A nonsynonymous SNP within PCDH15 is associated with lipid traits in familial combined hyperlipidemia
Familial combined hyperlipidemia (FCHL) is a common lipid disorder characterized by the presence of multiple lipoprotein phenotypes that increase the risk of premature coronary heart disease. In a previous study, we identified an intragenic microsatellite marker within the protocadherin 15 (PCDH15) gene to be associated with high triglycerides (TGs) in Finnish dyslipidemic families. In this study we analyzed all four known nonsynonymous SNPs within PCDH15 in 1,268 individuals from Finnish and Dutch multigenerational families with FCHL. Association analyses of quantitative traits for SNPs were performed using the QTDT test. The nonsynonymous SNP rs10825269 resulted in a PÂ =Â 0.0006 for the quantitative TG trait. Additional evidence for association was observed with the same SNP for apolipoprotein B levels (apo-B) (PÂ =Â 0.0001) and total cholesterol (TC) levels (PÂ =Â 0.001). None of the other three SNPs tested showed a significant association with any lipid-related trait. We investigated the expression of PCDH15 in different human tissues and observed that PCDH15 is expressed in several tissues including liver and pancreas. In addition, we measured the plasma lipid levels in mice with loss-of-function mutations in Pcdh15 (Pcdh15av-Tg and Pcdh15av-3J) to investigate possible abnormalities in their lipid profile. We observed a significant difference in plasma TG and TC concentrations for the Pcdh15av-3J carriers when compared with the wild type (PÂ =Â 0.013 and PÂ =Â 0.044, respectively). Relationship between Reproductive Allocation and Relative Abundance among 32 Species of a Tibetan Alpine Meadow: Effects of Fertilization and Grazing
Background: Understanding the relationship between species traits and species abundance is an important goal in ecology and biodiversity science. Although theoretical studies predict that traits related to performance (e.g. reproductive allocation) are most directly linked to species abundance within a community, empirical investigations have rarely been done. It also remains unclear how environmental factors such as grazing or fertilizer application affect the predicted relationship.
Methodology: We conducted a 3-year field experiment in a Tibetan alpine meadow to assess the relationship between plant reproductive allocation (RA) and species relative abundance (SRA) on control, grazed and fertilized plots. Overall, the studied plant community contained 32 common species.
Principal Findings: At the treatment level, (i) RA was negatively correlated with SRA on control plots and during the first year on fertilized plots. (ii) No negative RAâSRA correlations were observed on grazed plots and during the second and third year on fertilized plots. (iii) Seed size was positively correlated with SRA on control plots. At the plot level, the correlation between SRA and RA were not affected by treatment, year or species composition.
Conclusions/Significance: Our study shows that the performance-related trait RA can negatively affect SRA within communities, which is possibly due to the tradeoffs between clonal growth (for space occupancy) and sexual reproduction. We propose that if different species occupy different positions along these tradeoffs it will contribute to biodiversity maintenance in local communities or even at lager scale
Production of phi mesons at mid-rapidity in sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC
We present the first results of meson production in the K^+K^- decay channel
from Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV as measured at mid-rapidity by
the PHENIX detector at RHIC. Precision resonance centroid and width values are
extracted as a function of collision centrality. No significant variation from
the PDG accepted values is observed. The transverse mass spectra are fitted
with a linear exponential function for which the derived inverse slope
parameter is seen to be constant as a function of centrality. These data are
also fitted by a hydrodynamic model with the result that the freeze-out
temperature and the expansion velocity values are consistent with the values
previously derived from fitting single hadron inclusive data. As a function of
transverse momentum the collisions scaled peripheral.to.central yield ratio RCP
for the is comparable to that of pions rather than that of protons. This result
lends support to theoretical models which distinguish between baryons and

Two distinct catalytic pathways for GH43 xylanolytic enzymes unveiled by X-ray and QM/MM simulations
Xylanolytic enzymes from glycoside hydrolase family 43 (GH43) are involved in the breakdown of hemicellulose, the second most abundant carbohydrate in plants. Here, we kinetically and mechanistically describe the non-reducing-end xylose-releasing exo-oligoxylanase activity and report the crystal structure of a native GH43 Michaelis complex with its substrate prior to hydrolysis. Two distinct calcium-stabilized conformations of the active site xylosyl unit are found, suggesting two alternative catalytic routes. These results are confirmed by QM/MM simulations that unveil the complete hydrolysis mechanism and identify two possible reaction pathways, involving different transition state conformations for the cleavage of xylooligosaccharides. Such catalytic conformational promiscuity in glycosidases is related to the open architecture of the active site and thus might be extended to other exo-acting enzymes. These findings expand the current general model of catalytic mechanism of glycosidases, a main reaction in nature, and impact on our understanding about their interaction with substrates and inhibitors
J/psi production from proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV
J/psi production has been measured in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s)=
200 GeV over a wide rapidity and transverse momentum range by the PHENIX
experiment at RHIC. Distributions of the rapidity and transverse momentum,
along with measurements of the mean transverse momentum and total production
cross section are presented and compared to available theoretical calculations.
The total J/psi cross section is 3.99 +/- 0.61(stat) +/- 0.58(sys) +/-
0.40(abs) micro barns. The mean transverse momentum is 1.80 +/- 0.23(stat) +/-

Measurement of Single Electron Event Anisotropy in Au+Au Collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV
The transverse momentum dependence of the azimuthal anisotropy parameter v_2,
the second harmonic of the azimuthal distribution, for electrons at
mid-rapidity (|eta| < 0.35) has been measured with the PHENIX detector in Au+Au
collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV. The measurement was made with respect to
the reaction plane defined at high rapidities (|eta| = 3.1 -- 3.9). From the
result we have measured the v_2 of electrons from heavy flavor decay after
subtraction of the v_2 of electrons from other sources such as photon
conversions and Dalitz decay from light neutral mesons. We observe a non-zero

Systematic Studies of the Centrality and sqrt(s_NN) Dependence of dE_T/deta and dN_ch/deta in Heavy Ion Collisions at Mid-rapidity
The PHENIX experiment at RHIC has measured transverse energy and charged
particle multiplicity at mid-rapidity in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 19.6,
130 and 200 GeV as a function of centrality. The presented results are compared
to measurements from other RHIC experiments, and experiments at lower energies.
The sqrt(s_NN) dependence of dE_T/deta and dN_ch/deta per pair of participants
is consistent with logarithmic scaling for the most central events. The
centrality dependence of dE_T/deta and dN_ch/deta is similar at all measured
incident energies. At RHIC energies the ratio of transverse energy per charged
particle was found independent of centrality and growing slowly with
sqrt(s_NN). A survey of comparisons between the data and available theoretical

Centrality Dependence of Charm Production from Single Electrons in Au+Au Collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV
The PHENIX experiment has measured mid-rapidity transverse momentum spectra
(0.4 < p_T < 4.0 GeV/c) of single electrons as a function of centrality in
Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV. Contributions to the raw spectra from
photon conversions and Dalitz decays of light neutral mesons are measured by
introducing a thin (1.7% X_0) converter into the PHENIX acceptance and are
statistically removed. The subtracted ``non-photonic'' electron spectra are
primarily due to the semi-leptonic decays of hadrons containing heavy quarks
(charm and bottom). For all centralities, charm production is found to scale
with the nuclear overlap function, T_AA. For minimum-bias collisions the charm
cross section per binary collision is N_cc^bar/T_AA = 622 +/- 57 (stat.) +/-

Search for jet extinction in the inclusive jet-pT spectrum from proton-proton collisions at s=8 TeV

Further distribution of this work must maintain attribution to the author(s) and the published articles title, journal citation, and DOI.The first search at the LHC for the extinction of QCD jet production is presented, using data collected with the CMS detector corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 10.7ââfbâ1 of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. The extinction model studied in this analysis is motivated by the search for signatures of strong gravity at the TeV scale (terascale gravity) and assumes the existence of string couplings in the strong-coupling limit. In this limit, the string model predicts the suppression of all high-transverse-momentum standard model processes, including jet production, beyond a certain energy scale. To test this prediction, the measured transverse-momentum spectrum is compared to the theoretical prediction of the standard model. No significant deficit of events is found at high transverse momentum. A 95% confidence level lower limit of 3.3 TeV is set on the extinction mass scale
