from gluon-gluon fusion is studied in the minimal supersymmetric model(MSSM) at proton-proton colliders. We find that with the chosen parameters, the production rate of the subprocess can be over 2.7 femto barn when the chargino is higgsino-like, and the corresponding total cross section in proton-proton collider can reach 56 femto barn at the LHC in the CP-conserving MSSM. It shows that this loop mediated subprocess can be competitive with the standard Drell-Yan subprocess in proton-proton colliders, especially at the LHC. Furthermore, our calculation shows it would be possible to extract information about some CP-violating phase parameters, if we collected enough chargino pair events.Comment: 39 pages, LaTex, 8 figure

Interplay of Electron-Phonon Interaction and Electron Correlation in High Temperature Superconductivity

    Get PDF
We study the electron-phonon interaction in the strongly correlated superconducting cuprates. Two types of the electron-phonon interactions are introduced in the tJt-J model; the diagonal and off-diagonal interactions which modify the formation energy of the Zhang-Rice singlet and its transfer integral, respectively. The characteristic phonon-momentum (q)(\vec q) and electron-momentum (k)(\vec k) dependence resulted from the off-diagonal coupling can explain a variety of experiments. The vertex correction for the electron-phonon interaction is formulated in the SU(2) slave-boson theory by taking into account the collective modes in the superconducting ground states. It is shown that the vertex correction enhances the attractive potential for the d-wave paring mediated by phonon with q=(π(1δ),0)\vec q=(\pi(1-\delta), 0) around δ0.3\delta \cong 0.3 which corresponds to the half-breathing mode of the oxygen motion.Comment: 14 pages, 13 figure

Electroweak Corrections to the Charged Higgs Boson Decay into Chargino and Neutralino

The electroweak corrections to the partial widths of the H+χ~i+χ~j0(i=1,j=1,2)H^+ \to \tilde{\chi}^+_i \tilde{\chi}_j^0 (i=1,j=1,2) decays including one-loop diagrams of the third generation quarks and squarks, are investigated within the Supersymmetric Standard Model. The relative corrections can reach the values about 10%, therefore they should be taken into account for the precise experimental measurement at future colliders.Comment: 21 pages, 6 eps figures, 1 Latex fil

Measurement of the polarisation of W bosons produced with large transverse momentum in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS experiment

    Get PDF
This paper describes an analysis of the angular distribution of W->enu and W->munu decays, using data from pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2010, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 35 pb^-1. Using the decay lepton transverse momentum and the missing transverse energy, the W decay angular distribution projected onto the transverse plane is obtained and analysed in terms of helicity fractions f0, fL and fR over two ranges of W transverse momentum (ptw): 35 < ptw < 50 GeV and ptw > 50 GeV. Good agreement is found with theoretical predictions. For ptw > 50 GeV, the values of f0 and fL-fR, averaged over charge and lepton flavour, are measured to be : f0 = 0.127 +/- 0.030 +/- 0.108 and fL-fR = 0.252 +/- 0.017 +/- 0.030, where the first uncertainties are statistical, and the second include all systematic effects.Comment: 19 pages plus author list (34 pages total), 9 figures, 11 tables, revised author list, matches European Journal of Physics C versio

Observation of a new chi_b state in radiative transitions to Upsilon(1S) and Upsilon(2S) at ATLAS

    Get PDF
The chi_b(nP) quarkonium states are produced in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV and recorded by the ATLAS detector. Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.4 fb^-1, these states are reconstructed through their radiative decays to Upsilon(1S,2S) with Upsilon->mu+mu-. In addition to the mass peaks corresponding to the decay modes chi_b(1P,2P)->Upsilon(1S)gamma, a new structure centered at a mass of 10.530+/-0.005 (stat.)+/-0.009 (syst.) GeV is also observed, in both the Upsilon(1S)gamma and Upsilon(2S)gamma decay modes. This is interpreted as the chi_b(3P) system.Comment: 5 pages plus author list (18 pages total), 2 figures, 1 table, corrected author list, matches final version in Physical Review Letter

Search for displaced vertices arising from decays of new heavy particles in 7 TeV pp collisions at ATLAS

    Get PDF
We present the results of a search for new, heavy particles that decay at a significant distance from their production point into a final state containing charged hadrons in association with a high-momentum muon. The search is conducted in a pp-collision data sample with a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV and an integrated luminosity of 33 pb^-1 collected in 2010 by the ATLAS detector operating at the Large Hadron Collider. Production of such particles is expected in various scenarios of physics beyond the standard model. We observe no signal and place limits on the production cross-section of supersymmetric particles in an R-parity-violating scenario as a function of the neutralino lifetime. Limits are presented for different squark and neutralino masses, enabling extension of the limits to a variety of other models.Comment: 8 pages plus author list (20 pages total), 8 figures, 1 table, final version to appear in Physics Letters
