    Devotions for Lent 2023 Hymns of Lent

    This Lent, we will continue reflecting on hymns of faith, namely, some of our most beloved Lenten hymns. 10 such hymns have been chosen to fill the 40(+) days of Lent. Therefore, this devotional, different from previous editions, does not proceed on a weekly basis, but merely flows from one hymn to the next. Also different from previous editions, the devotional reflections are specifically based on the stanzas of the selected hymns. Therefore, each day’s reflection features the text of the hymn stanza, a devotion based on that stanza, a prayer, and then a Scripture passage or passages for further meditation.     Exploring Cosmic Origins with CORE: Cosmological Parameters

    We forecast the main cosmological parameter constraints achievable with theCORE space mission which is dedicated to mapping the polarisation of the CosmicMicrowave Background (CMB). CORE was recently submitted in response to ESA'sfifth call for medium-sized mission proposals (M5). Here we report the resultsfrom our pre-submission study of the impact of various instrumental options, inparticular the telescope size and sensitivity level, and review the great,transformative potential of the mission as proposed. Specifically, we assessthe impact on a broad range of fundamental parameters of our Universe as afunction of the expected CMB characteristics, with other papers in the seriesfocusing on controlling astrophysical and instrumental residual systematics. Inthis paper, we assume that only a few central CORE frequency channels areusable for our purpose, all others being devoted to the cleaning ofastrophysical contaminants. On the theoretical side, we assume LCDM as ourgeneral framework and quantify the improvement provided by CORE over thecurrent constraints from the Planck 2015 release. We also study the jointsensitivity of CORE and of future Baryon Acoustic Oscillation and Large ScaleStructure experiments like DESI and Euclid. Specific constraints on the physicsof inflation are presented in another paper of the series. In addition to thesix parameters of the base LCDM, which describe the matter content of aspatially flat universe with adiabatic and scalar primordial fluctuations frominflation, we derive the precision achievable on parameters like thosedescribing curvature, neutrino physics, extra light relics, primordial heliumabundance, dark matter annihilation, recombination physics, variation offundamental constants, dark energy, modified gravity, reionization and cosmicbirefringence.     A Frugal Approach to Reduce RCU Grace Period Overhead

    Grace period computation is a core part of the Read-Copy-Update (RCU) synchronization technique that determines the safe time to reclaim the deferred objects' memory. We first show that the eager grace period computation employed in the Linux kernel is appropriate only for enterprise workloads such as web and database servers where a large amount of reclaimable memory awaits the completion of a grace period. However, such memory is negligible in High-Performance Computing (HPC) and mostly idling environments due to limited OS kernel activity. Hence an eager approach is not only futile but also detrimental as the CPU cycles consumed to compute a grace period leads to jitter in HPC and frequent CPU wake-ups in idle environments. We design frugal grace periods, an economical grace period computation for non-enterprise environments that consume fewer CPU cycles. In addition, we reduce the number of grace periods either by using heuristics or by letting the memory allocator to explicitly request for a grace period only when it is running out of free objects. Our implementation in the Linux kernel reduces the number of grace periods by 68% to 99%, reduces the CPU time consumed by grace periods by 39% to 99%, improves the throughput by up to 28% for NAS parallel benchmarks and increases the CPU time spent in low power states by 2.4x when the system is idle

    Advanced age influences the dynamic changes in circulating C-reactive protein following injury

    Background The concentration of C-reactive protein (CRP), a biomarker of systemic inflammation, is determined by genetic, clinical and demographic factors including gender, smoking and body mass index (BMI). The influence of age on CRP dynamic changes following insult has, however, been poorly characterised. Methods We used unilateral hernia repair as a model of standardised insult to investigate the influence of baseline demographic and clinico-pathological factors affecting the dynamic changes in CRP, interleukin (IL) 6 and tumour necrosis factor-α over a time course of 48 h following injury. Results We derived CRP negativisation kinetics on 100 prospectively enrolled male subjects with mean age of 60.6 years (range 24–90 years) and mean BMI of 25.7 kg/m2 (range 17.9–37 kg/m2). Patients who failed to normalise CRP to<10 mg/l at 48 h (n=74) were significantly older (p<0.001), had longer surgical times (p=0.05), higher waist/hip ratio (p=0.02). Multiple regression analysis confirmed age as the only independent predictor of delayed CRP normalisation (p=0.03). Persistent CRP elevation was associated with higher peak CRP values (p<0.001), higher IL-6 concentrations at 24 (p=0.01) and 48 h (p=0.03). Conclusions CRP decline following insult is delayed in elderly patients as a result of unopposed IL-6 release. Age should be routinely incorporated in the assessment of CRP response to avoid misinterpretation of age-related delay in CRP clearance with ongoing systemic inflammation
