Lack of association between genetic polymorphisms in IGF1 and IGFBP3 with twin births in a Brazilian population (Cândido Godói, Rio Grande do Sul)

Insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1) is an important peptide hormone involved in the reproduction and fetal development of mammals, and it is suggested that it may influence the human twinning rate. This study aimed to test such possible association, investigating the genetic polymorphisms IGF1 (CA)n and IGFBP3 rs2854744 in the population from Candido Godoi (CG), a small city located in the South of Brazil that has a high prevalence of twin births. A case-control study was performed comprising a total of 39 cases (representing about 40% of the mothers of twins who were born in CG after 1995) and 214 controls (mothers of non-twin children), 97 of whom were living in CG while 117 were living in Porto Alegre. DNA was extracted from blood leucocytes and genotyping was performed. According to the statistical analyses, there was no significant difference in the frequencies of both studied genetic polymorphisms when comparing case group with control group. Thus, our results pointed to a lack of association between IGF1 (CA)n and IGFBP3 rs2854744 polymorphisms and twin births in CG, but further investigations in other populations with different characteristics must be performed to confirm the role of IGF-I in human twinning

Abrindo as fronteiras da universidade através da educação sexual nas escolas: Relato de Experiência

O objetivo do relato é descrever a vivência de discentes pertencentes a uma Liga Acadêmica da Universidade Federal do Recôncavo da Bahia (UFRB), em uma atividade de extensão intitulada "Educação Sexual nas Escolas - Mitos e Verdades". Trata-se de uma atividade extensionista desenvolvida em escolas da rede pública e privada do município de Santo Antônio de Jesus - Ba, nos anos de 2018 e 2019, com público de jovens entre 13 e 15 anos. Foi desenvolvido um formulário com assertivas verdadeiras e falsas acerca da temática, para que os adolescentes  pudessem assinalar o que consideravam como sendo mito ou verdade. O formulário foi a ferramenta base que estruturou toda a discussão, sendo utilizado no início da oficina. A partir das respostas obtidas iniciou-se as discussões acerca de cada assertiva, com explicações sobre os mitos e verdades, podendo abordar a temática de forma ampla, acessível e participativa. Os resultados revelam como os serviços universitários extensionistas se apresentam como uma atividade exitosa na educação em saúde, especificamente no conhecimento e garantia dos direitos sexuais e reprodutivos

Sementes de Lágrima-de-Nossa-Senhora submetidas a diferentes tratamentos para superação de dormência / Tear-of-Our-Lady seeds submitted to different treatments to overcome dormancy

As informações disponíveis sobre as condições que favorecem o desempenho germinativo das sementes de Lágrima-de-Nossa-Senhora ainda são insuficientes. Assim, o objetivo foi avaliar a germinação de sementes de Coix lacryma-jobi sob diferentes tratamentos para a superação da dormência. Para isso, o trabalho foi dividido em três Ensaios. O Primeiro Ensaio, com os seguintes tratamentos: (i). imersão em solução com 300ml de ácido sulfúrico durante 25 minutos; (ii). imersão em água fervente por 10 minutos; (iii). excesso de água (50 ml, uma vez por semana) e; (iv). tratamento controle (água suficiente para umedecer as sementes e o papel). O Segundo Ensaio com os seguintes tratamentos: (i). controle (fornecimento normal de água); (ii). baixas temperaturas (sementes na geladeira durante uma semana); (iii). imersão em água por 12 horas; (iv); lixa + embebição; (v). embebição + lixamento; (vi). corte na horizontal com tesoura de poda + embebição; (vii). embebição + corte na horizontal com tesoura de poda.  O Terceiro Ensaio, com diferentes concentrações de ácido giberélico (GA): (i). 0 mg de GA (somente imersão água); (ii). 10 mg de GA; (iii). 20 mg de GA; e (iv) 50 mg GA, diluído em 500 ml de água destilada. Para o Primeiro Ensaio, a melhor porcentagem foi no controle e no Segundo Ensaio foi lixamento + embebição apresentou melhor resposta, seguido do corte + embebição; e embebição + lixamento. A aplicação do ácido giberélico foi mais eficaz na concentração de 50 mg. Dos três Ensaios, o melhor foi com aplicação de ácido giberélico. Dessa forma, mais estudos devem ser realizados para verificar outras formas de superação da dormência dessa semente

Optimasi Portofolio Resiko Menggunakan Model Markowitz MVO Dikaitkan dengan Keterbatasan Manusia dalam Memprediksi Masa Depan dalam Perspektif Al-Qur`an

Risk portfolio on modern finance has become increasingly technical, requiring the use of sophisticated mathematical tools in both research and practice. Since companies cannot insure themselves completely against risk, as human incompetence in predicting the future precisely that written in Al-Quran surah Luqman verse 34, they have to manage it to yield an optimal portfolio. The objective here is to minimize the variance among all portfolios, or alternatively, to maximize expected return among all portfolios that has at least a certain expected return. Furthermore, this study focuses on optimizing risk portfolio so called Markowitz MVO (Mean-Variance Optimization). Some theoretical frameworks for analysis are arithmetic mean, geometric mean, variance, covariance, linear programming, and quadratic programming. Moreover, finding a minimum variance portfolio produces a convex quadratic programming, that is minimizing the objective function ðð¥with constraintsð ð 𥠥 ðandð´ð¥ = ð. The outcome of this research is the solution of optimal risk portofolio in some investments that could be finished smoothly using MATLAB R2007b software together with its graphic analysis

Differential cross section measurements for the production of a W boson in association with jets in proton–proton collisions at √s = 7 TeV

Measurements are reported of differential cross sections for the production of a W boson, which decays into a muon and a neutrino, in association with jets, as a function of several variables, including the transverse momenta (pT) and pseudorapidities of the four leading jets, the scalar sum of jet transverse momenta (HT), and the difference in azimuthal angle between the directions of each jet and the muon. The data sample of pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV was collected with the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb[superscript −1]. The measured cross sections are compared to predictions from Monte Carlo generators, MadGraph + pythia and sherpa, and to next-to-leading-order calculations from BlackHat + sherpa. The differential cross sections are found to be in agreement with the predictions, apart from the pT distributions of the leading jets at high pT values, the distributions of the HT at high-HT and low jet multiplicity, and the distribution of the difference in azimuthal angle between the leading jet and the muon at low values.United States.
