Flux profile scanners for scattered high-energy electrons
The paper describes the design and performance of flux integrating Cherenkov
scanners with air-core reflecting light guides used in a high-energy, high-flux
electron scattering experiment at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The
scanners were highly radiation resistant and provided a good signal to
background ratio leading to very good spatial resolution of the scattered

Probing CP Violation with the Deuteron Electric Dipole Moment
We present an analysis of the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the deuteron as
induced by CP-violating operators of dimension 4, 5 and 6 including theta QCD,
the EDMs and color EDMs of quarks, four-quark interactions and the Weinberg
operator. We demonstrate that the precision goal of the EDM Collaboration's
proposal to search for the deuteron EDM, (1-3)\times 10^{-27} e cm, will
provide an improvement in sensitivity to these sources of one-two orders of
magnitude relative to the existing bounds. We consider in detail the level to

CP violation in in the model III 2HDM
We have calculated the Wilson coefficients (i=1,2) in the
renormalization scheme in the model III 2HDM. Using the obtained
Wilson coefficients, we have analyzed the CP violation in decays (q=d,s) in the model. The CP asymmetry, , depends on the
parameters of models and in can be as large as 40% and
35% for and respectively. It can reach 4% for decays.
Because in SM CP violation is smaller than or equal to O() which is
unobservably small, an observation of CP asymmetry in the decays would unambiguously signal the existence of new physics.Comment: revtex4, 16 pages, 7 figure
Proteogenomic analysis of human colon cancer reveals new therapeutic opportunities
We performed the first proteogenomic study on a prospectively collected colon cancer cohort. Comparative proteomic and phosphoproteomic analysis of paired tumor and normal adjacent tissues produced a catalog of colon cancer-associated proteins and phosphosites, including known and putative new biomarkers, drug targets, and cancer/testis antigens. Proteogenomic integration not only prioritized genomically inferred targets, such as copy-number drivers and mutation-derived neoantigens, but also yielded novel findings. Phosphoproteomics data associated Rb phosphorylation with increased proliferation and decreased apoptosis in colon cancer, which explains why this classical tumor suppressor is amplified in colon tumors and suggests a rationale for targeting Rb phosphorylation in colon cancer. Proteomics identified an association between decreased CD8 T cell infiltration and increased glycolysis in microsatellite instability-high (MSI-H) tumors, suggesting glycolysis as a potential target to overcome the resistance of MSI-H tumors to immune checkpoint blockade. Detector Description and Performance for the First Coincidence Observations between LIGO and GEO
For 17 days in August and September 2002, the LIGO and GEO interferometer
gravitational wave detectors were operated in coincidence to produce their
first data for scientific analysis. Although the detectors were still far from
their design sensitivity levels, the data can be used to place better upper
limits on the flux of gravitational waves incident on the earth than previous
direct measurements. This paper describes the instruments and the data in some

A First Search for coincident Gravitational Waves and High Energy Neutrinos using LIGO, Virgo and ANTARES data from 2007
We present the results of the first search for gravitational wave bursts
associated with high energy neutrinos. Together, these messengers could reveal
new, hidden sources that are not observed by conventional photon astronomy,
particularly at high energy. Our search uses neutrinos detected by the
underwater neutrino telescope ANTARES in its 5 line configuration during the
period January - September 2007, which coincided with the fifth and first
science runs of LIGO and Virgo, respectively. The LIGO-Virgo data were analysed
for candidate gravitational-wave signals coincident in time and direction with
the neutrino events. No significant coincident events were observed. We place
limits on the density of joint high energy neutrino - gravitational wave
emission events in the local universe, and compare them with densities of

Dynamical Left-Right Symmetry Breaking
We study a left--right symmetric model which contains only elementary gauge
boson and fermion fields and no scalars. The phenomenologically required
symmetry breaking emerges dynamically leading to a composite Higgs sector with
a renormalizable effective Lagrangian. We discuss the pattern of symmetry
breaking and phenomenological consequences of this scenario. It is shown that a
viable top quark mass can be achieved for the ratio of the VEVs of the
bi--doublet =~ 1.3--4. For a theoretically
plausible choice of the parameters the right--handed scale can be as low as
; in this case one expects several intermediate and low--scale
scalars in addition to the \SM Higgs boson. These may lead to observable lepton
flavour violation effects including decay with the rate close

Can Current Moisture Responses Predict Soil CO2 Efflux Under Altered Precipitation Regimes? A Synthesis of Manipulation Experiments
As a key component of the carbon cycle, soil CO2 efflux (SCE) is being increasingly studied to improve our mechanistic understanding of this important carbon flux. Predicting ecosystem responses to climate change often depends on extrapolation of current relationships between ecosystem processes and their climatic drivers to conditions not yet experienced by the ecosystem. This raises the question to what extent these relationships remain unaltered beyond the current climatic window for which observations are available to constrain the relationships. Here, we evaluate whether current responses of SCE to fluctuations in soil temperature and soil water content can be used to predict SCE under altered rainfall patterns. Of the 58 experiments for which we gathered SCE data, 20 were discarded because either too few data were available, or inconsistencies precluded their incorporation in the analyses. The 38 remaining experiments were used to test the hypothesis that a model parameterized with data from the control plots (using soil temperature and water content as predictor variables) could adequately predict SCE measured in the manipulated treatment. Only for seven of these 38 experiments, this hypothesis was rejected. Importantly, these were the experiments with the most reliable datasets, i.e., those providing high-frequency measurements of SCE. Accordingly, regression tree analysis demonstrated that measurement frequency was crucial; our hypothesis could be rejected only for experiments with measurement intervals of less than 11 days, and was not rejected for any of the 24 experiments with larger measurement intervals. This highlights the importance of high-frequency measurements when studying effects of altered precipitation on SCE, probably because infrequent measurement schemes have insufficient capacity to detect shifts in the climate-dependencies of SCE. We strongly recommend that future experiments focus more strongly on establishing response functions across a broader range of precipitation regimes and soil moisture conditions. Such experiments should make accurate measurements of water availability, they require high-frequency SCE measurements and they should consider both instantaneous responses and the potential legacy effects of climate extremes. This is important, because we demonstrated that at least for some ecosystems, current moisture responses cannot be extrapolated to predict SCE under altered rainfall
