An on-line training radial basis function neural network for optimum operation of the UPFC
The concept of Flexible A.C. Transmission Systems (FACTS) technology was developed to enhance the performance of electric power networks (both in steady-state and transient-state) and to make better utilization of existing power transmission facilities. The continuous improvement in power ratings and switching performance of power electronic devices together with advances in circuit design and control techniques are making this concept and devices employed in FACTS more commercially attractive. The Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) is one of the main FACTS devices that have a wide implication on the power transmission systems and distribution. The purpose of this paper is to explore the use of Radial Basis Function Neural Network (RBFNN) to control the operation of the UPFC in order to improve its dynamic performance. The performance of the proposed controller compares favourably with the conventional PI and the off-line trained controller. The simple structure of the proposed controller reduces the computational requirements and emphasizes its appropriateness for on-line operation. Real-time implementation of the controller is achieved through using dSPACE ds1103 control and data acquisition board. Simulation and experimental results are presented to demonstrate the robustness of the proposed controller against changes in the transmission system operating conditions
Efficacy of albendazole against the whipworm Trichuris trichiura - a randomised, controlled trial
Objectives and design. To test the efficacy of albendazole against the whipworm Trichuris trichiura for school-based deworming in the south-western Cape, South Africa. Children infected with Trichuris were randomised to 3 doses of albendazole (400; 800 or 1 200 mg), each repeated 4 times. The boy I girl ratio was 1. A group not infected With worms was treated with placebo, creating a negative control. Subjects and setting. Pupils at a primary school serving a wineproducing area approximately 90 km east of Cape Town.Outcome measures. Trichuris cure rates and reduction in the number of eggs/gin faeces, as well as the infection dynamics of Trichuris and Ascaris during treatment with placebo.Results. Albendazole treatment was associated with Trichuris cure rates of 23% (400 mg), 56% (800 mg) and 67% (1 200 mg) after the final treatment. The corresponding reductions in the number of eggs/g of faeces were 96.8%, 99.3% and 99.7%. Environmental pollution by human faeces was confirmed because worm egg-negative children in the placebo group became egg-positive while the study was in progress.Conclusion. The 400 mg stat dose had a low Trichuris cure rate. To repeat the dose on 2 or 3 days would increase cost, reduce compliance and complicate management. Albendazole cannot be used in deworming programmes in South Africa because it is a Schedule 4 prescription medicine. De-scheduling is needed urgently, particularly because of high efficacy against hookworm in KwaZulu-Natal and neighbouring countries
Virtual Sensor Based on a Deep Learning Approach for Estimating Efficiency in Chillers
P. 307-319Intensive use of heating, ventilation and air conditioning
(HVAC) systems in buildings entails an analysis and monitoring of their
e ciency. Cooling systems are key facilities in large buildings, and par-
ticularly critical in hospitals, where chilled water production is needed
as an auxiliary resource for a large number of devices. A chiller plant
is often composed of several HVAC units running at the same time, be-
ing impossible to assess the individual cooling production and e ciency,
since a sensor is seldom installed due to the high cost. We propose a
virtual sensor that provides an estimation of the cooling production,
based on a deep learning architecture that features a 2D CNN (Convolu-
tional Neural Network) to capture relevant features on two-way matrix
arrangements of chiller data involving thermodynamic variables and the
refrigeration circuits of the chiller unit. Our approach has been tested
on an air-cooled chiller in the chiller plant at a hospital, and compared
to other state-of-the-art methods using 10-fold cross-validation. Our re-
sults report the lowest errors among the tested methods and include a
comparison of the true and estimated cooling production and e ciency
for a period of several daysS
Steam generation in a nanoparticle-based solar receiver
Steam production is essential for a wide range of applications, and currently there is still strong debate if steam could be generated on top of heated nanoparticles in a solar receiver. We performed steam generation experiments for different concentrations of gold nanoparticles dispersions in a cylindrical receiver under focused natural sunlight of 220 Suns. Combined with mathematical modelling, it is found that steam generation is mainly caused by localized boiling and vaporization in the superheated region due to highly non-uniform temperature and radiation energy distribution, albeit the bulk fluid is still subcooled. Such a phenomenon can be well explained by the classical heat transfer theory, and the hypothesized ‘nanobubble’, i.e., steam produced around the heated nanoparticles, is unlikely to occur under normal solar concentrations. In the future solar receiver design, more solar energy should be focused and trapped at the superheated region while minimizing the temperature rise of the bulk fluid

Analysis of transition state mimicry by tight binding aminothiazoline inhibitors provides insight into catalysis by human : O-GlcNAcase
The modification of nucleocytoplasmic proteins with O-linked N-Acetylglucosamine (O-GlcNAc) plays diverse roles in multicellular organisms. Inhibitors of O-GlcNAc hydrolase (OGA), the enzyme that removes O-GlcNAc from proteins, lead to increased O-GlcNAc levels in cells and are seeing widespread adoption in the field as a research tool used in cells and in vivo. Here we synthesize and study a series of tight binding carbohydrate-based inhibitors of human OGA (hOGA). The most potent of these 2′-Aminothiazolines binds with a sub-nanomolar Ki value to hOGA (510 ± 50 pM) and the most selective has greater than 1800000-fold selectivity for hOGA over mechanistically related human lysosomal β-hexosaminidase. Structural data of inhibitors in complex with an hOGA homologue reveals the basis for variation in binding among these compounds. Using linear free energy analyses, we show binding of these 2′-Aminothiazoline inhibitors depends on the pKa of the aminothiazoline ring system, revealing the protonation state of the inhibitor is a key driver of binding. Using series of inhibitors and synthetic substrates, we show that 2′-Aminothiazoline inhibitors are transition state analogues of hOGA that bind to the enzyme up to 1-million fold more tightly than the substrate. These collective data support an oxazoline, rather than a protonated oxazolinium ion, intermediate being formed along the reaction pathway. Inhibitors from this series will prove generally useful tools for the study of O-GlcNAc. The new insights gained here, into the catalytic mechanism of hOGA and the fundamental drivers of potency and selectivity of OGA inhibitors, should enable tuning of hOGA inhibitors with desirable properties
Knowledge of HIV status prior to a community HIV counseling and testing intervention in a rural district of south Africa: results of a community based survey
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The low uptake of facility-based HIV counseling and testing (HCT) in South Africa, particularly amongst men and youth has hindered attempts to increase access to effective treatment and prevention strategies. Many barriers to HIV testing have been described including long waiting times, transport to reach facilities, fear of lack of confidentiality and health systems factors such as stock outs of HIV test kits. The aim of this study was to undertake a community survey to determine rates of HCT in a rural area in order to plan a community intervention.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A community-based survey was undertaken in 16 communities in Sisonke district, KwaZulu-Natal between September and November 2008. A total of 5821 individuals participated in the survey of which 66% were females. Gender specific mixed effects logistic regression models were used to describe differences in socio-economic characteristics, and their association with HIV testing histories.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Overall 1833 (32%) individuals in this rural area knew their HIV status. Prior testing was higher amongst women (39%) than amongst men (17%). Older men (> 24 years) were more likely to report having tested for HIV previously, with the highest likelihood (adjusted OR = 4.02; 95% CI: 2.71-5.99) among men in age group, 35-49 years. For women, age group 25-34 years had the highest likelihood of having been previously tested (adjusted OR = 1.30; 95% CI: 1.05-1.66). Being currently pregnant (adjusted OR 3.31; 95% CI: 2.29 - 4.78) or having a child under five (adjusted OR 7.00; 95% CI: 5.84 - 8.39) were also associated with prior HIV testing amongst women.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Overall, knowledge of HIV status in this rural sub-district is low. The relatively higher uptake of HIV testing among women is encouraging as it shows that PMTCT services are well functioning. However, these data suggest that there is an urgent need for scaling up HIV testing services in rural communities specifically targeting men and youth.</p
Genomic Instability Is Associated with Natural Life Span Variation in Saccharomyces cerevisiae
Increasing genomic instability is associated with aging in eukaryotes, but the connection between genomic instability and natural variation in life span is unknown. We have quantified chronological life span and loss-of-heterozygosity (LOH) in 11 natural isolates of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. We show that genomic instability increases and mitotic asymmetry breaks down during chronological aging. The age-dependent increase of genomic instability generally lags behind the drop of viability and this delay accounts for ∼50% of the observed natural variation of replicative life span in these yeast isolates. We conclude that the abilities of yeast strains to tolerate genomic instability co-vary with their replicative life spans. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first quantitative evidence that demonstrates a link between genomic instability and natural variation in life span
Latent variables and route choice behavior
In the last decade, a broad array of disciplines has shown a general interest in enhancing discrete choice models by considering the incorporation of psychological factors affecting decision making. This paper provides insight into the comprehension of the determinants of route choice behavior by proposing and estimating a hybrid model that integrates latent variable and route choice models. Data contain information about latent variable indicators and chosen routes of travelers driving regularly from home to work in an urban network. Choice sets include alternative routes generated with a branch and bound algorithm. A hybrid model consists of measurement equations, which relate latent variables to measurement indicators and utilities to choice indicators, and structural equations, which link travelers' observable characteristics to latent variables and explanatory variables to utilities. Estimation results illustrate that considering latent variables (i.e., memory, habit, familiarity, spatial ability, time saving skills) alongside traditional variables (e.g., travel time, distance, congestion level) enriches the comprehension of route choice behavior
