Three 4-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-2,5-dihydroxybenzaldehyde fluorophores were introduced to construct a tripodal multifunctional ESPIT fluorescence probe L. The fluorescent analysis revealed that probe L exhibited excellent recognition capabilities towards Cr3+, Al3+, Zn2+ and F− ions with large Stokes shifts. Furthermore, under optimal conditions, the detection limit of probe L towards Cr3+, Al3+, Zn2+ and F− were low, of the order of 10−8 M, which indicated that probe L was sensitive to these four ions. Interestingly, the fluorescent and 1H NMR titration experiments revealed that the recognition mechanism of probe L towards the ions Cr3+, Al3+, Zn2+ and F− were different. The presence of Cr3+ and Al3+ recovered the ESIPT, but the presence of Zn2+ trigger a moderate deprotonation of the phenolic OH and induced an ESIPT red-shifted (60 nm) emission wavelength. Finally, the presence of F− completely deprotonated the free phenolic OH and a remarkable red-shifted (130 nm) ESIPT emission was observed. In other words, the ESIPT process of probe L is controllable. Furthermore, the utility of probe L as a biosensor in living cells (PC3 cells) towards Cr3+, Al3+ and Zn2+ ions has been demonstrated

    Development and Preclinical Studies of Broad-Spectrum Anti-HIV Agent (3′ R ,4′ R )-3-Cyanomethyl-4-methyl-3′,4′-di- O -( S )-camphanoyl-(+)- cis -khellactone (3-Cyanomethyl-4-methyl-DCK)

In prior investigation, we discovered that (3'R,4'R)-3-cyanomethyl-4-methyl-3',4'-di-O-(S)-camphanoyl-(+)-cis-khellactone (4, 3-cyanomethyl-4-methyl-DCK) showed promising anti-HIV activity. In these current studies, we developed and optimized successfully a practical ten-step synthesis for scale-up preparation to increase the overall yield of 4 from 7.8% to 32%. Furthermore, compound 4 exhibited broad-spectrum anti-HIV activity against wild-type and drug-resistant viral infection of CD4+ T cell lines as well as peripheral blood mononuclear cells by both laboratory-adapted and primary HIV-1 isolates with distinct subtypes and tropisms. Compound 4 was further subjected to in vitro and in vivo pharmacokinetic studies. These studies indicated that 4 has moderate cell permeability, moderate oral bioavailability and low systemic clearance. These results suggest that 4 should be developed as a promising anti-HIV agent for development as a clinical trial candidate

BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including Hepatitis B and C virus, are emerging public health risks in China, especially among men who have sex with men (MSM). This study aims to assess the magnitude and risks of STIs among Chinese MSM. METHODS: Chinese and English peer-reviewed articles were searched in five electronic databases from January 2000 to February 2013. Pooled prevalence estimates for each STI infection were calculated using meta-analysis. Infection risks of STIs in MSM, HIV-positive MSM and male sex workers (MSW) were obtained. This review followed the PRISMA guidelines and was registered in PROSPERO. RESULTS: Eighty-eight articles (11 in English and 77 in Chinese) investigating 35,203 MSM in 28 provinces were included in this review. The prevalence levels of STIs among MSM were 6.3% (95% CI: 3.5-11.0%) for chlamydia, 1.5% (0.7-2.9%) for genital wart, 1.9% (1.3-2.7%) for gonorrhoea, 8.9% (7.8-10.2%) for hepatitis B (HBV), 1.2% (1.0-1.6%) for hepatitis C (HCV), 66.3% (57.4-74.1%) for human papillomavirus (HPV), 10.6% (6.2-17.6%) for herpes simplex virus (HSV-2) and 4.3% (3.2-5.8%) for Ureaplasma urealyticum. HIV-positive MSM have consistently higher odds of all these infections than the broader MSM population. As a subgroup of MSM, MSW were 2.5 (1.4-4.7), 5.7 (2.7-12.3), and 2.2 (1.4-3.7) times more likely to be infected with chlamydia, gonorrhoea and HCV than the broader MSM population, respectively. CONCLUSION: Prevalence levels of STIs among MSW were significantly higher than the broader MSM population. Co-infection of HIV and STIs were prevalent among Chinese MSM. Integration of HIV and STIs healthcare and surveillance systems is essential in providing effective HIV/STIs preventive measures and treatments. TRIAL REGISTRATION: PROSPERO NO: CRD42013003721

This paper presents a comprehensive study of the optical and electrical dielectric material properties of six commonly-used silicon and glass substrates at terahertz (THz) frequencies, including refractive index, absorption coefficient, dielectric constant and loss factor. The material characterization techniques used in this paper feature THz time-domain transmission and reflection spectroscopy with the measurement frequencies from 0.5 THz up to a maximum of 6.5 THz. Of the six selected dielectric and semiconductor substrates, two are silicon wafers with resistivities ranging from 0.001 to 0.02 Ω-cm. From the measurement results, loss tangents of the selected silicon wafers range from 0.680 to 5.455 and the dielectric constants are from 1.079 to 17.735. The four other wafers are all glass-based substrates: D263 glass, Borofloat 33 glass, fused silica and Sapphire. From the measurements, it is found that the THz dielectric properties vary considerably between the substrate samples e.g. dielectric constants range from 1.925 to 3.207 while loss tangents are from 0.042 × 10−3 to 0.127. Most of the selected silicon and glass-based substrates are quite useful for many THz applications, e.g., THz integrated circuits (THz ICs), THz microsystem technologies (THz MSTs) and THz system-on-a-chip (THz SoC) and system-on-substrate (SiP)

BACKGROUND: This study aims to estimate the magnitude and changing trends of HIV, syphilis and HIV-syphilis co-infections among men who have sex with men (MSM) in China during 2003-2008 through a systematic review of published literature. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Chinese and English literatures were searched for studies reporting HIV and syphilis prevalence among MSM from 2003 to 2008. The prevalence estimates were summarized and analysed by meta-analyses. Meta-regression was used to identify the potential factors that are associated with high heterogeneities in meta-analysis. Seventy-one eligible articles were selected in this review (17 in English and 54 in Chinese). Nationally, HIV prevalence among MSM increased from 1.3% during 2003-2004 to 2.4% during 2005-2006 and to 4.7% during 2007-2008. Syphilis prevalence increased from 6.8% during 2003-2004 to 10.4% during 2005-2006 and to 13.5% during 2007-2008. HIV-syphilis co-infection increased from 1.4% during 2005-2006 to 2.7% during 2007-2008. Study locations and study period are the two major contributors of heterogeneities of both HIV and syphilis prevalence among Chinese MSM. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: There have been significant increases in HIV and syphilis prevalence among MSM in China. Scale-up of HIV and syphilis screening and implementation of effective public health intervention programs should target MSM to prevent further spread of HIV and syphilis infection

Search for direct stau production in events with two hadronic tau-leptons in root s=13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

A search for the direct production of the supersymmetric partners ofτ-leptons (staus) in final stateswith two hadronically decayingτ-leptons is presented. The analysis uses a dataset of pp collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of139fb−1, recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LargeHadron Collider at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. No significant deviation from the expected StandardModel background is observed. Limits are derived in scenarios of direct production of stau pairs with eachstau decaying into the stable lightest neutralino and oneτ-lepton in simplified models where the two staumass eigenstates are degenerate. Stau masses from 120 GeV to 390 GeV are excluded at 95% confidencelevel for a massless lightest neutralino
